Graded Assignment 4: The Collaborative Project
Overview: You are part of a team of Waterloo students assigned to prepare a case study in an area of concern to a group of stakeholders. Your team will define that audience and your objectives, carry out a program of research, discuss the results of that research, offer recommendations or solutions, and perhaps implement some of those recommendations in the form of the top level of a Web site or a pamphlet. You must follow a series of steps before you can prepare the final report and present it before an audience of stakeholders, among whom are your peers, your teachers, and other interested parties from the local community. Research: The kind of research you perform depends on the nature of your case study. But you must use at least three different types of research: Library The Web Surveys (you’ll have a chance to administer these to your peers in the lecture) Interviews (you can arrange these yourself, or if the same individuals are identified by several groups, we will arrange the interview for you) Empirical (i.e., observational or experimental; for example, an analysis of a computer program)

Usually there are three types: Those that are capable of doing symbolic math are called Computer Algebra Systems, those that focuses on numerical math, and those focuses on statistics. Dr Dawson's Book Club This page contains descriptions of some of my favorite books, mostly of a mathematical nature. I've tried to stick to books that will be enjoyed by (mathematically-inclined) high school and undergraduate students, as well as older readers.
I haven't added links to Amazon or any other online bookstore. Firstly, I'd like you to consider supporting your local real-world bookstore (even if it's a chain, specially if it isn't). Secondly, the same goes for your local library. Thirdly, you could be looking at a $12 postage and handling fee and a two-week wait. Finally, if you do need to buy online (and OK, sometimes it's the only way to get something unusual) you don't really need a link, just a search engine.
  • If you haven't read Douglas Hofstadter 's book
I also recommend Hofstadter's very moving Le ton beau de Marot , in which he considers just what is meant by "translation". Both are published by Basic Books and should be available in any good library or large bookstore.
  • While it's not exactly mathematics, I can't resist recommending

http://www.trottermath.net/probsolv/levynos.html
Levy Expressions In July of 2003, WTM had the good fortune to make acquaintance with a very creative mathematician by the name of Jerry Levy. Mr. Levy was attracted by a certain problem based on a popular theme in recreational math, namely pandigitality . Now, pandigitality is a new word not likely to be in the dictionaries yet, as WTM has just invented it here for use in this webpage. At its simplest, it merely means using all the digits 1 to 9 (or in its purest form, to 9) once and only once in some unique manner. [WTM already has presented some material in this regard. See Digital Diversions and Pandigital Diversions Jerry's original interest arose from the following situation: Given the expression A/BC + D/EF + G/HI where adjoining letters, such as BC, indicate a 2-place number. Objective #1 : replace the letters with the digits 1 to 9, one digit per letter, in such a way that a integer i.e. whole number ) is the value of the expression. Objective #2 : find the replacements that result in the smallest and largest possible integer values. [Note: To learn more about this problem and see its solution, click

Penrose is a professor of mathematics at the University of Oxford in England, where he pursues an active interest in recreational math which he shared with his father. While most of his work pertains to relativity theory and quantum physics, he is fascinated with a field of geometry known as tessellation, the covering of a surface with tiles of prescribed shapes. 00: General (and Elementary) Mathematics
Introduction
The Mathematics Subject Classification uses the classification 00 principally for non-subject-specific materials, such as conference proceedings, dictionaries, handbooks, and problem books. It also includes subject-specific items not typically noted in the Mathematical Reviews database by the AMS, such as elementary mathematics, recreational mathematics, and elementary applications of mathematics. In general, such material is not included in this collection either. In many cases an occasion arises to treat an elementary question in a non-elementary way, and to so illustrate some branch of more advanced mathematics. When such an illustration is saved in this collection, it is classified according to the tool used (contrary to AMS guidelines for the use of the MSC!).
History
It seems difficult to contemplate a "history of general mathematics". One could of course consider a general history of mathematics, but such material is in 01: History and Biography See also this history of recreational mathematics
Applications and related fields
Material from the pre-college curriculum is mostly absent from this collection. Elementary geometry is usually in
