Teachers now the latest target for math tutors
August 29, 2004 SAUGUS In the sunny library of an elementary school, Janis Cataldo played with pennies and styrofoam cups, trying to unravel a math equation. Her teacher told her to pretend the cups and coins were numbers and variables, an easier way for 11- and 12-year-olds to grasp early algebra. ADVERTISEMENT But Cataldo is no middle school student. She is 57 years old, with 17 years of teaching under her belt. As children chased one another in the yard outside the library, she cracked word problems as part of a new back-to-school goal in Massachusetts: pumping up teachers' math skills. With thousands of Massachusetts students heading back to class this week and next, elementary and middle school teachers in nearly a dozen mid-sized urban and suburban school systems are learning how to teach math with more confidence. Cataldo was one of dozens of teachers enrolled in a summertime math ''boot camp" run by Lesley University and Mass Insight Education. ''I need strengthening," said Cataldo, a sixth-grade math teacher who this fall will be a math coach at two Revere public schools. ''I've been stuck in sixth-grade math. I don't remember calculus, trigonometry, high-level math. If I know the high-level math, it's easier to teach the lower-level math."

Evaluation of the Academic Resource Center General College University of Minnesota FINAL REPORT July 22, 1998 Susan Lindoo TABLE OF CONTENTS
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Academic Resource Center (ARC) is a service provided by General College to support underprepared students. It has three components: the Writing Center, Math Center, and Computer Accommodation Program. The primary services of the ARC are: tutorial assistance to students working on coursework requiring writing and math skills; computers for students' use; student study space; and a check-out service for materials that instructors put on reserve. The ARC's services were evaluated during winter and spring quarters, 1998, as part of a general policy of periodic evaluations of General College programs. The purpose was to gather information to answer the five questions listed under Results. A written survey was administered to students enrolled in General College courses, and interviews were conducted with a sample of General College instructors and academic staff. Results I. To what extent did the ARC's services support General College courses and programs?

Last updated on July 20, 2005 The Pre-GED program helps our more advanced (5th-8th grade reading level) adult literacy students build their literacy and learning skills to prepare for a GED program. The Pre-GED math tutors lead a group of 12-15 students with a co-tutor once a week in the evening. Tutors also plan appropriate learning activities and consult regularly with an Educational Center Coordinator. Required training for the tutorial program is provided by Literacy Partners. It covers strategies for teaching reading, writing and math to adult learners, and the opportunity to observe or participate in existing groups. Once training is completed (approx. 20hrs over 3-4 weeks) volunteers can tutor in any of our morning, afternoon or evening programs. Trainings are usually held 3 times a year (fall, winter, and spring). An orientation is required before being invited to training. For more information, including orientation dates, contact the volunteer manager.

    VOLUME 29, NUMBER 3 - March 1998
Math software allows students to subtract fear, multiply confidence
Psychologist builds an artificially intelligent math tutor. By Rebecca A. Clay R emember the humiliations of high school math class? If you ever had to stand at a blackboard struggling over a difficult problem in front of your peers, you probably hoped that one day someone would come up with a better way to teach math. For thousands of students making their way through the algebra-geometry sequence, that dream has become a reality. Forty-five schools are now using artificially intelligent math tutors developed by John R. Anderson, PhD, and other psychologists in the Pittsburgh Advanced Cognitive Tutor (PACT) Center at Carnegie Mellon University. Called “cognitive tutors,” the software programs are designed to think along with the students who use them. Students typically spend two days a week in computer labs, working on individual problem-solving skills as a supplement to the more traditional classroom instruction they receive the other three days of the week. The result is not only individualized instruction but an opportunity to learn without fear. “By far and away the most common comment I hear from students is, ‘Nobody knows I’ve made a mistake when I’m using the tutor,” says Anderson, the center’s co-director and the university’s Walter VanDyke Bingham professor of cognitive psychology and computer science. ”There’s a sense of not having to be embarrassed by your errors, of being free to learn.”
