June 2005 With both my kids I found individual SAT tutoring more effective and less expensive than classes, and I want to recommend an SAT tutoring service that does a great job of matching students to individual tutors. It's SuccessLink Tutoring, where Michael Weller will learn about your student and then find a tutor that matches his/her learning style and personal interests as well. You can reach him at 650-346-0410, or info@successlinktutoring.com (www.successlinktutoring.com) Beth I would like to recommend my son's SAT prep tutor to parents looking for an excellent and reliable SAT tutor. His name is Mo Rahmoun.

How to Prepare for Placement Testing
Math Reading Writing Tips for Success A placement test evaluates the knowledge and skills you already possess. This knowledge is usually acquired over a long period of time. You cannot learn it overnight or in a few weeks prior to the test. You will want the results to honestly reflect your level of knowledge and ability at the time you take the test. A good placement result will be of little comfort and no help if you do not truly have knowledge and skills needed in a course, which could result in poor performance and possible failure of the course. You may have the needed knowledge and skills but haven't used them for a long time. In that case, a little review may help. A number of inexpensive books are available in bookstores that preview placement tests, including ACT tests (ACT is the organization that produces COMPASS). The public library might also have such books. Certain companies offer computer programs to help you prepare for placement tests.

Standardized Test Preparation
By Nell K. Duke and Ron Ritchhart
Let's face it, standardized tests are a fact of life. They remain a mainstay in most districts largely because of the comparative information they provide — information that too often is used alone to judge school, classroom, and individual performance. Ideally, standardized tests would be only one part of the overall assessment system. But until that day, we must make sure our students have the skills they need to ace standardized tests. Preparing kids for tests doesn't have to mean drills. In our work, we make explicit connections between good test-taking practices and good general-learning practices. Here, we share some of the strategies and ideas that have grown out of our efforts. In this article you'll find:
Three Surefire Strategies
For Reading Comprehension
A language-rich classroom, where students engage in regular guided and independent reading, is the ideal context for developing the skills needed to perform well on standardized tests. The following ideas work well every day, but they also come in handy at test time.

Q: What tests are available for advanced placement at the college or university where I choose to enroll?
Q: What is the PSAT and how is it used in the college admission process?
Recommendation:
Take the PSAT at least once - in the 11th grade. If you have a history of testing well, you may qualify for a National Merit Scholarship. Trial runs really do no harm; and, likely you will develop skills and confidence. Q: What tests will I be required to take for admission, and when should I take them?
Ans: Students need to be aware that many colleges and universities give applicants the option of reporting scores from either of two testing programs - the ACT or the SAT I. However, applicants need to be aware that some institutions may require or have a stated preference for one test or the other. Following are brief descriptions of each program. Bulletins describing the programs more completely are available in high school guidance offices, or you may call for information sent directly to you - ACT (319) 337-1270 and SAT I (609) 771-7600. How can I prepare my students for assessments?
This question has been sent to the T2T service by teachers of many different grade levels. Teachers and school systems assess students with a variety of tools, including standardized achievement tests, mastery tests, in-class tests, performance assessments, baseline assessments, and portfolio assessments. There are countless ways to prepare students, depending on the type of assessment being used. While this page contains many methods, it is just a place to start.
A teacher must understand what the assessment measures. Many standardized tests are not available for parents and teachers to view. Instead, information can be obtained directly from the test companies or from school administrators. What math topics will be covered? Is it a multiple choice test? What skills, strategies and problem-solving methods are involved?
It is also important to prepare students mentally so that test anxiety does not interfere with performance. Here is part of a response that Jenny Salls, one of our Teacher2Teacher Associates, wrote in an answer to a parent:

California State University is working closely with high schools to improve English and math skills
    By Kay Mills
Chula Vista, California Ann Ransburg and Kim Armbrust, teachers in the Sweetwater Union High School District south of San Diego, are on the front line of change as their schools and others in California try to prepare students for success in college. Ransburg teaches rhetoric and writing, and Armbrust teaches math. Both have helped to develop new courses because state educators felt that too many California students were not learning how to read expository texts, or needed another math class, even though they might not major in math or in science. For many years, students had demonstrated these weaknesses with failure rates on the California State University system's placement tests, taken by all first-time freshmen, that alarmed the Cal State Board of Trustees. In 1996, the trustees established a goal that all freshmen would be ready for college English and math by 2007. But it became clear as the years went by that too many students were still not doing well on the tests. A year ago, only 52 percent of entering freshmen passed the system's English placement test. Sixty-three percent passed the math placement test. The rest needed remediation.
