LD Forum: Council for Learning Disabilities
Winter 1996
Students with learning disabilities (LD) are increasingly receiving most of their mathematics instruction in general education classrooms. Studies show that these students benefit from general education mathematics instruction if it is adapted and modified to meet the individual needs of the learners (Salend,1994). Adaptations and modifications come in many forms. They can be as simple as using graph paper to help student with mathematics disabilities keep columnar addition straight or as complex as solving calculus equations with calculators. To ensure effective instruction, adaptations and modifications for instruction are necessary in the areas of lesson planning, teaching techniques, formatting content, adapting media for instruction, and adapting evaluation (Wood, 1992). For many teachers with limited or no preparation for working with students with LD, inclusion of students with mathematics disabilities may create concern. This article provides information on how to adapt and modify mathematics instruction to promote success and understanding in the areas of mathematical readiness, computation, and problem-solving for students with math disabilities. It also presents techniques that promote effective mathematics instruction for these students.

  • Geometry
Grade
  • K-2
Brief Description This lesson is designed to promote the use and understanding of the language associated with mathematics. Objectives
  • examine their names for mathematical concepts found therein.
  • express their names in mathematical terms/language.
  • look for math in other words and phrases.
Keywords math, vocabulary, imagination, creative Materials Needed
  • paper
  • pencils
  • dictionaries
  • imagination!
The Lesson This is a fun lesson to use at the beginning of the year, especially for math teachers; but it can be used at any time of year, and can be repeated during the year as students build analytical thinking skills and their math vocabulary. Begin the lesson by writing your own name (or perhaps the school's name) in LARGE BLOCK LETTERS on the board or a chart. Stand back and study the name, then make grade-appropriate mathematical comments about it; for example, I might begin by saying "My name is PAULINA. I can make a lot of mathematical comments about my name. There are seven letters in PAULINA. The L is the middle letter. The L is a right angle. There are two A's; the letter A is a congruent letter. The P and the A's have a similar property; they all contain one enclosed space. The I is vertical, but if it was rotated it would be horizontal..." The idea is to include as many mathematical descriptions as you can think of for your name.

Thank you for your consideration, Melanie Date: 07/15/99 at 11:59:13 From: Doctor Peterson Subject: Re: Powers of 10 Hi, Melanie. We get questions about this frequently, so I did a little extra research to find the details beyond what's in our archives. Here's a page on the Web that tells about the origin of the words googol and googolplex: How Many? A Dictionary of Units of Measurement http://www.unc.edu/~rowlett/units/dictG.html This says: "googol a unit of quantity equal to 10^100 (1 followed by 100 zeroes). The googol was invented by the American mathematician Edward Kasner (1878- 1955) in 1938. According to the story, Kasner asked his nephew Milton Sirotta, who was then 8 years old, what name he would give to a really large number, and "googol" was Milton's response. Kasner also defined the googolplex, equal to 10^googol, that is, 1 followed by a googol of zeroes. These inventions caught the public's fancy and are often mentioned in discussions of very large numbers." A slightly different version is in Googolplex http://www.fpx.de/fp/Fun/Googolplex/

If you have a graph theory page, let me know and I might include a link to it from my page for links to other people's files . I won't usually link to commercial pages. Please note also: I have received requests for assistance on problems that are standard undergraduate exercises. The most I will do in these situations is point out the exercise in a standard text (in case the writer doesn't realize that it is a standard problem) or refer the writer to a chapter in a standard textbook.
Very Brief History
The earliest paper on graph theory seems to be by Leonhard Euler, Solutio problematis ad geometriam situs pertinentis, Commetarii Academiae Scientiarum Imperialis Petropolitanae 8 (1736), 128-140. Euler discusses whether or not it is possible to stroll around Konigsberg (later called Kaliningrad) crossing each of its bridges across the Pregel (later called the Pregolya) exactly once. Euler gave the conditions which are necessary to permit such a stroll.
Thomas Pennyngton Kirkman (1856) and William Rowan Hamilton (1856) studied trips which visited certain sites exactly once.
