The Program
The 1992 Mathematics Framework for California Public Schools calls for fundamental change in "the mathematics we teach, how we teach it, and to whom." This new Certificate in Mathematics Enrichment supports K-8 teachers as they implement the recommendations of the Framework. This program was designed especially for teachers, in cooperation with the Mathematics Department and the Center for Math Education at CSUSB. You will discover that you need not possess a strong mathematical background or be particularly mathematically inclined to be successful. The Framework identifies eight strands of mathematics content, including such traditional areas as numbers and geometry, and less familiar ones like discrete math, and patterns and functions. Each course in the program will focus on one or more of these strands. Those who complete the program will gain an overview of all the content areas and their connections. The Framework also calls for classrooms in which students work in groups as well as individually, carry out extended projects as well as short exercises, and can choose appropriate mathematical tools, whether computers, calculators, or paper and pencil. The courses in this program model this kind of environment and provide teachers with engaging, hands-on activities to take back to the classroom.

MCTM Annual Conference
The Maryland Council of Teachers of Mathematics (MCTM) will hold the 2005 Annual Conference at New Town High School in Owings Mills, Maryland on October 21, 2005. This year’s conference theme, Mathematics without Limits, represents the very best that Maryland mathematics has to offer. With so many pressures surrounding the world of mathematics education, it is vital that teachers continue to focus on the importance of understanding the standards and processes of mathematics and not simply end up developing techniques to ‘teach to the test.’
This year’s conference will offer numerous strategies on how to help all students reach mathematical understanding and the high expectations presented by the Maryland School Assessment. Presentations will offer participants strategies for breaking the limits that testing and the pressure that testing can produce and will reinforce allowing each and every student to reach their ultimate talent within the world of

Dyscalculia:
Letter to my Math Teacher
(517) 729-9108 Renee Newman, Director Dyscalculia Resources
Dear Math Professor:
(1.) On tests, please allow me scrap paper with lines and ample room for uncluttered figuring. (2.) I need instant answers and a chance to do the problem over once if I get it wrong the first time. Often my mistakes are the result of "seeing" the problem wrong. To AVOID this, you would have to watch as I went through each problem and correct any mistakes in recording as they happened. (3.) Problems written too closely together on the page cause me mental confusion and distress. (4.) Please make the test problems pure, testing only the required skills. They must be free of large numbers and unnecessary distracting calculations. These side-track me into a frenzy! (5.) Please allow me more than the standard time to complete problems and please check to see that I am free of panic (tears in my eyes, mind frozen). (6.) If possible, please allow me to take the exam on a one-to-one basis in your presence. (7.) Most importantly, never forget that I WANT to learn this and retain it! But realize that math is very DIFFERENT than other subjects for me. It is traumatic! The slightest misunderstanding or break in logic overwhelms me with tears and panic. Please understand that I have attempted and failed many times and math is a highly emotional subject for me. Pity will not help me at all, but your patience and individual attention will. I do not know why this is so hard for me. It is like my math memory bank keeps getting accidently erased. And I cannot figure out how to correct the system errors!

Max's Math Adventures is a math and language arts game created specifically for students in grades K-2. Each adventure focuses on one math skill integral to the K-2 math curriculum. Hosts Max and Ruthie challenge young students to solve real-world math problems by using clues embedded in a fun, rhyming poem. Students will receive immediate feedback from Max, and are often encouraged to self-assess by comparing their answers to Max and Ruthie's. In addition to Max's Challenge, students can also try their hands at the Extra Challenges. Here you'll find extension activities of different levels to accommodate your students' varying needs. There is also an Activity Page for you to print out and distribute to your class. This page offers students an additional activity related to the poem and a blackline illustration to color in. His presentation and materials are outstanding for multiple grade levels and student abilities." Linda Munson, Director Special Programs, South Kitsap School District, WA "Mark Wahl had what we needed and he was right on the mark! He makes teachers think about common math ideas differently and extends their conceptual abilities in many areas. We have found his presentations highly useful for teachers and helpful for parents trying to come up to speed with new math curriculum." Aaron Feik, Math/Science Coordinator, Northshore School District, WA "I can't begin to tell you how impressed my faculty is with your book, Math for Humans. The book is not only filled with good ideas and strategies, it de-mystifies math for those of us who have difficulty balancing our checkbooks!... You should feel very, very good about your ability to help teachers move foreword!" Thomas Hoerr, Ph.D., author of teacher resource books and director of The New City School, St., Louis, Missouri
