Index Guided Tour I n the 21st century, airplanes are a normal part of everyday life. We see them fly over, or read about them, or see them on television. Most of us have traveled on an airplane, or we know someone who has. Do you ever wonder how airplanes fly? What causes the lift that gets the airplane off the runway? How does a pilot control the movement of the airplane? Why are the engines on an airliner different from the engines on a fighter plane? How does aerodynamics affect the flight of a model rocket or a kite? The information at this site is provided by the NASA Glennn Learning Technologies Project (LTP) to give you a better understanding of how aircraft work.

ANGLE PROPERTIES OF SCALENE TRIANGLES
GRADES: 4-9
MATERIALS:
  • sheets of blank paper.
  • protractors
  • straight edge of some kind
METHOD:
  • Draw ten different triangles. Label each vertex of the triangle using numbers one, two, three. Put the numbers at the vertex of each angle, outside the triangle.
  • Using your protractor, measure all angles of each triangle. Record the measurements of each angle inside the triangle.
  • Complete the following chart: Triangle, Angle 1, Angle 2, Angle 3, Sum of the three angles
  • Record any patterns that you find regarding the angles of a triangle.
This lesson can be varied to determine the properties of isoceles, and equilateral triangles as well.
This lesson creates ownership for the student, ensuring that they will never Forget these properties.

Welcome to the Beginner's Guide to Aerodynamics What is aerodynamics? The word comes from two Greek words: aerios , concerning the air, and dynamis , meaning powerful. Aerodynamics is the study of forces and the resulting motion of objects through the air. Judging from the story of Daedalus and Icarus, humans have been interested in aerodynamics and flying for thousands of years, although flying in a heavier-than-air machine has been possible only in the last hundred years. Aerodynamics affects the motion of a large airliner, a model rocket, a beach ball thrown near the shore, or a kite flying high overhead. The curveball thrown by big league baseball pitchers gets its curve from aerodynamics. At this Web site you can study aerodynamics at your own pace and to your own level of interest. Some of the topics included are: Newton's basic equations of motion ; the motion of a free falling object, that neglects the effects of aerodynamics; the terminal velocity of a falling object subject to both weight and

    Making a Pi Necklace
    by Diana Funke
As a 7th grade math teacher, I like to make mathematics as visual as possible. For Pi Day, my students make Pi necklaces. I use Pi as a way of introducing my students to the idea of an irrational number. After studying decimals that terminate or repeat, I ask them to bring in a can and we compare the circumference to the diameter by dividing C by d. This is how they find out what Pi is all about. I have them make a Pi necklace to reinforce the idea that some numbers never repeat or end. We usually use from 100 to 300 beads, depending on the size of the bead. They assign a color to each digit (including 0) and then string beads of those colors into a necklace, using the digits of Pi as their guide. Some students make their own beads with polymer clay and others string store-bought beads of all sizes. The first bead, representing the number three, is bigger than the rest. (In the illustration, the necklace has a big silver triangular "bead" as the whole number 3 part of Pi.)
