Gertrude Blanch
Contributed by Dr. David Greer , George Washington University
Gertrude Blanch (1898-1996) was a pioneer in numerical analysis and computation. She was born in Poland, emigrated to the United States in 1907 and graduated from Brooklyn's eastern District High School in 1914. For the next fourteen years, she worked as a clerk in New York so that she might be able to save money for college. She enrolled in NYU night school in 1928 and graduated four years later, Summa Cum Laude, a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She received her Ph.D. from Cornell in Analytic Geometry in 1936. The Depression was a difficult time to start a mathematical career and she was able to find only a substitute teaching job at Hunter College. In 1938, she became technical director of the Mathematical Tables Project in New York City, a WPA human computer group. At the Math Tables Project, Blanch oversaw 450 human computers who were calculating tables of functions. In all, the group produced 28 volumes of tables, many of which contain no known errors. During World War II, Blanch and the Math Tables Project worked for the Applied Mathematics Panel of the Office for Scientific Research and Development. She oversaw calculations for the Army, Navy, Manhattan Project and dozens of defense industries. After the war, she joined first the Institute for Numerical Analysis at UCLA and later the Aerospace Research Laboratory at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. She published over thirty papers on functional approximation, numerical analysis and Mathieu functions. She was elected a Fellow in the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1962 and was given the Federal Woman's Award from President Lyndon Johnson in 1964.

91. Fun With Science
A professional geophysicist maintains this collection of resources for classroom demonstrations and handson exercises about physics, earth science, earthquakes, math and fun illusions. Includes videos of earthquake shake tables.
http://www.jclahr.com/science/
If you're looking for ideas for a science fair project or demonstration, these pages may help you find a topic that would be fun to explore. They also provide ideas for teachers who are looking for classroom demonstrations or hands-on, inquiry-based student exercises to expand their curriculum. I am a Emeritus US Geological Survey Geophysicist specializing in seismology and earthquake location programming. I enjoy all sorts of science and would like to see more K-16 lessons taught on the subjects of tectonics, earthquake processes and earthquake hazards. In addition to Earth Science classes, these topics could be covered within general science, physics, math, and even social studies and geography classes. Not only do earthquakes provide an interesting context within which to teach concepts that are already part of the curriculum of these other subjects, the eventual result of incorporating these topics would be a greater understand and appreciation of the value of mitigating the hazardous effects of future earthquakes within the population as a whole. Projects and lesson plans described in the Earth Science section include a table-top earthquake demonstration, an earthshaking lab, a shake table, and a paper model that illustrates sea floor spreading, subduction, faulting, and the source of volcanic arcs.

Web Math Collaboration: sharing math on the Internet (WMC)
WMC is a federation of mathematical Web sites with similar goals and principles. The purpose of WMC is to promote mathematics, via the Web, on the scope of knowledge, instruction, and research, including, for example, to
  • provide freely accessible open spaces for people to collaborate on and discuss mathematical subjects,
  • help those who have difficulties in mathematics,
  • provide mathematical resources to the public.
The WMC philosophy rests on gratuitousness, ergonomics, and cooperation:
  • Exemption from payment : Information and activities supported by WMC are free of charge for private and noncommercial use.
  • Ergonomics : The functionalities available to WMC users are, as far as possible, natural, simple, and effective so as to remain accessible and useful to the greatest number.
  • Cooperation : WMC members maintain privileged relations between themselves. These relations make it possible in particular for each member to improve the quality of the services that it provides within the framework of WMC while profiting from, experimenting with, and progressing functions or software of the other members. These privileged relations imply the obligation of each member to provide an easily accessible page containing this text and clear links toward the other WMC members and toward the WMC council.
Each WMC member is represented within WMC by one of its administrators. The whole of these representatives is the WMC

Cohomology of modules over the mod 2 Steenrod algebra
Robert R. Bruner
Wayne State University
Ext(M,F_2) for a number of modules M over the mod 2 Steenrod algebra. Here F_2 is short for GF(2). Two variants are presented. The second set shows multiplications by all h_i's. The first shows only h0, h1, and h2. The second is generally readable only under magnification. NEW!
For a few modules, GIFs are presented as well as Postcript files. The GIFs are more convenient, but the .ps files have better resolution, so view the GIFs first, and use the Postscript for detail. Several of the modules are described by an ascii file in the format needed by the programs, which I will refer to as the module definition format For each module M, I note the internal degrees t and homological degree s through which the calculation is complete. Homological degree is displayed vertically and total degree t-s is displayed horizontally as customary. If you would like to see a module not shown here, or would like to see the calculation for a particular module extended, email me.

96. Tables Of Drinfeld Modules
Complete tables of signnormalized, rank one, Drinfeld modules on the elliptic curves over finite fields of order less than 16.
http://www.math.umass.edu/~dhayes/dmods.html
Tables of rank one Drinfeld modules
Complete tables of sign-normalized, rank one, Drinfeld modules on the elliptic curves over finite fields of order less than 16 were computed by Dummit and Hayes ( Mathematics of Computation , 875-883) in 1994. These tables are available in two usable formats by anonymous ftp . The first format is designed for inclusion in TeX documents, and the second is designed to be read into Mathematica notebooks. See also D. Dummit, Genus two hyperelliptic Drinfeld modules over F2 , The Arithmetic of Function Fields, Proceedings of a Workshop at Ohio State University, June 17-26, 1991, de Gruyter, Berlin and New York, 1992, pp. 117-129.

The conjecture states that for any integer n 1 there are integers a, b, and c with 4/n = 1/a + 1/b + 1/c, a 0, b 0, c 0. The page establishes that the conjecture is true for all integers n, 1 n = 10^14. tables and software by Allan Swett.

Allan Swett, Current Research on ESC... rev. 10/28/99 The Erdos-Strauss Conjecture 4/n = 1/a + 1/b + 1/c,
(Note: Some of the linked pages are under revision.)
Principal Ideas, Part 1: A C++ Program
One may establish ESC(n) for a particular class of integers n using an identity. For example, the identity 4/(2+3x) = 1/(2+3x) + 1/(1+x) + 1/((1+x)(2+3x)) establishes that ESC(n) is true for n = 2, 5, 8, 11, 14, 17, ... (simply take x = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, ...). That is, ESC(n) is true for all positive integers n which are congruent to 2, mod 3. (Two integers are said to be "congruent mod n", if and only if n divides their difference. We abbreviate the fact that A and B are congruent mod n as A == B (mod n) .) A "generic" identity provides a set of similar results: Vocabulary: S(n)
AX + W == (mod 4n-1) for some positive integer divisors X and W of n. Let E(n) denote the set of positive integers congruent, mod 4n-1, to an element of S(n). Then Theorem: Link to a proof of the Theorem.
