LD Forum: Council for Learning Disabilities
Spring 1996
According to the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM; 1991), learning environments should be created that promote active learning and teaching; classroom discourse; and individual, small-group, and whole-group learning. Cooperative learning is one example of an instructional arrangement that can be used to foster active student learning, which is an important dimension of mathematics learning and highly endorsed by math educators and researchers. Students can be given tasks to discuss, problem solve, and accomplish. Cooperative learning activities can be used to supplement textbook instruction by providing students with opportunities to practice newly introduced or to review skills and concepts. Teachers can use cooperative learning activities to help students make connections between the concrete and abstract level of instruction through peer interactions and carefully designed activities. Finally, cooperative learning can be used to promote classroom discourse and oral language development. Wiig and Semel (1984) described mathematics as "conceptually dense." That is, students must understand the language and symbols of mathematics because contextual clues, like those found in reading, are lacking in mathematics. For example, math vocabulary (e.g., greater-than, denominator, equivalent) and mathematical symbols (e.g., =, <, or >) must be understood to work problems as there are no contextual clues to aid understanding. In a cooperative learning activity, vocabulary and symbolic understanding can be facilitated with peer interactions and modeling.

International Mathematical
Talent Search
The International Mathematical Talent Search (IMTS) was an
extension of the USA Mathematical Talent Search (USAMTS),
a year-round problem-solving program in mathematics. It was
initiated in 1991 in the Mathematics and Informatics Quarterly
, and was discontinued 10 years later, in 2001. During
its 10 years of operation, each round of the IMTS featured 5
challenging problems for students at the secondary level;
these problems are featured below as a service of the Canadian
Mathematical Society. Problem Rounds Notes:
  • Round 44 was the final round of IMTS problems.
  • The USAMTS has the same problems as the IMTS (although numbered differently) and is continuing.
  • The USAMTS website includes some solutions to recent problems.
  • The Mathematics and Informatics Quarterly featured solutions to the first 40 rounds of problems of the IMTS, as well as to those problems of the USAMTS, which preceded (by 2 years) the IMTS

Student Forum Page
Each year, typically in November or December, the Courant Institute holds a discussion style forum where the concerns, suggestions, and compliments of students are brought up in an organized, anonymous fashion. Attendance is relatively wide (by faculty, staff, and students), and this gives the meeting a somewhat democratic flavor. Courant's administration takes this forum very seriously and students should use the opportunity to improve student life here, as well as to recognize improvements made in the past. Among recent topics have been issues regarding curriculum design, examinations (including foreign language exams), computing, teaching assignments, mentoring, and office atmosphere. Past successes have included the switch to 24-hour building access, changes in the policies regarding the Written Exams, and some curriculum improvements. The forum is a work in progress but also an excellent way to let administrators know what's going on with student life at CIMS. The forum is organized every year by Tamar and a student volunteer. Together they work in advance to prepare an agenda of topics that will be discussed. The student volunteer solicits ideas for the agenda from the rest of the student body. Students should feel free, and even compelled, to send in whatever they think should be included. As the date approaches more information about this will arrive in your e-mail.

Program: The summer school is particularly aimed at students in number theory, algebra and algebraic geometry.
The course will consist of three intertwined lecture series, "Elliptic modular forms and their applications" (Don Zagier)
"Hilbert modular forms and their applications" (Jan Bruinier)
"Siegel modular forms and their applications" (Gerard van der Geer) The first of these will treat the classical one-variable theory and some of its many applications in number theory (representations of numbers by quadratic forms, irrationality and transcendence results, moments of periodic functions, ...), algebraic geometry (counting of coverings of curves), and mathematical physics (appearance of modular forms in percolation theory, string theory, etc.) The second, which has a more geometric flavor, will give an introduction to the theory of Hilbert modular forms in two variables (i.e., over real quadratic fields), the geometry of Hilbert modular surfaces, and to Borcherds products and the Borcherds lifting. The third will give an introduction to Siegel modular forms (both scalar- and vector-valued) and present a beautiful application to the theory of curves of finite fields (Harder's conjecture).
