Introduction
Many of the articles on this Web site are versions of the Fermi Problem described in the first section. Others are essays - some short, some long. Some are merely attempts to come to terms with basic concepts, such as the 'size' of the speed of light or the number 'one trillion'. Others discuss more advanced concepts. The last few essays involve college-level physics, and might be difficult for those who have not taken at least some introductory courses. The essays discussing the gravitational field energy density and the thermodynamic four-vector are speculative and invite comments from you, the reader. The earlier pieces are nowhere near so involved, and require only a little number skill and, possibly, some high school algebra. Enrico Fermi, the theoretical physicist of Manhattan Project fame, knew only too well that physicists are often confronted by situations in which they are forced to reason from minimal information. He, therefore, taught his students how to think about complicated sounding problems by using everyday knowledge. The 'Piano Tuner' is typical: "If 3,000,000 people live in Chicago, then how many of them are piano tuners?"

Numerical linear algebra technique to arrive at faster pagerank technology than Google's
Google page rank technology changed the way the world searched the internet. Well, change is constant, we are close to seeing a better technology (or if we call it a emerging technique for now) coming up.
Researchers at Stanford University have developed techniques fr computing Google-style web rankings up to five times faster; As a result of this speed-up it may make 'Topic-sensitive' page rankings feasible.
According to NSF ( National Science Foundation) article: To speed up PageRank, the Stanford team developed a trio of techniques in numerical linear algebra. First, in the WWW2003 paper, they describe so-called "extrapolation" methods, which make some assumptions about the Web's link structure that aren't true, but permit a quick and easy computation of PageRank. Because the assumptions aren't true, the PageRank isn't exactly correct, but it's close and can be refined using the original PageRank algorithm. The Stanford researchers have shown that their extrapolation techniques can speed up PageRank by 50 percent in realistic conditions and by up to 300 percent under less realistic conditions.
The research team at Stanford includes graduate students Sepandar Kamvar and Taher Haveliwala, noted numerical analyst Gene Golub and computer science professor Christopher Manning.

83. A Message To Students
You are good at math when you can get the right answer fast. Read the mail from other students. Write a letter to Megamath. Tell us about yourself.
http://www.c3.lanl.gov/mega-math/student.html
A Message To Students
Guess what?
  • None of these things are true!
    • Mathematics is mostly about numbers.
    • It takes a special kind of brain to do mathematics.
    • You have to learn a lot of special symbols if you are going to be good at math.
    • You are good at math when you can get the right answer fast.
    • Only a specialist can understand the newest discoveries in mathematics.
  • All of these things are true!
    • Only a very small part of mathematics is about numbers. Knots, logic, infinity, and imaginary shapes are important mathematical topics.
    • There are so many different topics in mathematics that everyone can find something that they like and are good at.
    • Mathematicians use symbols as a shortcut for writing down their ideas. The ideas are important, not the symbols.
    • Mathematicians sometimes try to find an answer to a question that nags them for years! Some problems have been unsolved for hundreds of years. You are good at math when you can be patient with yourself and give your brain time to think and work in the ways that it does best.
    • MegaMath is full of the newest discoveries and hottest topics in mathematics, and you will see that they are easy to understand and fun to play around with. Not only can you understand them, but you might be the one to make a new discovery.

Annual math tournament for high school students, held at MIT and at Harvard in alternating years.
http://web.mit.edu/hmmt/
HMMT 2006 will occur on either February 18 or February 25, 2006. The date should be finalized fairly soon. Registration is expected to open on October 1. The Harvard-MIT Mathematics Tournament (HMMT) is an annual math tournament for high school students, held at MIT and at Harvard in alternating years. It is run exclusively by MIT and Harvard students. Most of us participated in math contests in high school, and we try to incorporate what we liked best about those competitions into HMMT. We hope this will make the contest both challenging and entertaining for all the participants. Problems, solutions, and results from HMMT 2005 are now available! For HMMT 2006, we are conducting a T-Shirt Design Contest ! Submit a design to win fame and glory. If you are an MIT or Harvard student interested in helping either organize the tournament beforehand or run it on contest day, please contact hmmt-request@mit.edu Thank you, and we hope to see you next year at HMMT 2006! Precalculus Preparing Students for Calculus
    Precalculus , by Warren Esty
    New! Third edition.
A text designed to produce a deep understanding of algebra and trigonometry so that students will be comfortable with their next math Students will be well-prepared for calculus. This text is designed to be appropriate for self-study, as well as classroom use.
The content includes the usual precalculus material (functions, powers, polynomials, logs, exponentials, trig, etc.). Graphing calculators play an important role. However, this text is unlike others because it does not just use calculators to do old-style problems, but actually incorporates calculators as a learning tool and not just a "doing" tool. This text has been used at Montana State University and elsewhere by five dozen different instructors and thousands of students. A great deal of experience has gone into making this text an effective learning tool.
"As a home-schooled junior in high school this year, I used your Precalculus book. [clip] I would just like to thank you so much for writing that book. It changed my entire perspective on math. Up to this year, I considered math to be a distasteful medicine [clip]. No text book on a language was ever written better. I quickly became enthralled with your ideas, and now I love Math. Precalculus was my favorite subject this year [clip. Read the whole letter here
