INTRODUCTION
This series of Educational Kits, ``Exploring Our Universe: From The Classroom to Outer Space'' is being developed as an initiative of the FUSE (Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer) Project's Public Outreach and Education Program. The purpose of these education kits is to help secondary school students develop an understanding of how what they learn in science and math classes relates to the world in which they live, and how it applies to modern science and technology. The first kit, ``Spectroscopy: The Study of Light'' , focuses on how astronomers study and use light to learn about the universe: its origin, its evolution, and its fate. This puts basic concepts about light and the electromagnetic spectrum into a practical and exciting context. The second kit, The FUSE Satellite: Observing form Space , focuses on the science and mathematics of the satellite itself, allowing students to learn by solving problems related to the operation of a real satellite. Both kits relate classroom activities to an on-going NASA mission and provide the opportunity to follow important, exciting events.

Assessment Strategies to Facilitate Performance on External Tests Visit the Math Article Archive for more math-related content. At some point, your mathematics students will be expected to take an external exam, such as a state achievement test or a national standardized test. The following are a few tips you may find useful in planning for that assessment. Prior to the beginning of class
  • Learn about the content covered in the test.
Create a list of the skills addressed on the test and rank the skills in order of most coverage to least coverage on the test. Such a list does not tell you what to teach, but it gives you a quick reference of what the test weights as important. Learn about the types of questions that are asked and how the problems are scored.

Student-Led Parent Conferences Visit the Math Article Archive for more math-related content. Think of the last time you participated in a parent conference. For many teachers, it consists of sitting at a desk with a stack of report cards on one side and a schedule of fifteen- or twenty-minute appointments on the other. In the short time available, you try to describe what's on the report card and ask if the parent has any questions. By the eighth conference, you're tired and wondering, "Did I already say that?" While the conference is supposed to be about the child, in fact, the child is totally removed. More and more teachers are finding success with student-led parent conferences. Here students have the opportunity to reflect on and describe their learning. From both the teacher and their child, parents find out what and how their child is learning. In addition, teachers are able to educate parents about the complexity of learning and to remove the aura of secrecy that so often surrounds the assessment process. The goals of student-led parent conferences are:
  • Encourage students to accept personal responsibility for their academic performance.

The Many Ways of Arithmetic in UCSMP Everyday Mathematics
(Overview prepared by Bas Braams , New York University, Feb 2003)
Everyday Mathematics (Everyday Math, aka Chicago Math) is a K-6 curriculum developed by the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project (UCSMP) and published by Everyday Learning Corporation, a part of SRA McGraw-Hill. A notable feature of Everyday Mathematics is its presentation of multiple methods or procedures for the basic operations of arithmetic: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. This Web page, intended as a contribution to a collection of Reviews of Everyday Mathematics , describes the program's basic algorithms. The description is based on the the 3rd through 6th grade student reference books of Everyday Mathematics, 2nd edition (SRA/McGraw-Hill, 2002). At present this page describes only the Everyday Math algorithms for the four basic operations for whole number arithmetic. A description of the arithmetic of decimals, percents and fractions is left for another day. The Everyday Math Teacher Guides would be the best reference for the program authors' perspective on the role of the various algorithms within the curriculum. A short and easily accessible reference is the article

Memorized multiplication facts...a necessary tool... Memorization of the multiplication facts gives the math student a tool, an internal mental tool , to use in working out problems. Why is this tool necessary when a calculator is available? Picture yourself as a carpenter building a house. Can you imagine knowing how to build a house but not having a hammer? As a carpenter needs a hammer, the math student needs the tool of memorized multiplication facts. What happens without this tool? When the multiplication facts have not been committed to memory the thought process, during problem solving, is interrupted. "Thinking" switches from understanding the problem to the act of figuring a calculation . Even when momentarily stopping to use a calculator the thought process has been broken. As problems become more and more complex the student becomes less and less able to afford this break. Key to success...

Mathematics is the principal language of modern science and technology. In such diverse areas as physics, engineering, economics, and computer science, most of the subject matter is presented in mathematical terms. In addition, mathematical techniques are now being used in many areas which formerly were non-mathematical; for example, history, political science, and biology. Some students are drawn to mathematics because of the beauty they find in its structure and logic, others because it allows a deeper understanding of an allied area of study. Home based learning materials to supplement classroom work using Maths and English videos for ages 518. With over 40,000 students the results speak for themselves.

Children do not always achieve their full potential for a variety of reasons, and whilst parents know that their children have the ability, they may just need a little bit of extra help, to gain confidence and succeed with school work. Education cannot be bought off the shelf, as no two children are the same. Each child must be assessed to identify their strengths and weaknesses so that a course of study can be customised for that child. The Student Support Centre is one of the largest tutorial companies in the country and is dedicated to providing parents with proven method of supplementing classroom work for students aged between 4 and 17 years old. Using traditional methods, our internationally proven home study programmes concentrate on the two core subjects of Maths and English. The results achieved speak for themselves: Over the last year alone, our students have achieved an average pass mark of 94.9%. Whatever a child's ability, whether they are at the top, or bottom, of their class, these powerful learning programmes together with their inclusive support features, will give you the peace of mind that your children will have every opportunity to reach their full potential. http://www.student-support.co.uk/bar.gif

Are you planning on becoming a math teacher, or are you interested in math but don't know exactly what you want to do with it? If so, then the new University of Oregon joint masters program between the math department and the school of education might be just what you are looking for. The program allows you to graduate in two years, including both summers, with a masters in math and a teaching license. The purpose of the program is to unite the departments around the goal of educating good math teachers. In particular, they want to focus on developing methods of teaching mathematical reasoning that can be applied to different types of math, and they have a grant from the NSF to pursue research in this area. Thus students in the program will do research on this topic for the College of Education during their two years in the program. Math Student Results Continue to Slide in National Euclid Contest For the fourth year in the row, the performance of B.C. students deteriorated relative to those in Ontario in the Euclid Mathematics Contest, a 2.5-hour national exam based on Grade 12 curriculum. The percentage of B.C. students on the Honour Roll was 18 per cent in 2004, 25 per cent in 2003, 27 per cent in 2002 and 41 per cent in 2001. More than 3,000 contestants from 166 B.C. schools signed up for the exam on April 19, along with almost 9,000 from Ontario and 2,500 from the rest of Canada. The top 70 BC students and teachers from the top schools are invited to UBC for a special day of activities on May 30, 2005. Many of the Grade 12 students with exceptional results will be offered special UBC scholarships in recognition of their achievement.
