On Math... A Mathematician is a machine for turning coffee into theorems.
- Paul Erdos I mean the word proof not in the sense of the lawyers, who set two half proofs equal to a whole one, but in the sense of a mathematician, where half proof = 0, and it is demanded for proof that every doubt becomes impossible.
- Karl Friedrich Gauss Mathematics is a language.
- Josiah Willard Gibbs God not only plays dice. He also sometimes throws the dice where they cannot be seen. Stephen Hawking Perhaps the greatest paradox of all is that there are paradoxes in mathematics. E. Kasner and J. Newman The chief aim of all investigations of the external world should be to discover the rational order and harmony which has been imposed on it by God and which He revealed to us in the language of mathematics. - Johannes Kepler In my opinion, a mathematician, in so far as he is a mathematician, need not preoccupy himself with philosophy an opinion, moreover, which has been expressed by many philosophers.

To be sure, his art originated in the necessity for clothing such creatures, but this was long ago; to this day a shape will occasionally appear which will fit into the garment as if the garment had been made for it. Then there is no end of surprise and delight. mathematics

December 1 Allen, Woody (1935-,American film director, writer, actor): Standard mathematics has recently been rendered obsolete by the discovery that for years we have been writing the numeral five backward. This has led to reevaluation of counting as a method of getting from one to ten. Students are taught advanced concepts of Boolean algebra, and formerly unsolvable equations are dealt with by threats of reprisals. In Howard Eves' Return to Mathematical Circles, Boston: Prindle, Weber, and Schmidt, 1988. Anglin, W.S.

Quotes on Education
    Well, well, well!
One of our Loopers was out browsing and came across a webpage that had blocks of text suspiciously similar to this Illinois Loop quotations page. We checked, and sure enough!
None other than the National Education Association has a page on its website for Education Quotes that takes many of our quotes listed here verbatim, credit and all, many times in the same series in the same order. The NEA prefaces the page by saying that these quotes "may help you prepare remarks or materials for American Education Week." We're glad to see that someone at the NEA has come to rely on the Illinois Loop for valuable information!
Welcome to the Illinois Loop collection of quotations on education! For teachers and parents who value such antiquated concepts as "knowledge" and "teaching" , this huge collection of quotes will also provide ammunition as well as encouragement!
If you gag on the never-ending parade of out-of-context quotations posted up in classrooms as supposed arguments against substantive learning (e.g., "Imagination is more important than knowledge" Einstein) then you've come to the right place!

at Westfield State College
This page contains quotations that I have utilized in my mathematics classes at Westfield State College. My students have reacted quite favorably to the "quote of the day", and I have found it often helps me organize my thoughts about a central theme. It is often hard to find a quote that addresses an issue I would like to speak to, and often I find it even harder to put my hands on a quote I know I would like to use. It is my hope that this collection helpful in these endeavors as well as many others that I consider in my paper "Quotations for Every Mathematics Class".

Doron Zeilberger's Collection of Quotes
Last Update: April 22 , 2005. What's the most difficult aspect of your life as a mathematician, Diane Maclagan, an assistant professor at Rutgers, was asked.
"Trying to prove theorems," she said.
And the most fun?
"Trying to prove theorems."
quoted in the NY Times, June 19, 2005, Section 14 (New Jersey), p.1 (article by Fran Schumer). "(...(...(will there be infinitely many parentheses? Is it love when there are infinitely many parentheses?)...)...)
Aner Shalev, "Dark Matter" [Zmora-Bitan, 2004](in Hebrew), p. 115.
Bernard Beauzamy, "Real life Mathematics", Irish Math. Soc. Bull. 48 (2002), 43-46. "...All the wonders of our universe can in effect be captured by simple rules, yet [...] there can be no way to know all the consequences of these rules, except in effect just to watch and see how they unfold."
Stephen Wolfram ("A New Kind of Science", last sentence (p. 846)) "The evidence peculiar to this defective way of knowing - an evidence on the strength of which mathematics plumes itself and proudly struts before philosophy - rests solely on the poverty of its purpose and the defectiveness of its material, and is on that account of a kind that philosophy must scorn to have anything to do with."
Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel ("The Phenomenology of Mind", 0.45)
