Last update: December 14, 2001 Welcome to my page of math problems. Anyone with an appreciation of a good math problem should find something they like here, with problems ranging from basic math to differential equations. Each problem also comes with a difficulty rating from one to four stars. This is roughly a measure of how much time it took me to do the problem. Since your math background is likely different from mine your experience is likely to vary. The Math Problems

Construction is the mathematical theme of September's NRICH content and, as this topic suggests, there is a practical feel to many of the problems.
At the lower levels, Chairs and Tables involves hands-on building using interlocking cubes and requires a bit of thought about scale. Stringy Quads will inspire you to find some string (along with a few friends) in order to solve its symmetry challenges.
If you fancy getting out your pencil, ruler and pair of compasses, Yin Yang is the problem for you. For those of you at a higher level, Three Tears only requires the use of a pair of compasses, but can you make each tear the right area? Pentabuild follows a similar idea, taking it further by asking you to adapt a given construction.

Tom Murray, the coordinator of the the math puzzle, has been kind enough to give CM permission to run the weekly Little Math Puzzle Contest (inspired by The Great Canadian Trivia Challenge.) The holidays disrupted the schedules of both CM and the math puzzle, so there's a lot of catching up to do . . . but you can find archives of old questions and winners lists on the math puzzle web page: http://www.odyssee.net/~academy/mathpuzzle/mathpuzzlecontest.html Royal West Academy (a high school) in Montreal, Quebec is sponsoring a little math puzzle contest. This contest is open to all participants but is designed for students in grades five through ten. English will be the language used for all problems and if their solutions relate to a language, the language will be English. January begins a new year of puzzles.
The thought for the year: "Change your paradigm."
Contest Format:
The math puzzle is also available through SchoolNet; in CM, a new puzzle will be presented each Friday and the answers and winners from two weeks earlier will be posted. Answers are to be received by 8:00 a.m. eastern time the following Friday. The answers will then be judged, and a correct answer, along with the winners' names, will be posted with the puzzle two weeks later.

Millennium Problems
In order to celebrate mathematics in the new millennium, The Clay Mathematics Institute of Cambridge, Massachusetts (CMI) has named seven Prize Problems . The Scientific Advisory Board of CMI selected these problems, focusing on important classic questions that have resisted solution over the years. The Board of Directors of CMI designated a $7 million prize fund for the solution to these problems, with $1 million allocated to each. During the Millennium Meeting The Importance of Mathematics , aimed for the general public, while John Tate and Michael Atiyah spoke on the problems. The CMI invited specialists to formulate each problem. One hundred years earlier, on August 8, 1900, David Hilbert delivered his famous lecture about open mathematical problems at the second International Congress of Mathematicians in Paris. This influenced our decision to announce the millennium problems as the central theme of a Paris meeting. The rules for the award of the prize have the endorsement of the CMI Scientific Advisory Board and the approval of the Directors. The members of these boards have the responsibility to preserve the nature, the integrity, and the spirit of this prize.
