PUZZLES and GAMES WARNING!!!

The puzzles on this site are very difficult, and most require the use of a good spreadsheet program in order to solve them. It will take many hours, perhaps days, to solve each puzzle. They are intended for people with a degree in math, or those capable of attaining one. For easier puzzles see the links.

MATH PUZZLES 1-71
Daryl Cooper South Hall 6522 UCSB
The puzzles below vary in difficulty, generally later ones are harder. Almost all of them I have heard from other people. They are purely for amusement. I do not give out answers. I am always on the lookout for new puzzles. They should be unusual. Most routine puzzles are of no interest to me. [1] An ant starts at one end of a rubber band and walks along it at a speed of 1 inch per second. The rubber band is 10 inches long, and is being stretched uniformly at a rate of 20 inches per second. Does the ant ever reach the other end of the rubber band?. Give reasons. [2] Can you subdivide a cube into finitely many smaller cubes no two of which have the same size? [3] What is the maximum number of knights that you can place on a chess board so that no knight threatens (ie can jump onto) any other knight? Can you show your answer is the best possible? [4] Suppose I take a chess board, and remove two squares from opposite corners (ie the corners are on the same DIAGONAL) Is it possible to cover the remaining squares using dominoes, where each domino covers two adjacent squares? [5] There are 12 balls, identical in appearance. One of the balls is either heavier or lighter than the others. If I give you a balance and allow you to make 3 weighings, how could you arrange to discover which ball is the odd one out, and whether it is heavier or lighter than the others? [using a balance, you can weigh balls on one side against balls on the other side]

Sudoku Variations
The Magic Sudoku puzzle by Alexandre Owen Muniz a few weeks back was very popular . I followed it up with a Math Games column about Sudoku Variations . An unsung hero in this is Wei-Hwa Huang, who sent me an enormously helpful list of Sudoku types . Alan O'Donnell sent solutions (and corrections) for every puzzle in the column "I think I can say I've truly conquered this genre of puzzle now." Bob Harris mentioned that the Geometric Sudoku are also known as Latin Squares , with only one given per region. Bob Harris: It's amazing to me how much more difficult generating an 8x8 puzzle seems to be than a . Here's an 8x8 (below). Probably pretty hard, but at least 3 cells can be labeled quickly and a couple other matches (this cell is the same as this other cell) can also be identified.

You want math puzzles?
Here's a math puzzle. Taken from the 46th International Mathematical Olympiad , held in rainy Merida, Mexico: In a mathematical competition 6 problems were posed to the contestants. Each pair of problems was solved by more than two-fifths of the contestants. Nobody solved all 6 problems. Show that there were at least 2 contestants who each solved exactly 5 problems. Give yourself four hours and thirty minutes. Incidentally, Romania won four gold medals, a silver, and a bronze at the Olympiad out of her six contestants. They're all high school students. Posted by coyu at July 20, 2005 02:51 PM
Comments A nice problem! I got it in a minute or two
without pencil and paper, but that's because I
teach undergrad discrete math. I think this
would be a good homework problem for my
students, but maybe too tricky for an exam. A hint: Remember the Lake Wobegon Principle,
which says that it is not possible for every
number in a set to be above average (strictly
greater than the arithmetic mean).

Author's Product Rating
Pros
many cross sums in each issue, all math and logic all the time Cons only six issues per year The Bottom Line If you like math then you'll love this magazine. If you enjoy mysteries and deduction you'll love this magazine. This isn't your typical puzzle magazine - it's better. Full Review Sadly most people seem to think math is this horrid thing they have to live through in school so they can get to the rest of their lives. It doesn't have to be that way. Math can be invigorating, provide a real brain rush. It can also be fun. Dell Math Puzzles and Logic Problems presents the fun side of math through a variety of games and puzzles. Published six times each year (in January, March, May, July, September, and November) the magazine is a mixture of these math puzzles and logic puzzles. Both types should appeal to the intellectuals among you, to those folks who like to exercise their brain even when a grade or promotion isn't on the line.
