Title - Writing paragraphs from formulas
By - Mary Jane Reed
Primary Subject - Language Arts
Grade Level - 3-REMEDIAL ADULT
BETTER PARAGRAPHS USING MATH FORMULAS This is a way to visually teach steps in writing a paragraph. This is useful for LD students especially those with a math strength. It gives the student a framework and allows them to plug in each area in a model to be copied. This unit can be an introduction and practice technique for grades as low as 3 and 4. It can be used independently to remediate writing difficulties or as a single tool taught in a battery of paragraph writing skills. The lessons can be modeled and the steps projected on a wall or enlarged to be self-checking posters to be displayed. A further use would be to provide this unit as a packet the student uses in class and/or takes with them to use with homework and writing in other areas. A teaching plan would be as follows: Day One Introduce concept of steps in writing paragraphs. Define topic sentence, detail sentences, concluding sentences. Use examples in packet or use those from textbooks.

ASCIIMathML is far too useful to bury on my del.icio.us website. It’s an easy way to put up math formulas on websites. Here is how it is described on its home page “Translating ASCII math notation to Presentation MathML (HTML version): Would you or your students like to easily produce good-looking math formulas on webpages using a simple calculator-style syntax and your own ASCII or HTML editor? Here is a free multi-platform solution (and if you prefer it, LaTeX-style formulas also work).” Simply wonderful.

At 6 pm, they all leave the lot one by one. What is the probability that the license plate numbers of the first four cars to leave are in increasing order of magintude?
I am quoting a legend here : Any four cars have an equal chance of leaving the lot first, so we can concentrate on just one specific bunch of four cars. (Whether there are 999 or just 4 cars in the lot is irrelevant). For a given set of four cars, they can leave the lot in 4! or 24 ways, only one of which the license plate numbers will be in increasing order. Hence, the answer is 1/24. In how many ways can 4 groups of 2 each be selected from a group of 8 students?

The software distributed under the name "AMS-LaTeX" consists of various extensions for LaTeX. AMS-LaTeX is part of the standard LaTeX distribution, and is also mirrored on CTAN. The distribution is divided into two parts:
    • The amscls part contains AMS "document class" files and a theorem package that can be used independently. These provide the setup necessary to give a LaTeX document the general structure and appearance of an AMS article or book.
The amsmath part is an extension package for LaTeX that provides various features to facilitate writing math formulas and to improve the typographical quality of their output.

There are three environments that put LaTeX in math mode: math, displaymath, and equation. The math environment is for formulas that appear right in the text. The displaymath environment is for formulas that appear on their own line. The equation environment is the same as the displaymath environment except that it adds an equation number in the right margin. The math environment can be used in both paragraph and LR mode, but the displaymath and equation environments can be used only in paragraph mode. Introduction
This article demonstrates how to generate a quasi-infinite number of sounds using math formulas. Also, a sample program is provided to allow you to do experimentation by your own. Have great times!
    Background
A sound is basically a sine wave traveling in the air. It is characterized by a power and a frequency. The power determines the sound loudness and the frequency determines its pitch. If you are not familiar with this phenomenon, I propose you to start the sample program right now!
    Sound frequency
First, try some variant of “sin(x*t)”, beginning with x equal to 20 and increasing it progressively by step of 20. In that expression, “x” represents the frequency in Hertz and “t” is the time variable, varying from to 2pi rad in one second. Maybe with x = 20 you will hear nothing. If this is the case, don’t get mad, it’s just that your speakers can’t handle a so low frequency. (By the way, this is a good method to test your speakers’ quality.) For reference, humans generally can hear sine waves between 30Hz to 20000Hz.

Introduction to LaTeX: 2. Typing Math
Text and math modes (review from Part 1)
Text mode. This is the normal, or default, mode of TeX. TeX stays in that mode unless it encounters a special instruction that causes it to switch to one of the math modes, and it returns to text mode following a corresponding instruction that indicates the end of math mode. Ordinary (inline) math mode. Mathematical material to be typeset inline must be surrounded by single dollar signs. For example: "$a^2 + b^2 = c^2$". The single dollar signs surrounding this expression cause TeX to enter and exit (ordinary) math mode. Display math mode.

Fill in the blanks and typeset the statement first inline, and then with the "lim ..." formula displayed on a single line. Observe how TeX typesets the limit differently, depending on the context.
