I'm curious about how the opportunities and organizations vary around the country. I'll lead off with Southern California, and try to set a format: Name: CSULB Math Day at the Beach Since: 2000 When: A Saturday in March (will be March 19, 2005) Where: Campus of California State University, Long Beach

This year 139 schools competed. "I'm always amazed at the wealth, breadth and depth of talent and skill our students possess," said Cindy Kerr , MS Math Teacher and dept. chair. "This year's CAML results, however, are truly exceptional." Kerr reported that Harker did extremely well in the individual placements, as well as the grade level wins. In the Individual Placement area, Joseph P ., Gr. 8 was one of only three students in the state earning a perfect top score of 40. Jay S . was one of eight in the state earning the second highest score of 39. Alex F . and Spencer L . were two of 21 8th graders in the state earning the third highest score of 38. New Brunswick Department of Education Students from across the entire province come to the Fredericton campus of UNB and the Moncton, Edmundston and Shippagan campuses of U de M to write a multiple choice exam during the morning in either French or English. With computer grading we are able to present prizes to provincial and district winners in the afternoon. While the students are waiting, the universities conduct tours and demonstrations of various university facilities. Some of the features of the competition are:
    • The competition rewards students for academic excellence for a change.
    • The interaction between universities and schools is promoted.
    • It is a bilingual effort.
    • We also have several sponsors - in 2004 they included CIBC Wood Gundy, Morneau Sobeco and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Representatives Program. Click on their logos for more information.

Every autumn, the University of Maryland organizes a High School Mathematics Competition, open to high school students enrolled in Maryland or the District of Columbia. The Competition provides students stimulation, feedback and the opportunity for achievement. There are cash prizes and Edgar Krahn Scholar opportunities, which vary from year to year.
The competition consists of two examinations. Generally, over 2000 students take the Part I examination. Students who score well on the Part I exam are invited to participate in Part II of the Competition (a considerably more challenging exam). The exams require a sound knowledge of high school mathematics up to, but not including, calculus. Both parts require mathematical insight and ingenuity.
The Competition began in 1979 under the leadership of Brit Kirwan, then chair of the Mathematics Department. The first Competition was organized by Professor Gertrude Ehrlich. Over the years, the Competition has been graced by many fine students. For recent years, we have more detailed records:

'Online Math Madness' is designed for high school students, although anyone who wishes can enter. All you need is a computer, a web browser, and an internet connection! We supply the problems and puzzles, you supply the brain power to solve them!
The competition will be an hour and a half, including brief breaks between rounds, during which you will be able to check your standing against other competitors, or just get a cup of coffee to keep you going! The problems will be challenging, but all will be within the scope of a standard high school mathematics curriculum. Exciting Announcement: Online Math Madness is being put on hold temporarily, during the launching of a brand new online competition Quote Puzzler!

SUMMING UP ACHIEVEMENT: Teens plus a math competition equal a fascinating story
March 28, 2004 BY MARTA SALIJ
FREE PRESS BOOKS WRITER If six teenagers have each spent 10 years studying mathematics at a level some math profs can only dream of, and they then try to solve six fiendishly clever math problems over two days, and two of them earn perfect scores, what percentage of them can be considered to be winners? 'Count Down' FOUR STARS
out of 4 stars By Steve Olson Houghton-Mifflin, 256 pages Why, 100 percent, of course, as science writer Steve Olson proves in his highly readable and thought-provoking account of the 2001 International Mathematical Olympiad, "Count Down: Six Kids Vie for Glory at the World's Toughest Math Competition." A math competition? That makes for a good book? Oh math-phobe, trust me, it does, because "Count Down" is only partly about math. It's mostly about motivation, talent and creativity and how they come together to make six unusual kids tick. You could learn something. Even a little math.
