American Math Competitions, North Carolina Results 2003 The results of the annual AMC Examination, administered on Tuesday, February 11, 2003 and Wednesday , February 26, 2003 have been announced. Students in grades 12 and below are eligible to participate. This year, students in grades 6 through 10 had the chance to participate in the AMC10 Contest on the same day as the AMC12. In North Carolina 130 schools and more than 6000 students participated in the competition. The listing below is now official. The American Mathematics Competitions (AMC) began in 1950 with the American High School Mathematics Exam (AHSME). In 1983 the American Invitational Mathematics Exam (AIME) was initiated for students scoring 100 or higher on the AHSME. In 1986, the American Junior High School Mathematics Exam (AJHSME) was introduced. In 2000, the names of the AJHSME and AHSME were changed to AMC8 and AMC12, and U.S. in the International Mathematical Olympiad. * Note: 2964 students from 103 NC schools (71 public and 32 private high schools) participated in the AMC12 in February, 2003. American Mathematics Exams
These four exams (AJHSME, AHSME, AIME, and USAMO) are designed to interest and motivate students in math as well as to challenge better math students. Each of these exams is described below. AJHSME - The American Junior High School Mathematics Examination
This test for middle school students is sponsored by the Mathematics Association of America (MAA) in an effort to strengthen the mathematics capability of America's youth. This is a 40 minute multiple choice exam with 25 questions. AHSME - The American High School Mathematics Examination
This exam covers high school mathematics up to and including calculus. The problems range from easy to extremely difficult. Students have 90 minutes to answer 30 questions.
The exam is open to:
* Any student officially enrolled in high school and taking at least one course
* Students in lower grade levels
* Home school students 18 or younger
Students who score at least 100 points on the AHSME will be invited to take the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME). AIME - The American Invitational Mathematics Examination
This exam is an intermediate exam between the AHSME and the USAMO. Students who score well on the AHSME are invited to take this exam. The exam covers high school math up to and including pre-calculus. Students have 3 hours to answer 15 questions.

Pros and Cons of Math Competitions
by Richard Rusczyk Mathematics competitions such as MATHCOUNTS and the American Mathematics Competitions Beyond encouraging an interest in mathematics, contests help prepare students for competition. For better or worse, much of life is competition , be it for jobs or resources or whatever. Competition of any sort trains students to deal with success and failure, and teaches them that effective performance requires practice. Moreover, nearly every interesting and worthwhile venture in life comes with some element of pressure; competition teaches students how to handle it. Despite all the benefits of math contests, they are not an unmitigated good. First of all, not all contests are designed well calculus the ability to think about and solve complex problems A third potential pitfall, burnout, often comes on the heels of the first two. Participants in math contests are just as much at risk of burnout as musicians or athletes friendship, inspiration, and encouragement

I know there are tests called Pascal, Fermat, etc., but know little about them (grade level, what they are used for, are they national?). I would appreciate any information about those and any other Canadian competitions we could add to our directory. Thank you in advance! COMPETITIONS Indiana College Mathematics Competition This is a competition for teams of size three held every spring at the Indiana Section Meeting of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) . Funding is typically available for registration, transportation, lodging and meals for all participants. In the Spring 2004 competition, UE sent four teams. Team 1 was Nick Armstrong, Brian Cooper and Jeremy Funk. This team tied for 7th out of 42 teams! Other participants included Beth Krofcheck, Mandy Hagerty, Rebekah Musselwhite, Kim Fessel, Jacob Goodman, J.D. McKeel and Matthew Spencer. Past results for UE at the Indiana Mathematics Competition can be found at Indiana Math Competition Results.html University of Evansville Mathematics Competition The Department of Mathematics at the University of Evansville has an annual spring competition sponsored by Kappa Mu Epsilon (National Mathematics Honor Society) open to all UE students. Students are asked challenging yet reasonable questions from a variety of mathematical topics. The first, second, and third place winners receive monetary awards and are guests of Kappa Mu Epsilon at their annual initiation banquet in the spring. Recent winners were: 1st Place Nick Armstrong (Physics) 2nd Place Jeremy Funk (Math and Computer Science) 3rd Place Patrick Blandford (High School Student) Past results for the UE Mathematics Competition can be found at

The $45 prize was a nice bonus, but Bill Owens ’02 and his fellow Macalester math majors do it because it’s fun .
With their teammates and classmates, seniors Bill Owens and Andy Cantrell have done significant work in math competitions and research during their four years at Macalester.
Bill Owens has been enormously successful in math competitions during his time at Macalester. Math competition exams vary in length from a few hours to several days, and usually test technical competence and ingenuity in a variety of math disciplines. Often, students will be asked to cut across disciplines to find solutions.
Owens names the Konhauser Problem Fest as his favorite of the various exams in which he has participated because of the relatively short amount of time it takes to complete:three hours for ten problems.
Owens and his regular teammates, Emilia Simeonova ’02 and Alex Burst ’02 participated this year in the annual math competition between with teams from Macalester, St. Thomas, Carleton, St. Olaf, and Gustavus Adolphus College. Owens’ team placed third of 20 teams, earning Macalester third place in the competition.
The Konhauser is also a favorite because of the cash prizes - Owens’ three-person Macalester team split a forty-five dollar prize for their third-place finish.

All Soviet Union Math Competitions
There are 579 problems in the set. So far I have got up solutions for 1961 thru 1967 and most of 1968 and 1988. Many thanks Vladimir Pertsel who first made the years up to 1987 available on the internet in English many years ago (before the web). His pioneering work has saved me much time. Many thanks also to Arkadii Slinko for providing the years 1988-1992.

1st CIS 1992

As I understand it, the history was as follows. The 1st All Russian Mathematical Olympiad was in 1961. In 1967 it was renamed the All Soviet Union Mathematical Olympiad and the numbering restarted, hence 1st ASU 1967. In 1992 it was renamed again as the Commonwealth of Independent States MO and the numbering restarted. But it was not held again. So 1992 was the last year. The problems were intended for schoolchildren aged 14-17. Each year there were two papers of 3 or 4 questions each at three different levels (according to form, roughly ages, 14, 15, 16), but with some overlap between the levels. I can usually do the the easier questions as fast as I can write down the answer, which is almost never true for modern IMO questions. The hardest questions are comparable to the IMO. The years up to 1987 are apparently published in Russian with solutions in Vasilev N B, Egorov A A, The problems of the All-Soviet-Union mathematical competitions, Moscow, Nauka 1988. ISBN 5020137308. Unfortunately, I have not yet been able to get hold of a copy. However, Vladimir Pertsel published a large text file many years ago on the internet containing an English translation of the problems only. Unfortunately, some of the problems were rather hard to understand and I have substantially changed the wording here.
