Note: the Putnam competition archive has been given its own page. Here is a table of problems from the USA, International and Asian Pacific Mathematical Olympiads, and the USA Team Selection Test in various formats. For more information about these contests, see below This archive is restricted to the most recent examinations. The older exams appear in several books published by the Mathematical Association of America ; check there for more information. What are all these formats, anyway? If you don't know what the acronyms mean, you probably want to make sure that you have installed Adobe Acrobat as either a "plug-in" or a "helper". Then click on the PDF buttons. If you do know what the acronyms mean, Postscript is likely the most useful format. One readily available viewer for such files is GhostScript If you're stuck with a text-based system, you might try reading the TeX files, which are ASCII files with various special characters used to indicate formatting and mathematical symbols. If you insist on trying to process the TeX or DVI files, you'll probably want to consult the FAQ of the newsgroup comp.text.tex

International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO)
Recommended literature , such as Paul Zeitz' The Art and Craft of Problem Solving The International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO, also known as the International Mathematical Olympiad) is an annual mathematics competition for high school students [ IMO Article in Wikipedia ]. It is one - in fact, the oldest - of the International Science Olympiads . The first IMO was held in Romania in 1959. The problems come from various areas of mathematics, such as are included in math curricula at secondary schools. Finding the solutions of these problems, however, requires exceptional mathematical ability and excellent mathematical knowledge on the part of the contestants. Topics covered (see Unwritten Syllabus and Tutorials at Arkadii Slinko's Math Olympiad Website
  • Number Theory, including
    • Fundamental Theorems on Arithmetic
    • Linear and quadratic Diophantine equations, including Pell's equation

Quality Mathematics Problems For High School and Middle School Competitions
One of the great ways to inspire students to learn more about mathematics is to hold competitions in which students compete against students from their own school, or from around the state, or country. Problem solving skills are sharpened, while teamwork is encouraged. The end result is that students think more critically, understand concepts better, and learn to work well together.
Douglas Twitchell, who maintains Virtu Software's Problem Of the Week page, experienced this first hand throughout his elementary, secondary, and college career. Twitchell is a former competitor and award winner in a variety of state and national math competitions. He has won awards and recognition in leagues such as MAML, NEML, ASMA, NEAML, and in college he ranked in the top 150 in the prestigious William Lowell Putnam exam.
In recent years, he has been hired by various mathematics leagues, such as the Maine Association of Math Leagues, the Maine Algebra and Geometry League, and others, to write creative and challenging math problems for middle school and high school mathematics competitions.
Whether it's a regional, state, or school competition, consider hiring Doug to write problems for your math meet. The problems are carefully crafted and written, with diagrams where appropriate, all cleanly formatted for printing. Each problem is proofed to guarrantee both accuracy and clarity. Proofing is done by a high school math teacher and math team coach, and the proofing cost is included.

BOOKS, BOOKS, BOOKS!!!!! Planning to buy some books online? Club Infinity has joined the "associate" programs at both amazon.ca and chapters.indigo.ca . This means that if you follow our links rather than going directly to their websites, Club Infinity gets a cut. Tutors: For most large enrollment first and second year courses, one can go to the Math/Stats Lab, Ross S525. There you can get some help from the Math/Stats Lab staff who are more experienced at mathematics and statistics. If you want or feel that you need more intensive help, hiring a tutor may be necessary. You can find list of known tutors from the Mathematics and Statistics Department, or the list of known tutors from the website of the SOS peer-advising service. Club Infinity is not responsible for services provided by the tutors-for-hire listed on the aforementioned sites and so can not vouch for the quality of the services provided by the tutors. When looking for a tutor talk to them first to get a feel of what type of person they are (i.e., will they be a good tutor) and if they know their stuff with regards to the material in your course(s). You should search for a tutor that will help you understand the concepts that you are dealing with in your courses so that you get more than just help on problems. Mathematical Modeling Competition

T he 51st annual American High School Mathematics Examination (AHSME) will be given on February 15, 2000. The name of the contest has changed, however, to AMC 12. The AMC 12 is a problem solving exam designed to encourage and recognize mathematical ability among high school students. Starting in year 2000, the American Math Competitions will add a fifth contest, the AMC 10 for students in grades 10 and below. The exam has been given nationwide since 1948 and was taken last year by 10,000 students in North Carolina alone. Taking the AHSME is the first step towards competing in the International Math Olympiad, but the exam is intended for average students as well as "superstars".
