Teaching Statement My grandfather was an extraordinary physics and math teacher. When I was a boy, my father told me stories about his father's teaching adventures. He spent thirty years traveling across Asia teaching physics and math to as many people from as many different cultures as he could find. His life was dedicated to sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm for physics, math, and learning, from his time as a YMCA scientific missionary in China to the end of his career as a physics professor at Purdue. The stories about my grandfather and his early exploits in teaching non-traditional students got me interested in becoming such a teacher. His philosophy was that learning is for everyone, no matter their status or background, and that it was a way of enriching people's lives. I came to the General College thirty years ago with the idea of being, for want of a better term, an urban education missionary; the General College fit me perfectly. GC serves students whose motivation is great but whose academic performance in high school was less than stellar. It offers them the opportunity to attend a world class research university where they can learn from some of the best and the brightest people in the country. We are only able to select 850 of the 4,000 people who apply, but we are able to construct an incredibly diverse student population who show great potential and who are ready to learn.

28. Advice For Calculus Students
advice provided by calculus students, at the end of the semester, for future beginning calculus students.
http://www.math.usf.edu/~mccolm/pedagogy/CalcAdvice.html
Advice for Beginning Calculus Students
This is some advice provided by Calculus students I have had, at the end of the semester, for future beginning calculus students.
Prerequisites
For Calculus I, the requirement should be a strong background in mathematics. This course requires that you study about ten to fifteen hours a week outside of class. Work ahead of the professor's lecture and always read the section before you go to class. Never give up, and always try your hardest. Make sure that you're in the right class (don't get stuck in the wrong class). Be prepared! Calculus is a tough course and it helps to have a strong background in precalculus algebra and trigonometry. Be sure to really know those trig functions.
In Class
During class, view the examples seriously, and copy them quickly in detail. Read the section before coming to class, it would help a lot. Ask lots of questions in class. Go to each and every class. If you don't understand something, try reading the book. Learn how to write good notes. Do not depend on your instructor to teach you everything.

AMS e-Math Server
The American Mathematical Society has an extensive set of resources to help you looking for academic positions and is the premier source for information on careers in mathematics. This includes a list of job postings organized by country and state. In addition, you can sign up for an email service whereby you are automatically emailed all new job postings. Finally, you can submit an electronic c.v. which employers can access, and you can register for the job fairs at the annual AMS meetings. Most of these services can be found at the e-Math Employment Information and Services or can be reached indirectly from the AMS's e-Math home page
Other Online Mathematics Jobs Listings
  • SIAM News includes academic job advertisements (follow the "Professional Oppotunities" link). These tend to be more applied than the jobs listed by the AMS.
  • Chronicle of Higher Education has academic and non-academic job ads. Use the searchable index to find mathematics jobs. You do not need to subscribe to the Chronicle to search their job listings.

33. College Classes

This is a page at the University of South Florida . This site is supported by the Department of Mathematics , which is part of the College of Arts and Sciences Taking College Courses These pages were composed and are maintained by Gregory McColm . The opinions expressed on these pages are those of Mr. McColm. Each semester I teach two courses. I have discovered that many students coming into college - or even worse, already in college - do not know how to deal with courses. I have posted a few articles about how courses work and what they are good for and all that sort of thing. They are part `how-to-get-through-college' advice and part editorial opinion. I will be posting more of this kind of stuff in the future, and also revising the postings here, so I am interested in any comments, advice, criticism, etc.: you may mail to me main page . This will simply give concise advice. Then there will be a longer explanatory essay. The newer sections - at the moment, just the homework section - there is a single introductory page (printable in less than two pages) leading to some additional pages. The postings are:

  • feel NERVOUS before a math test? PANIC and freeze while taking math tests? feel HELPLESS doing your homework? think that it's HOPELESS - you just don't get math, never will, so there's no sense even trying?
I read everything, now what? Nervous Nights Stomach-churning head-spinning sleepless nights can be a sign of math anxiety. Try these simple ideas to help you relax and wake up feeling in charge.
1. Study - OK, that sounds dumb. Of course you should study. Check out these study tips . But look at #2... 2. Don't study too much! Spending too much time going over and over the same stuff won't help and will just overwhelm you. 3. Calm those fears by treating yourself with calmness. Try to have a set routine - knowing that you ALWAYS eat oatmeal on test days might just help. Go to bed on time. In the morning, eat breakfast, put on your lucky sweater (really! it works!), and pack yourself a treat for lunch. Back to top Test... Brain... Freeze... Panic

This Web page is devoted to helping students prepare for the Mathematics GRE Subject Test. Note : The GRE subject test in mathematics is completely different from the math section of the General GRE so if you are looking for advice on triangles and circles then this page will NOT help. If you have not already done so, you might want to take a look at the free GRE Test Preparation Materials put out by gre.org) A concise overview of the Mathematics GRE Subject Test and the material it covers can be found on the ETS subject test descriptions page (Note: PhysicsGRE.com is NOT affiliated with the Educational Testing Service or the Graduate Record Examinations) I believe that working large amounts of practice multiple-choice problems is an important part of preparing for the Physics GRE. This same mode of thinking translates directly to the Math GRE Subject Test. Below I list some sources of multiple-choice problems to help you prepare for the GRE subject test in math.
