In magic squares, each row and each column and each diagonal adds up to the same number. But look at the green markings at the top of this page! This special magic square adds up to the same number in all of these ways. (Don't take our word for it! Use your mental math and see for yourself!) It is called a "pan-magic square." We didn't invent this magic square. A famous German artist, Albrecht Dürer, included it in an engraving called "Melancholia" in the year 1514! The most magic thing of all is that you can see the year "1514" in the middle of the bottom row.
Pass your mouse over the square to see what it looked like in the 1514 engraving! Click on the square

    Bilingual Women of NASA
The presence of Hispanics on this continent predates the founding of our Nation, and, as among the first to settle in the New World, Hispanics and their descendants have had a profound and lasting influence on American history, values, and culture. Since the arrival of the earliest Spanish settlers more than 400 years ago, millions of Hispanic men and women have come to the United States from Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba and other Caribbean regions, Central America, South America, and Spain in search of peace, freedom, and a more prosperous future. They brought with them a deep commitment to family and community, a strong work ethic, and an unwavering belief in the American Dream. In order to meet the growing number of Spanish-speaking students in our schools today, the Women of NASA project has a bilingual component. Select Women of NASA profiles will be available in English ( profiles and Spanish ( profiles These bilingual Webchats will accommodate both English- and Spanish-speaking participants. If a question is asked in English, the response will be in English. If a question is asked in Spanish, the response will be in Spanish. As with our other chats, participants are encouraged to research the featured women by reading their profiles either in English or Spanish to form appropriate questions.

Archimedes and the Computation of Pi
Archimedes (approximately 285-212 B.C.) was the most famous ancient Greek mathematician and inventor. He invented the Screw of Archimedes , a device to lift water, and played a major role in the defense of Syracuse against a Roman Siege, inventing many war machines that were so effective that they long delayed the final sacking of the city. For a concise and yet informative discussion of Archimedes see the article "Archimedes" in the macropedia of the Encyclopedia Britannica. Here are some links to other Archimedes related web pages:

    Cut The Knot!
An interactive column using Java applets
by Alex Bogomolny Invitation to MasterMind (tm)
    Don Greenwell
December 1999 Mastermind is a game played by two players, the codemaker and the codebreaker. The game begins with the codemaker selecting a code, a sequence of four colors (digits, pegs or other symbols) (c , c , c , c chosen from a set of six colors (repetitions allowed). The codebreaker will then try to guess the code. After each guess (g , g , g , g , the codemaker responds with two numbers. The first, the number of exact matches, is the number of times c k = g k k = 1, ... , 4 . The second, the number of near matches, is the number of colors in the guess which are the right color, but in the wrong position. In the applet bellow the number of exact matches is indicated by small red dots, while white dots define the second number. In the real game the codemaker uses small pegs for the same purpose. Mastermind is a game of deduction. The task is to uncover 1 secret code selected from a set numbering
