Solid Geometry
I've just noticed that tonight Channel 4 are repeating Solid Geometry . If you like Ian McEwan (and doesn't everyone like Ian McEwan?) then it's well worth watching. It's a brief (40 minutes) adaptation of the short story from First Love, Last Rites It's not an easy story to film (and if you've read it you'll know what I mean) and this production makes some significant changes in order to make it easier. But it's well worth watching. And even more worth reading. As are all of McEwan's books. Posted by Dave Cross at May 25, 2004 09:42 AM Tags: books

Constructive Solid Geometry
Constructive solid geometry systems allow the definition of complex three dimensional objects using a combination of simpler objects. A CSG system normally includes a set of solid shape primitives such as cubes, cylinders, cones, etc. which can be defined in a range of sizes and shapes. These primitives are combined using ``set operations'', or ``boolean operations'', which allow the shape of an object to be described as the intersection of other objects, or as the union of objects. Inverse sets (or subtractions) are used to make holes in the overall shape. The resulting shapes can in turn be joined, or intersected with other shapes, to describe three dimensional shape of any complexity. CSG systems often include facilities for defining new primitives by ``sweeping'' operations, such as those that are used in the generalised cylinder method described in the previous section. Two well known CAD research systems that use CSG methods are GMSolid [ ], and PADL-2 [

"Geometric Elements with Complex and Simple Compounds"
Teachers and students can down load the shareware 3D geometry workbooks. It is shareware in the sense that if the person downloading is 100% satisfied with the workbook, and has come away with a better feel for 3D geometry, then they are asked to remit a fee to the following address: Robert Conroy, 312 East 79th Street, K.C. MO 64114. The suggested fee for each level of workbook, for classroom use, is $8 for Level 1, $10 for Level 2, and $12 for Level 3. The teacher has authorization to print and make as many copies of original, hopefully to 70# paper or card stock, for the use of students in that class. In the case of independent students, the suggested shareware fee would be $1 for Level 1, $2 for Level 2, and $3 for level 3.
To access the shareware workbooks from an ftp site, click on the following appropriate description. You will probably find it easier to print from the gif files located within the zip files at the following ftp sites.

How can I use constructive solid geometry techniques (CSG) to create my 3DWorld?
CSG is a technique for solid modeling. It works by combining volumes occupied by overlapping 3D objects using set operations. It creates a new volume by applying the union, intersection or difference operation to two specified volumes. A CSG application starts with an initial set of 3D objects (Primitives), such as Blocks, Pyramids, Cylinders, Cones, spheres, and closed spline surfaces. The primitives can be provided by the CSG package as menu selections, or the primitives themselves could be formed using sweep methods, spline constructions or other modeling techniques. To create a new 3D shape using CSG methods, we first select two primitives and drag them into position in some region of space. Then we select an operation for combining the volumes of two primitives. Now we have a new object in addition to the primitives that we can use to form other objects. We continue to construct new shapes, using combination of primitives and other objects created at each step until we have the final shape. An object designed with this procedure is represented with a binary tree. Ray casting methods are commonly used to implement CSG operations when objects are described with boundary representations. Game Engines like Genesis3D use CSG techniques to create the world. The significant advantage of CSG is that any complicated shapes can be emulated by using a small set of geometric primitives.
