Thank goodness for CSG
(Constructive Solid Geometry)
Written by Paul Bourke
December 1996 What single object can slide exactly through each of the holes shown below without leaving gaps? That is, the object must slip through each hole filling the hole completely. The solution is the intersection of each of the outlines of the holes extruded along each of the three orthogonal axes in 3 space. This is where CSG based rendering engines come to the rescue, generating this intersection in a facet based modeller would be extremely difficult, it is trivial in a solid modeller.
The following show the three primitives that intersect, a cylinder, a rectangle, and a plus sign. The plus sign is in turn made up of the union of two rectangles. Below is a transparent version of the above in an attempt to illustrate the intersecting volume. And finally the actual intersecting volume. It is circular in along one axis (x), square along another axis (z) and a plus sign along the last axis (y). If you have good woodworking skills and make one of these, probably from wood, please let me know and perhaps send me a copy.

(member feature) After 20 years of active development under a proprietary government license agreement, the BRL-CAD solid modeling suite has just been released as Open Source software. BRL-CAD is one of the many legacies of the late Michael Muuss, author of ping. The package began on the PDP-11 and VAX 11/780before the emergence of ANSI/ISO C language standardsand boasts one of the first parallel Ray tracers in existence. Today BRL-CAD has over 750,000 lines of source code. It incorporates both 3D modeling and rendering capabilities, and supports an API for user-developed geometric analysis applications. It continues to be developed and maintained by the U.S. Army Research Laboratory and its partners. Various portions of the package are distributed under the GPL, LGPL, GFDL, and BSD licenses. BRL-CAD is a powerful constructive solid geometry solid modeling system that includes an interactive geometry editor, ray tracing support for rendering and geometric analysis, network distributed framebuffer support, image and signal-processing tools.

Abstract
A constructive solid geometry approach is adopted for FEM models that mirrors the approach in a CAD package. The topology is first divided into sub-regions using Boolean Geometry. The sub-regions are then mapped into their final shapes and a structured mesh is built. This enables the automatic meshing of all components built by the CAD package. Constructive solid geometry
From DmWiki
Constructive Solid Geometry, or CSG for short, is a technique of creating models by using mathematical operations like addition and subtraction on 3D shapes. For example, one could subtract a cylinder from a box to create a box with a cylindrical hole in it. There are three basic CSG operations:
  • Union (addition): Combines two shapes into one. Does not change the shapes, just allows them to be manipulated as a group, e.g. for more CSG operations. Difference (subtraction): Removes one shape from another, leaving a hole - for example, subtracting a cylinder from a box as mentioned above. Intersection (multiplication): Keeps only those areas where two shapes overlap. For instance, placing two spheres so that they overlap slightly and performing a CSG intersection would leave a lens-shaped object behind.
In graphics based on triangles , as most game engines are, the basic CSG entity is the plane . All other objects can be created by taking the intersection of several planes. For instance, a box is created by the intersection of six planes, each corresponding to one side of the box. Most level editors support basic CSG (at least union and difference, sometimes called 'group' and 'carve'); many do not support intersection.

BEHIND THE NEWS CASE STUDY Mold Craft Switching to a CNC system capable of directly reading solid models from popular CAD systems has cut programming time 50 percent at Mold Craft by eliminating the need to fine-tune part geometry. After importing IGES surfaces into the CAM software used in the past, extensive manual touch-up work was required to fix problem areas. The new CAM system uses the Parasolid solid modeling engine so it can read native solid model geometry from many CAD systems such as the Solid Edge program used at Mold Craft. The ability to import perfect geometry allows programmers to focus on optimizing 3-D machining tool path. The net result, for a typical complicated mold cavity, is a reduction in programming time from five to two and a half days.

Make cylinders and cubes for seating * Here's a new twist on the old beanbag chair idea: the stuffed stool. You can use it as a seat on its own or as an ottoman to accompany an easy chair or a sofa. Our cubes and cylinders have muslin liners that make them sturdy and prevent the stuffing pellets from spilling should the fabric rip or tear. Made from cotton sateen, the bright outer covers can be removed for easy cleaning. Other materials suitable for seat covers are poplin, twill, denim, and any washable upholstery fabric. TIME: About three hours per cube COST: About $32 each, depending on fabric

by Discipline Arts Education Education Reform Foreign Language Literature and Language Arts Mathematics Science Social Studies and History by Grade K - 2 College/Adult A video- and Web-based course for K-8 teachers; 12 half-hour video programs, course guide, and Web site; graduate credit available Learning Math: Geometry, a video- and Web-based course for elementary and middle school teachers, introduces geometric reasoning as a method for problem-solving. In this course, which is organized around the content standards of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), you will explore the properties of geometric figures; make constructions using pencil and paper, and also using dynamic software; and practice using mathematical language to express ideas and justify your reasoning. Some important geometric ideas, such as symmetry, similarity, and trigonometry, will also be examined. You will begin to explore the basis of formal mathematical proofs and solid geometry. The course material progresses from more visual, intuitive ways of solving problems to more formal explorations of geometric ideas, properties, and proofs.
The course consists of 10 approximately two-and-a-half-hour sessions, each with a half hour of video programming, problem-solving activities provided online and in a print guide, and interactive activities and demonstrations on the Web. The 10th session (choose video program 10 or 11 and 12, depending on your grade level) explores ways to apply the concepts of geometry you've learned in your own classroom.

The ingenious and engaging series The Entertainers (BBC2) ended last night, but is clearly a cut-and-come-again cake with great potential. The entertainers were dimming stars, who probably appreciated the attention but did not realise how attentive it would be. It nosed around like an embarrassingly devoted dog. It followed them to work but ignored their act. It explored their underpants with interest. It was always underfoot.
