Polyhedron Interactive geometry software
Download English Version Download Romanian Version Polyhedron is an MS DOS application based on a practical approach to solid geometry. It allows the user perform various actions upon solids as if holding them in hands. Polyhedron simulates a number of tools, such as ruler, protractor, setsquare, compass, bisector, saw, eraser, all accessible from a menu bar. Solids can be revolved, displayed in different manners, cut. Polyhedron is packed with 250 built-in problems. You may be surprised by what some of them deal with. There are problems about frameworks, toys, beetles, other improbable stuff. The problems of complexity 5-6 (there are 6 complexity levels) have proven difficult enough even for the smartest undergraduate students. Polyhedron was built on the carpenter workshop philosophy. You can read more about it here . The note also contains sample problems with resolutions. Geometria is a Java upgrade to Polyhedron Stelian Dumitrascu

9. Euclid's Elements, Introduction

Introduction
New: Jaume Domenech Larraz has translated the Elements into Catalan at http://www.euclides.org/ Euclid's Elements form one of the most beautiful and influential works of science in the history of humankind. Its beauty lies in its logical development of geometry and other branches of mathematics. It has influenced all branches of science but none so much as mathematics and the exact sciences. The Elements have been studied 24 centuries in many languages starting, of course, in the original Greek, then in Arabic, Latin, and many modern languages. I'm creating this version of Euclid's Elements for a couple of reasons. The main one is to rekindle an interest in the Elements, and the web is a great way to do that. Another reason is to show how Java applets can be used to illustrate geometry. That also helps to bring the Elements alive. The text of all 13 Books is complete, and all of the figures are illustrated using the Geometry Applet, even those in the last three books on solid geometry that are three-dimensional. I still have a lot to write in the guide sections and that will keep me busy for quite a while. This edition of Euclid's Elements uses a Java applet called the Geometry Applet to illustrate the diagrams. If you enable Java on your browser, then you'll be able to dynamically change the diagrams. CSG - Constructive Solid Geometry
Boolean Algebra with Solids
Here I want to explain some of the fundamental principals of constructing new and more complex solids by combining primitive shapes. For this we use the technique called 'csg', which allows roughtly speaking the same operations with solids which are custom in boolean algebra - and a little bit more than that. In this case a solid is considered as a special set of points in the three dimensional space. On this set of points we can work with boolean set operations.
csg objects: Such operations may be used with all solids and all shapes which have a clear defined "inside" and "outside". The most important of these are: "box", "sphere", "cylinder", "cone", "torus", "prism". A "plane" must be considered specially: the normal vector points to the "outside" of the plane while any points on the other side of this "plane" are defined as "inside". All csg operations may be combined freely.
The csg operations are in detail: union of sets difference intersection complement opening

CHAPTER 8 : SURFACE AREA AND VOLUME

Figure 8.1 Shown in Figure 8.1 is a brick with length 10 cm, breadth 5 cm and height 4 cm. There cannot be a single plane which can contain the brick. A brick has six surfaces and eight vertices. Each surface has an area which can be calculated. The sum of the areas of all the six surfaces is called the surface area of the brick. Apart from surface area a brick has another measurable property. i.e. the space it occupies. This space occupied by the brick is called its volume . Every three dimensional (3-D) object occupies a finite volume. The 3 -D objects or geometric solids dealt within this chapter are
Apart from defining these objects, methods to calculate their surface area and volume are also incorporated in this chapter.
