The Ribald Reign of King George the Second
George W. Bush's Fuzzy Math
Soon after the Supreme Court decision that led Al Gore to concede the presidential election to George W. Bush, I wrote an article entitled Bush Wins, Bush Loses . In the article, I compared George W. Bush to Daffy Duck for the way that he has been duped into accepting a job so difficult that only an idiot would take it. The whole point of the article is that the difficulty of the political situation and President George Junior's inexperience, inarticulateness and general inability will combine to make him the least remarkable person to inhabit the Oval Office in American History. Well, it's not too surprising that a large number of the Republican faithful disagreed with me. Even less surprising is the fuzzy math that they used to justify their angry responses. Typical is the following, from a Republican who goes by the name of poetwarrior. This GOP guy writes, "I dissent. Well-written but not a very honest diatribe. Remember: half the country voted for this man." Now, I ask you: what's not honest about saying 1st that George W. Bush is not very smart and 2nd that he's got a very difficult job ahead of him? Honesty hurts sometimes.

Fuzzy Math with Salary Calculators:
How These Online Tools Work
By C arl B ialik
From The Wall Street Journal Online There are plenty of free calculators on the Web aimed at helping you compare how much it costs to live in different cities. Unfortunately, with most of them, you get what you pay for. Meant for people who are moving from one city to another and want to plan their financial future, or for bosses who want to adjust the wages of relocated workers, the calculators generally work like this: you enter your current income and sometimes other factors like the size of your family and home and your current and destination cities. In return, you're told how much you'll need to make in your new hometown to maintain the same standard of living. Some go further, telling you how the prices of individual products from cheese to dog food vary between cities. The salary numbers are calculated by estimating what types of things you'll need or want to spend money on in the new city, and this is one of the weaknesses in the estimates. One popular data source used by online calculators assumes that 3.4% of the typical grocery budget goes toward T-bone steaks, and 5.7% goes toward bananas, for instance. (I'd never waste so much of my food budget on fruit.) The calculations are sometimes reported with great precision: An $85,000 annual salary in Atlanta is equivalent to $147,920.04 in San Francisco, according to a calculator on the CNN/Money

Is this what he meant by “fuzzy math?”
President Bush used much of Tuesday night’s State of the Union address to champion his Social Security privatization plan. The President repeated his past claims that by 2042 the system would be "exhausted and bankrupt".
As we have reported in the past, the truth is that the Congressional Budget Office says Social Security can pay out the current full benefit rates until 2052 (2042 if you use the Social Security Administration’s numbers) and 80% of the current rates thereafter. It seems as though we have a bit of a discrepancy.
The hope of privatization supporters is to scare the public, particularly young Americans, into fearing that if something is not drastically changed, our generation will grow old in poverty. Its a lot easier to talk people into giving something up if they don't think they're going to get it in the first place.
That's why we think its so important for you to understand the real financial situation. Anyone who really thinks they are going to get to get nothing out of Social Security is going to get ripped off! The politicians are running a game on you.

Fuzzy math at luncheon
Every engineering group has a different lunch time dynamic. In some groups, it is considered odd if a teammate doesn't join the lunch crowd at exactly noon; in others, it is a free-for-all, with everyone doing their own thing. Also, in large, corporate settings, there is a distinction between people that always eat lunch at the company canteen, those that never step foot in there and those that mix things up. Now with the crowd that experiments with intrepid jaunts into the local restaurant scene, there is one commonality: no matter the level of education of the engineers at the table, regardless how many have degrees in higher mathematics, when the finally check arrives at the end of the meal, splitting it equitably has the potential to become an exercise in frustration. It doesn't happen every time but it happens more often than any respectable practitioner of arithmetic would probably like to admit. Only bean counters at the Congressional Budget Office could take pride in such tomfoolery.

I ran out of an item in a recipe necessitating a quick trip to the nearby tiny market where pricing stickers instead of bar codes are still used but the cash register is programmed to determine the change. I bought a $3.59 item and gave the clerk a $50 bill. He proceeded to pull the change from the drawer and plop it in my hand. He was a young man - the son of the owner who was standing nearby. We attend church together so I wanted to be especially "Christian" like as I asked him to count the money back to me. He was stunned. He didn't have a clue! He started out with the dollar bill so I painstakingly took him through the process starting with the coins. A few days later my fourth grade granddaughter brought homework from her Christian school. She was given three examples of buying a product at the store and the change she'd have to give. It was causing her problems so I helped her and she caught on quickly.

The Spoiler's Fuzzy Math
Nader's Defiance and Evasion Reflect Schizophrenia of a Third-Party Campaign That Was Essentially a Liberal-Democrat Revolt
By MATT WELCH
NewsForChange.com , November 8, 2000 WASHINGTON, D.C. The day after the weirdest election in at least 120 years, the corporate media-bashing third-party candidate who seemed to have tipped the presidency to George W. Bush, suddenly became Tom Brokaw's biggest fan. At his first post-election press conference, Green Party candidate Ralph Nader was asked straight away whether his campaign prevented Al Gore from being elected president Nov. 7. And he refused to say "yes." "I don't think anybody knows. Tom Brokaw said that most of my vote came from non-voters who came in for the first time, young voters, and people who dropped out of voting for many years. There's too many variables right now," he said. "It could have been the Democrats were energized because of this challenge to get out more of their votes." Before the recount in Florida, the state that will decide the election, less than 1,800 votes separated Bush and Gore. Nader received in excess of 92,000.

73. Introduction To Fuzzy Math
fuzzy math differs from conventional math primarily in the area of set theory . However, in fuzzy math the definition of a set is slightly different.
http://library.thinkquest.org/29483/fuzzy_math.shtml
An introduction to fuzzy math
Fuzzy math differs from conventional math primarily in the area of set theory. For example in a conventional AND statement both statements must be true for the statement to be true. However, in fuzzy logic statements are not always true or false, they merely have varying levels of confidence. The table below exibits the differences in how an AND statement is applied in conventional and fuzzy systems. As can clearly be seen the AND statement in a fuzzy system is merely the minimum confidence value of the two values. conventional fuzzy A B A AND B Fuzzy A Fuzzy B A AND B
The OR statement is also different in a fuzzy system as opposed to a conventional system. Once again the table below demonstrates how an OR statement functions in both a conventional and fuzzy system. The table demonstrates that the OR statement returns the maximum value of its two operatives. Thus, the OR is essentially the opposite of the AND statement, under a fuzzy system. conventional fuzzy A B A AND B Fuzzy A Fuzzy B A AND B
The concept of the fuzzy set is also key to many applications of fuzzy logic. A set in conventional mathematics is very simple. A set is merely a collection of numbers or things. However, in fuzzy math the definition of a set is slightly different. A fuzzy set is a list of values, which describes to what degree an object belongs to a variety of characteristics. The fuzzy set listed below is an example of how a variety of temperatures might be classified.

The Bush administration denounced the claim as "flat wrong" and took the unusual step of issuing a statement seeking a correction from the Post. Who's right? The truth is, neither party is wearing the white hat. And all the shouting has left unanswered important questions about the cost of the drug benefit that taxpayers will begin funding next year.

Fool's Gold in Alaska

By Amory B. Lovins and L. Hunter Lovins
Foreign Affairs, July/August 2001 Amory Lovins and Hunter Lovins ("Fool's Gold in Alaska," July/August 2001) claim that drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is bad, unnecessary, and probably uneconomical. Many of their points are wrong, and the decision as to whether to drill in the ANWR should be based on better information. Planning for worldwide supply continuing for decades has been one of the great strengths of the more than trillion-dollar global oil industry. There seems to have been no time or place in which the companies failed to deliver adequate supply; every interruption has been caused by government interference. The search for oil takes place worldwide and has been successful on every continent except Antarctica. Unlike with agricultural commodities, a new crop of which can be grown on the same field next year, oil fields get emptied. New ones must be found even if world use declines. But world use goes up decade after decade, even with an occasional downturn year. Simple arithmetic applied to the figures that Lovins and Lovins offer indicates the following: from 1977 to 1985 world production of oil fell by 6 million barrels per day while production by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries dropped by 13 million barrels per day, so daily non-OPEC production went up 7 million barrels per day, from 30 million in 1977 to 37 million in 1985. These millions of barrels come from new producing areas, including the North Sea, offshore Australia, and the North Slope of Alaska places where previous capital investment finally began paying off.
