http://members.aol.com/kenpresley/HNC.html
(Macintosh screen capture) HyperNetwork CHESS ($25 U.S.) is a Macintosh HyperCard based chess program and chess database that also allows play via modem or AppleTalk network. HyperNetwork CHESS offers four modes of play:
  • Computer mode - you versus the Mac Database mode - enter games for replay and analysis Network/modem mode - play an opponent via modem or AppleTalk Watch mode - allows you to watch an in-progress network game
  • HyperNetwork CHESS displays a very attractive graphic chess board and pieces. It allows point and click movement of pieces with auto-generation of the gamescore notation. Moves can be taken back in any mode. Games can be replayed a move at a time or the entire game can be replayed automatically. Positions can be edited and entire board positions can be transmitted to an opponent. You may play timed chess with on-screen tournament type count-down chess clocks. In computer mode there are 3 levels of difficultly to choose from. You may also watch the computer analyze its move in the movetree window. You may display the legal moves of any or all of your pieces and display the algebraic square names of all squares. HyperNetwork CHESS offers a notes feature that allows for analysis notes to be synchronized with any moves. There is also a message option that allows you to send messages to an opponent.

    Overview of Nilatac
Nilatac is a suicide chess program. It consists of a stand-alone chess engine with a rudimentary interface, and a driver to connect it to chess servers like FICS. The engine uses alpha-beta (with a few optimizations) and proof-number search. It has a decent-sized opening book and complete 4-piece EGTB (endgame tablebases). The driver invokes telnet (or timeseal) and parses the output using regular expressions. Each of these features is documented in the sections below; however, if you are just a FICS user who would like to play Nilatac, you only need to read the next section. NEW: You can browse Nilatac's opening book online here God damn, this is the boringest page I've ever seen! Get me out of here
I'm a FICS user and I'm playing Nilatac. What features does it have?
    • Nilatac accepts draws after 7 reversible moves. Please note the word reversible : 7 moves have to pass without any captures or pawn pushes before Nilatac will accept draws. This is an uncommon feature. Most computers ignore or decline all draw offers, which can be a real nuisance, because you have to keep playing a game that is an obvious draw until the 50 move rule or the 3rd repetition rule take effect.

    How Chess Computers Work
    by Marshall Brain
Table of Contents Introduction to How Chess Computers Work Computers and Chess Three-Level Tree Diagram Lots More Information Compare Prices for Chess Computers If you have ever watched a person first learning to play chess, you know that a human chess player starts with very limited abilities. Once a player understands the basic rules that control each piece, he or she can "play" chess. However, the new player is not very good. Each early defeat comes as something of a surprise "Oh, I didn't think about that!" or "I didn't see that coming!" are common exclamations. The human mind absorbs these experiences, stores away different board configurations, discovers certain tricks and ploys, and generally soaks up the nuances of the game one move at a time. As the level of skill develops, the player will often read books to discover patterns of play used by the best players. Strategies and tactics develop to guide the player through each game. For a human being, therefore, the game of chess involves a great deal of

This is the first article in a six-part series about programming computers to play chess, and by extension other similar strategy games of perfect information. Chess has been described as the Drosophila Melanogaster of artificial intelligence, in the sense that the game has spawned a great deal of successful research (including a match victory against the current world champion and arguably the best player of all time, Gary Kasparov), much like many of the discoveries in genetics over the years have been made by scientists studying the tiny fruit fly. This article series will describe some of the state-of-the-art techniques employed by the most successful programs in the world, including Deep Blue. Note that by the time the series is completed (in October), I will have written a simple implementation of the game in Java, and the source code will be freely available for download on my web site. So if you want to see more code samples, be patient; I'll give you plenty in due time!
