It is frequently stated that NAND gates can implement any logic function. Although this is correct, it does not give the full picture, which is developed here. With simple reasoning and truth tables, the universal Boolean functions are determined. These universal functions are capable of expressing any Boolean function, however complex that function might be. This is couched in terms of Boolean functions and arguments, not in the hardware-oriented terms of gates and inputs, as the facts presented are properties of Boolean algebra, not particular devices. Proofs will be presented for two key statements. These are:
  • All Boolean functions, of any number of arguments, can be expressed in terms of a specific Boolean function of two arguments, provided this is the NAND or the NOR function: no other function will do.

Leibniz initiated the search for a system of symbols with rules of their combination in his De Arte Combinatoria of 1666, as well as developing the binary notation. In 1854, George Boole Professor of Mathematics at Cork from 1849 despite having no first degree, formalised a set of such rules in the seminal work entitled, perhaps optimistically, An Investigation of the Laws of Thought . Boole's aim was to identify the rules of reasoning in a rigorous framework and revolutionised formal logic after thousands of years of little progress. They transformed logic from a philosophical into a mathematical discipline. These rules have subsequently become known as Boolean algebra and the design of all modern binary digital computers has depended on the results of this work. These logical operations, normally implemented as electronic gates , are all that are required to perform more complicated operations such as arithmetic.
    Charles Lutwidge Dodgson
, a Mathematics Lecturer at Christ Church Oxford from 1855 to 1881, was influenced by the work of Boole. He had a general interest in algebra and also teaching. In May 1855 he noted in his diary:

Download them from here: You can also use any other .BMP or .PPM file of about the same size. The .BMP file must be of 24 bit TrueColor, the .PPM one must be of type P6 (24 bit per pixel RGB). There are two ways to use your own files in image demo examples. You can simply call it spheres.bmp or spheres.ppm and put them to the directory where you run the examples, or indicate the name of the file in the command line, for example, image_filters.exe my_image.bmp Screenshot Source Code and Description Executable All examples in one package lion.cpp idea.cpp The polygons for this “idea” were taken from the book "Dynamic HTML in Action" by Eric Schurman. Logic has a long history that goes back to ancient Greece, such as Aristotle's (384-322 BC) logic system based on a simple proposition ``if A then B`` (A B, A implies B, A belongs to B, all B's are A's, or A is a subset of B). Following some simple deduction rule, new statement can be derived from given ones: if and , then . For example, here is Aristotle's famous syllogism:
    • Major premise: All men are mortal. Minor premise: Socrates is a man. Conclusion: Socrates is mortal.
More sophisticated and powerful logic systems were developed in the 19th century. In particular, George Boole (1815-1864) introduced a new logic system, now called Boolean algebra, in his book The Mathematical Analysis of Logic published in 1847. Boolean algebra is more powerful than any logic system prior to his time and can be applied to more complicated problems. Example: Those who graduate from HMC with honors are composed of all female engineers and males in other majors. What can you say about the Engineering graduates in terms of gender and honor? The answer may not be obvious based on intuition or Aristotle's logic. But with Boolean algebra, we can find the answer easily. Same as Euclidean geometry and usual algebra taught in high school, Boolean algebra is also an

    To Guide Entry
    Purpose
The curriculum unit is designed to introduce a unit of simple logic and have students exposed to the area of Boolean algebra and how it can be used as a tool for problem solving. These mathematical ideas have been left out of the curriculum of many high school students. There is a need for mathematics to become more relevant to today’s society. Boolean Algebra with its application to the development of logic circuits will provide some hands on application and to bring to students the importance of technology and the effects it has had on our society.
    Rationale of the unit
The guiding principles of this unit is that any area of mathematics can be presented to students at the high school level and that mathematics should be
    a) relevant to the existing and growing needs of the society
    b) related to the ability of the student
    c) should serve as a motivator to careers that will interest the student
    d) provide the motivation for further inquiry.

The tutorial then addresses the relationship between logic and algebra by translating the truth tables into variable quantities, leading to Boolean Algebra. The main goal for the unit however, is to build circuits from problems.

    Boolean Algebra
Boolean algebra is a system of algebra (named after the mathematician who studied it, George Boole) based on only two numbers, and 1, commonly thought of as ``false'' and ``true.'' Binary numbers and Boolean algebra are natural to use with modern digital computers, which deal with switches and electrical currents which are either on or off. (In fact, binary numbers and Boolean algebra aren't just natural to use with modern digital computers, they are the fundamental basis of modern digital computers.) There are four arithmetic operators in Boolean algebra: NOT, AND, OR, and EXCLUSIVE OR. NOT takes one operand (that is, applies to a single value) and negates it: NOT is 1, and NOT 1 is 0. AND takes two operands, and yields a true value if both of its operands are true: 1 AND 1 is 1, but AND 1 is 0, and AND is 0. OR takes two operands, and yields a true value if either of its operands (or both) are true: OR is 0, but OR 1 is 1, and 1 OR 1 is 1. EXCLUSIVE OR, or XOR, takes two operands, and yields a true value if one of its operands, but not both, is true: XOR is 0, XOR 1 is 1, and 1 XOR 1 is 0.

My June column about Software PALs sparked quite a bit of feedback. I was struck by the number of folks with little understanding of Boolean algebra, the basis for the design of logic circuits. Every design engineer learns Boolean, but it seems few software folks master this important tool. One of my brothers is completing a Ph.D. in philosophy. I was fascinated to learn that Boolean algebra is an important trick used in the defense of philosophical ideas. True - mostly they use a somewhat less formalized version than we do, but the "Rules of Logic" are nothing more than a statement of the truths we bury into algebraic formulation. Isn't it nice that philosophers consider our basic premises, as expressed by Boolean logic, to be the basis of testing truth? Maybe what we do is quite profound and fundamental, after all.

    Boolean algebra
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
In mathematics and computer science Boolean algebras , or Boolean lattices , are algebraic structures which "capture the essence" of the logical operations AND OR and NOT as well as the corresponding set theoretic operations intersection union and complement They are named after George Boole , an English mathematician at University College Cork , who first defined them as part of a system of logic in the mid 19th century . Specifically, Boolean algebra was an attempt to use algebraic techniques to deal with expressions in the propositional calculus . Today, Boolean algebras find many applications in electronic design. They were first applied to switching by Claude Shannon in the 20th century The operators of Boolean algebra may be represented in various ways. Often they are simply written as AND, OR and NOT. In describing circuits, NAND (NOT AND), NOR (NOT OR) and XOR (eXclusive OR) may also be used. Mathematicians often use + for OR and · for AND (since in some ways those operations are analogous to addition and multiplication in other algebraic structures ) and represent NOT by a line drawn above the expression being negated.

This lesson was created as a part of the SMART website and is hosted by the Illinois Institute of Technology The purpose of this web page is to introduce some fundamental Boolean Algebra ideas. These notions are pretty different, so suspend all judgment until you have mastered the basics. Take this stuff on faith. Look up Mr. < a href="http://www.kerryr.net/pioneers/boole.htm"> Boole on the internet for details of his fascinating life and times. The Boolean operations that I shall deal with are and L and or V . There are other symbols for these operations but they are to be avoided. (Confusion lies is their wake.) I want to set up the truth table for and- L and the truth table for or V. A B A L B A V B T T T T F T F T T F F T F F F F The variables in Boolean, here A and B, take only two values. I use T and F, standing for true and false , but others use 1 and 0, red and green, on and off, in and out, etc. The idea is to have two easily distinguishable values. Under A I blink the variable thru its possible values: T, F, T, F. Under B I
