The Leeds Logic Group
The group is one of the largest and most active in Europe, with an international reputation for research in several of the main areas of mathematical logic - computability theory, model theory, set theory and foundations, proof theory, and in applications to algebra, analysis and theoretical computer science. The group has been very successful in obtaining EPSRC and EU support for Research Students and Post-Doctoral Fellows, and has been the focus of extensive international collaboration via various research projects and networks in proof theory, computability theory and model theory. Our past postgraduates and researchers have been very successful in moving to research or teaching positions in Mathematics and Computer Science departments around the world. Further details of individual staff's research interests can be found on their homepages, accessed via the links on the left. Applications to visit or to pursue research within the Leeds Logic Group are always welcome. Please contact Prof. John Truss, who is always willing to give helpful advice, for more information:

Workshop on Numerical Linear Algebra and Applications
August 4-8, 2003
UBC Vancouver, Canada
Overview
This workshop will focus primarily on topics in numerical linear algebra. Topics that are covered include iterative and direct solvers, preconditioning techniques, eigenvalue problems, numerical solution of ill-posed problems, and a variety of related applications. In addition, we will cover areas of scientific computing that are closely related but are not exclusively within the domain of numerical linear algebra, such as numerical solution of elliptic PDEs, PDE constrained optimization, and algebraic multigrid. The meeting will feature two short courses, and a mixture of survey talks and advanced talks. The short courses will be accessible to non-experts who do nevertheless have a solid numerical background. Students and postdocs are encouraged to take part in this workshop, and financial assistance for accommodations (for a limited number of participants) will be provided. Organizer: greif@cs.ubc.ca

    Programme theme
Model theory is a branch of mathematical logic dealing with abstract structures (models), historically with connections to other areas of mathematics. In the past decade, model theory has reached a new maturity, allowing for a strengthening of these connections and striking applications to diophantine geometry, analytic geometry and Lie theory, as well as strong interactions with group theory, representation theory of finite-dimensional algebras, and the study of the p-adics. The main objective of the semester will be to consolidate these advances by providing the required interdisciplinary collaborations. Model theory is traditionally divided into two parts pure and applied. Pure model theory studies abstract properties of first order theories, and derives structure theorems for their models. Applied model theory on the other hand studies concrete algebraic structures from a model-theoretic point of view, and uses results from pure model theory to get a better understanding of the structures in question, of the lattice of definable sets, and of various functorialities and uniformities of definition. By its very nature, applied model theory has strong connections to other branches of mathematics, and its results often have non-model-theoretic implications. A substantial knowledge of algebra, and nowadays of algebraic and analytic geometry, is required.

    Structured Numerical Linear Algebra Problems:
    Algorithms and Applications
    Cortona, Italy, September 19-24, 2004
The workshop, organized by D.A. Bini , is supported by
INDAM, the National Institute of High Mathematics, and by the
MIUR project "Structured matrix analysis: numerical methods and applications"
The aims of the meeting are:
    • to trace the state of the art in the research concerning structured problems in numerical linear algebra and to investigate on the future research lines; to favor the interplay between theoretical and applied research by means of exchange of methodologies and expertises where the emerging applications stimulate and feed theoretical research, and in turn the advanced theoretical tools allow the design of more powerful algorithms for real-life applications.
    Topics of the workshop are:
    • Structured matrix analysis including (but not limited to) Toeplitz, Hankel, Vandermonde, Bezout, banded, semiseparable, Cauchy, Pick, Hessenberg, mosaic, block, multilevel, matrices and the theoretical and applicative problems from which they are originated (structured problems). All kind of applications which involve structured matrices including (but not limited to) interpolation, integral and differential equations, least squares and regularization, polynomial computations, matrix equation, control theory, queueing theory and Markov chains, image and signal processing.

(1) wfox@fmarion.edu; (2) zwest@fmarion. edu. ABSTRACT: Francis Marion University has been teaching college algebra since the school's establishment in the early 1970s. We tried an experiment using applications and projects to motivate the college algebra. Our students had many positive comments about the experience. In this article, we give a few illustrative examples of the applications/projects used and share some student comments. Based on the overall positive experience, two new freshman algebra courses were added using modeling and problem solving as their framework.
