The term sustainability is not limited to one precise definition but is a holistic concept that encompasses economic, ecological, social and environmental strategies. Within the global context of promoting sustainability, all sectors, including higher education, play critical roles. (See http://www.ecy.wa.gov/sustainability/more_defns.htm for more definitions of sustainability, sustainable development, sustainable society, sustainable design.) Questions raised when evaluating the role of higher education in attaining sustainability include:
  • How can universities contribute to achieving the What is the role for higher education institutions in the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2015) Can the Global Higher Education for Sustainability Partnership serve as a model for shaping the practical role of higher education in sustainable development by making sustainability a major focus of teaching, research, operations and outreach at colleges and universities?

On the level of campus planning, there is a strong commitment to infilling while preserving and creating green space. On the level of building planning, the University has made significant commitments to green design and construction. In 1993, the University adopted a set of Design Guidelines to direct all future building on campus. The original design guidlines contained many sustainable development principles, including a commitment to planning for 50 years rather than the industry standard of 20 years. The guidelines are periodically revised and language promoting Leadership in Energy and Environment Design (LEED) and Life Cycle Cost Analysis (LCCA) has been added over the years. This has emphasized longevity in the design process and encourages space to be designed with flexibility for future uses.

It should be no surprise then, that sustainability is increasingly becoming a focus of academic inquiry at Duke, where 28% of the faculty have appointments in more than one department. Interdisciplinary courses engage students while professors and researchers from a broad array of disciplines are combining their efforts to further explore our environment. "Education either functions as an instrument which is used to facilitate integration of the younger generation into the logic of the present system and bring about conformity or it becomes the practice of freedom, the means by which men and women deal critically and creatively with reality and discover how to participate in the transformation of their world." -Paulo Freire Duke Home Executive Vice President Home Email questions or comments about this web site to webmaster Office of the Executive Vice President Duke University • Durham, NC 27708 USA

Primer on Environmental Sustainability I. What is Sustainability?
“Development that meets the needs of present generations without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (Brundtland Report, 1987).
“Sustainability is a possible way of living or being in which individuals, firms, governments, and other institutions act responsibly in taking care of the future as if it belonged to them today, in equitably sharing the ecological resources on which the survival of humans and other species depends, and in assuring that all who live today and in the future will be able to satisfy their needs and human aspirations.” (John Ehrenfeld, MIT).
Sustainability is the “3 E’s”: Environmental Stewardship, Economic Opportunity, and Equality for Social Justice.
“The principles of the ‘sustainable university’ can be summarized as follows: ensuring that the campus operates in an environmentally friendly manner; providing research, technical assistance, and forums for public debates in local communities, states, and—if appropriate—at the national and international levels; revising academic programs so that they prepare students to be ecologically literate citizens, provide faculty with appropriate rewards to develop curricula, and create partnerships with K-12 education to enhance environmental education; and helping to revitalize local communities, businesses, and industries” (Charles S. Clark, “Campuses Move Toward Sustainability,”

Opening the Debate on U.S.-China Nuclear Relations Eric Hagt and Chen Yali, World Security Institute China Program, writes: "China is a rising power, and the paramount task of both China and the United States is to adjust to that impending reality - in terms of economic and trade relations, but also in terms of Taiwan and the two nations' strategic policies. A heavy responsibility falls on China to assure the region and the world that its rise won't constitute a threat to others; that it is a force for stability rather than a revisionist power … On the other hand, the United States must deeply reflect on its own policies toward China, as the latter evolves as a regional and potential world power." Read the report Thinking the Unthinkable: Japanese Nuclear Power and Proliferation in East Asia Frank Barnaby, Nuclear Issues Consultant to Oxford Research Group (ORG), and Shaun Burnie, Coordinator of Greenpeace International nuclear campaigns, write: "'Treat nothing as inevitable' is a good principle to live one's life by. Unfortunately, in the case of Japan's nuclear development, it may not be sufficient. The international community - read governments - will learn to live with Japanese nuclear weapons if that occasion arises. The consequences would of course be terrible for Northeast Asia. Pressure in South Korea to respond would be huge, relations with China could become disastrous, and the global nuclear non-proliferation regime centered around the NPT reduced to a historical footnote."
