Pollution Prevention and Waste Minimization is a fundamental goal for the entire DOE Complex, which includes Pantex. Pantex received DOE's Best in Class Environmental Stewardship Award in 2004 for the Pantex Plant Pollution Prevention Outreach and Public Awareness Programs. This category honors the outstanding achievement of pollution prevention or recycling education, training, or technology transfer by the nominated entity to other DOE employees, contractors, programs or sites. The Pantex Pollution Prevention team was honored for its work to raise awareness among the local community through school presentations and community partnerships. The P2 team gave presentations on recycling to fifth graders throughout the Amarillo Independent School District. One program, The Voyage of the Mimi, focuses on teaching the fifth graders their four R'show to reduce, reuse, recycle, and rebuy. The P2 Team has also established a recycling partnership with the nearby city of Panhandle. Pantex ships waste wood, cardboard, and plastic to Panhandle for recycling. The resulting revenue is then utilized to upgrade the city's recycling capability. This activity has resulted in the recycling of approximately 468,000 lbs of wood, 84,000 lbs of cardboard, and 700 lbs of plastic during fiscal year 2003.

2005 Illinois Governor's Pollution Prevention Awards
The Waste Management and Research Center (WMRC) is no longer accepting applications for the 2005 Governor's Pollution Prevention Awards.
For 19 years, WMRC has presented the Governor's Awards to companies and organizations in Illinois that have demonstrated a commitment to environmental excellence through the practice of pollution prevention. To be considered for an award, projects should meet the description of Pollution Prevention (P2). Pollution prevention is in-process recycling, clean technologies, raw materials substitutions, and/or preventative maintenance. Pollution prevention is not end-of-pipe treatment, off-site recycling, incineration, and/or disposal. Recycling accomplishments should only be considered supplementary material to demonstrate further commitment to environmental practices.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pollution Prevention
Go to FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Pollution prevention is not a new idea, but there is a need for a consistent shift in emphasis towards anticipating and preventing pollution, instead of reacting to it after the fact. Pollution prevention does not stand alone; it is part of an ongoing pollution management approach that is comprised of prevention, control and clean-up. Minimizing or avoiding the creation of pollutants and wastes can be more effective in protecting the environment than treating them, or cleaning them up after they have been created. This approach, called pollution prevention , is needed to secure a safe and healthy environment and a sound and prosperous economy. It is a key component of environmental protection and sustainable development.

On October 25, 1990, Congress passed the Pollution Prevention (P2) Act - a national policy implementing techniques to prevent/reduce pollution at the source prior to its release. The P Act states that: pollution should be prevented or reduced at the source; pollution that cannot be prevented should be recycled in an environmentally safe manner; pollution that cannot be prevented or recycled should be treated in an environmentally safe manner; and disposal or other release into the environment should be employed only as a last resort and should be conducted in an environmentally safe manner. Pollution prevention is defined in the P Act as source reduction. Source reduction is any practice that reduces the amount of a contaminant from entering a waste stream in the first place. Source reduction does not mean altering the characteristics or the volume of the contaminant, i.e., changing it from one form to another. This is because pollution prevention is a multimedia approach to reducing pollution, meaning the effects on water, air, and land must all be considered.

Previous Category Catalog Order Info As illustrated by the major shifts in the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulatory agenda during the past few years, culminating in the passage of the Pollution Prevention Act by Congress in 1990, pollution prevention represents a major cornerstone in the nation's waste management agenda. This law mandates that our environmental policy be based in pollution prevention as its solid foundation. " Pollution prevention is the highest priority strategy under the nations integrated waste management hierarchy that includes: 1) prevention, 2) recycling, 3) treatment and 4) disposal or release. Under the Pollution Prevention Act, congress established a national policy stipulating the following:
  • Pollution should be prevented or reduced at the source whenever feasible.
  • Pollution that cannot be prevented should be recycled in an environmentally safe manner whenever feasible.
  • Pollution that cannot be prevented or recycled should be treated in an environmentally safe manner whenever feasible.
