Socio-Economic Impacts at Sadiola
Proven and probable ore reserves total 49 Mt at a grade of 2.8 g/t gold, which represents some 4.5 Moz of contained gold. Indicated and inferred resources are estimated at 9.6 Mt averaging 3 g/t gold. Mine output will eventually increase to 4 Mt/y, using conventional CIP technology for a production of 386,000 oz/y of gold in the first six years. Mine life is expected to be 14 years, although this could increase if the indicated resources prove economically viable. Production started on schedule and total costs for the project look set to come in under the budget of US$303 million.
Aerial view of the Sadiola gold mine.
Development at Sadiola Hill includes an open pit, a waste dump, tailings dam, gold treatment and recovery plant, offices, workshops and stores, mine staff village, water and sewage treatment plants, airfield, upgraded access road (70 km) and water pipeline service road and a water supply pipeline (56 km) from the Senegal River with boreholes for use during the construction phase. Sadiola lies within the Galam Bambouk gold area which straddles the Mali/Senegal border, near the Guinea border. This region, which is underlain by the Kenieba greenstone belt, has a history of gold-working dating back to the 11th century. The area is relatively sparsely populated by Malinke subsistence farmers who live in small villages. Peul nomadic herders visit the region every year.

ENVIRONMENTAL PAGE Designing and permitting of mineral processing plants around the globe is becoming more complex as environmental legislation is adopted and the push to ban the use of toxic chemicals intensifies. Falcon's involvement has been to examine each ore body from a gravity only point of view before considering other processes. Projects Falcon has been associated with are as follows: Environmental Topics Gravity only plants for recovering gold. Mercury recovery from previously processed material. Acid Mine Drainage and Dump Pre-concentration - Falcon can prevent it and reduce costs! Coal: Remove the sulphides and toxins, and eliminate your environmental impact? Lead recovery from ground matter in shooting ranges Environmentally friendly methods for gold recovery. The above projects use a combination of Falcon SB and C technology to yield the best recoveries and environmental solutions. Please click on the individual topics to get more information.

    Under-Mining Environmental Protection in Ontario?
by Tony Weis Sound confusing? While the thought of a quarry in a conservation area may seem paradoxical, this prospect is the predictable outcome of Ontario's Living Legacy settlement, and has the potential to re-define what environmental protection means throughout the province. As such, environmentalists across Ontario have their attention squarely set on Mellon Lake, which they are viewing with a combination of anger and fear. Located about 30 kilometres north of Napanee, the Mellon Lake Conservation Reserve is a very important natural area. Although relatively small (5,540 hectares), its forests and wetlands are home to a number of rare or significant species, such as the little prickly pear cactus (opuntia fragilis), roughly 1,000 kilometres away from the next closest colony, and the five-lined skink, Ontario's only lizard and a species that has recently been designated as vulnerable.
