2002 TRI Reports For
Idaho Metal Mines
The following charts contain information submitted to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in compliance with the Emergency Planning and Community Right- to-Know Act (also referred to as the Toxic Release Program). This information was submitted to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency by July 1, 2003 and covers calendar year 2002.
Total Reported Amounts
Mining involves the movement of massive quantities of material, usually measured in hundreds of thousands or millions of tons. Mines are developed where the concentration of particular minerals, silver or gold for example, is high. In these areas of high mineralization it is common for other minerals to be found, often in trace amounts. The movement or storage of mined material is defined as a "release to the environment" under EPA's TRI program. Mines are required to identify, measure and report the amount of the minerals that are moved during the mining process. The chart below shows the total amounts reported by Idaho's mining industry for 2002. The charts that follow show the amounts reported for land, water and air.
Total Reported Amounts
(in Pounds)
SUBSTANCE AMOUNT REPORTED % OF TOTAL REPORTED Manganese Arsenic Lead Zinc ... Nitrate Total Manganese, arsenic, lead, zinc, antimony, copper, cadmium and silver are naturally occurring elements found in trace amounts in mined material. Nickel and chromium releases result from the wear of machinery parts used to crush mined material. Nitrate comes from the fertilizer-like material used in blasting at mine sites. MBT is a reagent used to recover minerals from ore.

Environment for Data Mining Solutions The Algorithm Development and Mining System (ADaM) developed by the Information Technology and Systems Center at the University of Alabama in Huntsville is used to apply data mining technologies to remote sensed and other scientific data. The mining system consists of interoperable components that can be linked together in a variety of ways for application to diverse problem domains. ADaM operations can be configured to create customized mining processes. Preprocessing and analysis utilities aid users in applying data mining to problems including translating between data formats. New components can easily be added to make the system adapt to different science problems. ADaM provides a toolkit of pattern recognition, image processing, optimization, and association rule mining capabilities. Using common scripting languages, such as Python Perl data mining and analysis packages The DMSC data mining environment also includes capabilities such as data interchange technology for handling heterogeneous data sets

Environmental Courses within Mining Program
Today, consideration of the environmental impact of mining is an essential part of planning and operating a mine. It is common practise all over the world to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement for any new mine project. This requires a detailed environmental Baseline study of the proposed location of a mine, a complete mine plan which details the potential environmental impacts of the mine, and how the best available technology can be used to mitigate these impacts. In addition, a plan is required which describes the mine closure process and the post-mining use of the land. It is essential for mining engineers to have an adequate understanding of all aspects of this process and to appreciate how to modify a mine design to minimise impact within the economic parameters of the project. The following provides a summary of the courses available in the mining engineering department which relate to the needs of individuals who wish to understand more about the issues, problems, solutions etc to the environmental impacts of mining. It should be mentioned that for those in other fields than mining engineering, who are interested in preparing for a career related to some aspect of mining and its environmental impact, this department offers a variety of technical mining courses which will provide a sufficient understanding of the technical aspects of mining as it relates to a particular individuals needs and aspirations.

Mining environment
With the world population crossing the six billion mark, our prime concern has shifted to carrying out developmental activities with minimal impact to the environment. Mining activity is one developmental activity which goes hand-in-hand with environmental degradation. However, it would be wrong and practically impossible to put an end to the mining industry in the same of environmental concern. The whole idea is more realistic when mining activities are carried out along with reclamation activities so that after the area in mined out it returns as close as possible to its original land cover and local environment. Remote sensing provides an excellent tool to study the mining areas and to monitor the impacts of mining in a short and long term. The environmental effects of mining on all the three environmental amenities viz, land, water and air can be separately monitored. The following photograph/images show

Gold is history's most coveted and celebrated element. For the Pharaohs of Egypt it had mystical status, functioning as the ultimate secular sacred object. The quest for gold propelled Columbus, Pizarro and others into a genocidal frenzy. Today gold mining, a major industry, continues unabated. And more often than not, indigenous people are affected. In the U.S., 70% of mining is on native lands. From Guyana to Kyrgyzstan, widespread use of cyanide is having major negative environmental consequences. And it's not just an overseas problem. In Colorado, one cyanide spill killed a seventeen-mile stretch of the Alamosa River, leaving taxpayers with a $170 million cleanup bill. Danny Kennedy
Danny Kennedy became an environmental activist in his native Australia at the age of twelve when he participated in a movement that stopped the construction of a large dam. He is a founder of Project Underground, the Berkeley-based organization that works with indigenous communities threatened by the mining and oil industries. He is a producer for Australian Public Radio and a member of the Action for Solidarity and Equality in Environment and Development. Home Top of Page Shop Online New Releases ... Contact Us

AMTEX Electronics
has developed a series of solid state 1000VA sine wave voltage inverter that continuously operates using a clever conduction cooling method and is tough enough to withstand the vibrations, dust and moisture common in mine and quarry applications.
The Amtex PSI 1000 Series. The PSI 1000 Series is not only rugged, it embraces a low profile design largely facilitated by encapsulation of internal modules within a thermally conductive MIL-spec silicon rubber compound to ensure against shock, vibration, dust, moisture, humidity, salt and fog. The overall size is 48 x 7.6 x 35.5cm.
Because it is sinusoidal, PSI 1000 can drive just about any equipment, and models within this series of inverters delivers 1000VA sinusoidal voltage at 50Hz, 60Hz or 400Hz.
Conduction cooled, the products have a base plate that is rated to operate within extended temperature ranges.
Essentially, this cooling system operates by touch on another surface. For example, heat can be transferred away through another piece of metal or similar substance.
