Introduction
According to federal and Indiana statutes the term "hazardous waste" means a solid waste, or combination of solid waste that, because of its quantity, concentration, or physical, chemical or infectious characteristics may:
  • cause or significantly contribute to an increase in mortality or an increase in serious irreversible, or incapacitating reversible, illness; or pose a substantial present or potential hazard to human health or the environment when improperly treated, stored, transported, or disposed of, or otherwise managed.
Hazardous wastes come in many forms. They can be liquid, solids, semisolid, or contained gases. They can be manufacturing process byproducts, sludges or spent materials or simply discarded products. Whatever their form, proper management is essential to protect human health and the environment. In 1976 congress passed the

http://www.learner.org/exhibits/garbage/intro.html
If your habits resemble those of average Americans, you generate about 4 pounds of solid trash per day. This adds up to big trouble for the environment. Americans are generating waste products faster than nature can break them down and using up resources faster than they can be replaced. How can we find ways to meet our current economic and social needs without compromising the ability of our children, and our children's children, to do the same? Our success will depend on understanding the difference between
  • Sustainable practices: practices that provide ongoing economic and social benefits without degrading the environment.
  • Unsustainable practices: "quick fixes" that fill an immediate need for resources. Over time, however, these practices deplete or damage natural resources so they cannot be used or enjoyed by future generations.
In this exhibit, you can find out how to improve next year's environmental record. You'll learn how waste is handled now and how some communities are doing it better. In the activities, you can test your knowledge about hazardous waste we generate in our homes and try to shrink a landfill.

Without proper destruction, recycling or disposal, hazardous wastes could be a major source of toxic pollution and a threat to our lives and the natural environment. The Environment Technology Council presents this information to better inform you on the laws, regulations and technology used to protect our land, groundwater and air from environmental harm. EPA Rollback of Hazardous Waste Law
On October 28, 2003, the Environmental Protection Agency issued a new proposed rule that would de-regulate 3 billion pounds of hazardous waste. EPA’s proposal is based on redefining what is a waste under the law. This proposed rule is available at the EPA Web Site at http://www.epa.gov/epaoswer/hazwaste/dsw/abr-rule/abr-rule.pdf The Environmental Technology Council believes this proposed rule fails to ensure the protection of public health and the environment. Click here to see a short presentation on the proposed rules and how you can express your concerns to EPA. Click here to comment on the EPA proposal.

Household Hazardous Waste
Overview Benefits of Proper HHW Management Reduction and recycling of HHW conserves resources and energy that would be expended in the production of more products.
Reuse of hazardous household products can save money and reduce the need for generating hazardous substances.
Proper disposal prevents pollution that could endanger human health and the environment. Leftover household products that contain corrosive, toxic, ignitable, or reactive ingredients are considered to be "household hazardous waste" or "HHW." Products, such as paints, cleaners, oils, batteries, and pesticides, that contain potentially hazardous ingredients require special care when you dispose of them. Improper disposal of household hazardous wastes can include pouring them down the drain, on the ground, into storm sewers, or in some cases putting them out with the trash. The dangers of such disposal methods might not be immediately obvious, but improper disposal of these wastes can pollute the environment and pose a threat to human health. Many communities in the United States offer a variety of options for conveniently and safely managing HHW. For more information on which wastes at home are hazardous refer to the
