When you look in your garage, under your sink, in the basement or shed, do you see lots of old paint cans, jugs of used motor oil and antifreeze, unwanted pesticides, containers of dirty paint thinner, and other unusable household chemicals? If you answered "Yes," you may be ready for a household hazardous waste (HHW) collection. Tennessee has a mobile HHW collection service that goes from county to county every Saturday from mid-March to mid-November. If you are a resident of Knox Hamilton , or Davidson counties, you may take your HHW to one of the permanent collection sites located in your county.

These products may be corrosive, explosive, flammable, a skin or eye irritant, toxic or radioactive. Examples of these products include: paint and decorating supplies, solvents and cleaning products, herbicides and pesticides, lawn care products such as fertilizer, and automotive products. When these products are discarded, they may become hazardous waste; what we call "household hazardous waste." The average American household generates about 20 pounds of household hazardous waste each year. Across Colorado, this equates to over 33,000,000 pounds of household hazardous waste being discarded every year.

615-532-0886 (fax) The mission of the Division of Solid and Hazardous Waste Management is to protect and enhance the public health and environment from existing and future contamination of the land through proper management and remediation of solid and hazardous wastes. Division activities are land-based, regulating both solid waste and hazardous waste through specialized programs and functions. These include landfill permits, hazardous waste permits, state remediation program, used oil management, lead-based paint abatement, special waste, universal waste, and annual waste reporting. More detailed information is available through the links in the sidebar or in the text. The Solid Waste Management Program was implemented in 1971, with the promulgation of the Regulations Governing Solid Waste Processing and Disposal. Facilities that perform solid waste processing activities are registered through a Permit by Rule process. Permits are issued to disposal facilities for handling the following categories of waste:

    Chemicals management
Chemicals are a vital part of our daily life. They provide society with a wide range of benefits, particularly increased agricultural and industrial productivity and improvements in the control of disease. On the other hand chemicals have the potential to cause considerable health and environmental problems throughout their life cycle, from production through to disposal. To ensure that chemicals are managed safely to protect the environment and human health, the Department of the Environment and Heritage:
    • Undertakes environmental assessments of industrial and agricultural chemicals for the National Industrial Chemicals Notification and Assessment Scheme (NICNAS) and the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA); Cooperates in the development of international agreements for restricting the use, production, and emission or release of hazardous chemicals, or for the sharing of information about them; and

Hazardous waste poses particular risks to health and the environment so it is especially important that they are managed properly. Hazardous waste currently forms around 2% of total waste arisings (Waste Strategy 2000).
What is Hazardous Waste?
Hazardous waste is essentially waste that contains hazardous properties that may render it harmful to human health or the Environment. The European Commission has issued a Directive on the controlled management of such waste (91/689/EEC) and hazardous waste is defined on the basis of a list, the European Waste Catalogue , drawn up under that Directive. To help determine if your waste is hazardous or not consult the Environment Agency's guidance document

Consultation Document
Deadline for comments: ( What this consultation is about The Hazardous Waste Directive is one of the oldest EU legislative acts on waste. Its provisions are indispensable for safeguarding a high level of environmental protection; and the differentiation it introduces between hazardous and non hazardous waste is along with the differentiation between recovery and disposal laid down in the Waste Framework Directive a key element of waste management policy. The elaboration of the Strategy on Prevention and Recycling on Waste includes an assessment of existing waste policies. In this regard the Hazardous Waste Directive will undergo a detailed examination. One objective of this review is to improve waste legislation by simplifying it. Therefore the strong connection between the provisions on waste and those exclusively applied to hazardous waste might justify their integration into one Directive. With the intention of preparing a future Commission position on this subject we have formulated the following questions on which we would welcome your comments.

According to Article 5 (2) of Directive 2002/95/EC the Commission is required to consult the relevant stakeholders before amending the annex. The results of this consultation will be forwarded to the Technical Adaptation Committee of the Directive 2002/95/EC and the Commission services will provide an account of the information received. Hazardous Waste
A hazardous waste can take on many forms. It may be a liquid, solid or gas. They all have one thing in common, they have harmful effects on humans and the environment. Hazardous wastes are by-products of many industrial and commercial processes, but they can also be produced in the home.
Hazardous waste management in New Zealand
There is currently no comprehensive or integrated statutory framework covering the management of hazardous waste in New Zealand. Current management of hazardous waste is subject to a complex array of statutes, bylaws and regulations policy documents and waste management plans including the: Resource Management Act 1991, Local Government Act 1974, Health Act 1956 and Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996. Also see the Canterbury Hazardous Waste Management Strategy, Download the Strategy as a pdf file (444k). The Ministry for the Environment's Hazardous Waste Management Programme was established in 1997 to review, and develop proposals to improve, management of hazardous waste in New Zealand. Hazardous Waste Disposal Advice
Hazardous materials can often be identified by certain characteristics that they possess such as being corrosive, flammable, reactive or toxic. Hazardous materials are used at most federal facilities in the Atlantic Region for activities as ordinary as cleaning to highly specialized work with radioactive materials. Most materials are consumed during use. Some hazardous materials, however, may no longer be required, such as laboratory chemicals, some may have reached the end of their lifespan, such as batteries and used oil, and some may have been found to be a health or environmental concern, such as leaded paint and asbestos. These hazardous materials, and sometimes their containers, become waste and must be disposed of safely. Environment Canada has a mandated responsibility to provide advice on hazardous waste disposal to other federal departments and crown agencies. This mandate is set out in The Government Organization Act, Treasury Board Guidelines on Real Property Management, the Fisheries Act and Environment Canada's Toxic Substance Management Policy. However, as soon as the waste leaves the federal property, it is subject to the applicable provincial disposal regulations. These regulations may specify what landfills are licensed to receive particular wastes and what facilities are licensed to handle hazardous wastes.

HOUSEHOLD hazardous wastes
WHAT ARE THEY EXACTLY?
To put it simply, they are the residues of potentially harmful substances you use in your home. Hazardous wastes usually have one or more of the following characteristics; they are:
  • Corrosive: they eat or wear away at many materials
  • Flammable: they easily ignite
  • Reactive: they can cause an explosion or produce deadly vapours
  • Toxic: they are poisonous to humans and animals
Did you know?
One litre of motor oil can contaminate two million litres of drinking water.
Some examples of hazardous wastes you may find around your house:
  • antifreeze
  • batteries
  • brake fluid
  • chemical strippers
  • chlorine bleach
  • contact cement
  • drain cleaners
  • fire extinguishers
  • flea collars and sprays
  • herbicides insect repellent

  • old propane tanks
  • paints pesticides
  • pool chemicals
  • prescription drugs

Hazardous Waste Management Highlights Many households and businesses use hazardous materials in their day to day activities. Many of these activities produce wastes that can injure or even threaten living things. These wastes are called hazardous wastes. Hazardous waste must be handled in special ways to prevent threats to human health and the environment. Paint products, solvents, some batteries, household cleaners and pesticides are typical examples. When disposed of in the municipal landfill or otherwise improperly managed, these materials have the potential of contaminating the ground water our drinking water supply.
