AND GLOBAL ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE
Welcome to the CIESIN Thematic Guide on Human Dimensions Research Programs. In recent years the international scientific community has mobilized to improve understanding of global environmental processes. Governmental, intergovernmental, and non-governmental organizations are developing research programs and working groups to answer the fundamental question, "How does the earth system work?" The human dimensions, or ways that people contribute to and are impacted by global environmental change, are becoming an increasingly important element of major research efforts. Miller and Jacobson (1992) discuss the history, structure, and challenges of this area in "Research on the Human Components of Global Change." Stern, Young, and Druckman (1992) present the United States National Research Council's perspectives and recommendations for U.S. research in Global Environmental Change: Exploring the Human Dimensions . The introduction of the book is available here.

A REPORT FROM THE FIRST NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SCIENCE, POLICY, AND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR IMPROVING THE SCIENTIFIC BASIS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL DECISIONMAKING
GLOBAL ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE Human beings are now making profound changes to the environment on a global scale by altering landscapes, the atmosphere, and the oceans. The science aimed at understanding these changes has grown from research, primarily in the physical sciences, aimed at understanding climate change towards a synthetic global change science that also incorporates ecological and social sciences. Global change science is “focused on the accurate characterization of the vulnerability and resilience of natural and managed ecosystems and human society to global change.” (Our Changing Planet: the FY 2001 U.S. Global Change Research Program). Much of the research in this area is conducted under the auspices of the multi-agency U.S. Global Change Research Program (USGCRP). Because there are major policy implications of this research, new mechanisms are needed to provide “useful scientific products that contribute to the information needs of decisionmakers.” The importance and popularity of this topic led to the formation of two concurrent and independent sections. Each section (A and B) developed its own set of recommendations.

This project aims at knowledge integration combining disasters, migration, crises, and conflicts based on impacts of global environmental change on society. It focuses on linkages between drought, water and food scarcity, public protest and repression. It will contribute to the scientific debate and policy efforts for early-warning, creation and transfer of knowledge to reduce vulnerability and to enhance resilience, by addressing scientists, students, policy-makers and advisers, and humanitarian NGOs.
Part I of this monograph for Springer-Verlag outlines the scientific context and goals, Part II specifies concepts and methods, and Part III assesses research on global environmental and climate change and outlines linkages among research fields. Part IV evaluates global trends on fatal outcomes of global change, and develops hypotheses on linkages among outcomes. Part V examines regional surveys and cases on the outcomes for environmental hot-spots. Part VI assesses strategies for adaptation and mitigation on climate change and disaster reduction. Part VII turns to impacts of global environmental change on disasters, migration and potential conflicts in OECD countries. Part VIII outlines a research agenda, discusses mainstreaming climate change, disaster adaptation with conflict prevention and develops an agenda for implementing this task.

Its main goals were to summarize the understanding of the complex mechanisms of interaction between global environmental change and its impacts on ecosystems and human society in the Central Asia region; to help define a relevant regional agenda focused on global environmental change issues, and identify potential funding sources for future projects; to discuss future directions for global change studies in the Central Asia region and help define priorities; to raise awareness of the APN and ICSU-related global change science programmes (START and its co-sponsors); and to encourage regional networking and international cooperation. Background
Through a series of product-oriented meetings and workshops, this project aims to develop an overarching research strategy for addressing Global Change issues in mountain regions that integrates appropriate activities from both the natural and social science communities. The project will establish the framework in a subset of UNESCO MAB's mountain Biosphere Reserves that represent both developed and developing countries with the explicit goal of implementing the strategy in mountain Biosphere Reserves around the world. Opportunities Objectives 2) To define the consequences of global environmental change for core mountain regions as well as for lowland systems in the buffer zones and transition areas that are dependent on mountain resources (highland-lowland interactions). The emphasis of this objective is to increase our understanding of the consequences of global environmental change for people and ecosystems in core mountain regions and adjacent areas. Credible impact assessments form the baseline for informing policymakers on issues of global environmental changes at local to global levels. In addition, information from impact assessments has direct application to policies and strategies for resource management that are implemented at local and regional scales.

The research unit Sustainability and Global Change is devoted to multi-disciplinary research and education on human-induced environmental change that is either global in nature or pervasive across the world. Our research aims to further the understanding of sustainable development and its constituents environmental quality, economic efficiency and social equity. We seek to cross-fertilise disciplines by building bridges between the natural and social sciences. staff offers courses in the economics of environmental resource management to both students of economics and students of other disciplines. Research and education are organised in a number of cooperative networks The Research unit is financially supported by the Michael Otto Foundation for Environmental Protection , the EU DG Research , the Hamburg Ministry for Science and Research , the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research , the Volkswagen Foundation , the Zeit Foundation and the Max Planck Society Semiannual Reports April 2003-October 2003 October 2002-March 2003

2001—‘Global Environmental Change and the Nation State’
Conference Chair: Frank Biermann
Conference Managers: Klaus Dingwerth, Rainer Brohm et al. The 2001 Berlin Conference, held 7-8 December, launched the now regular series of Berlin Conferences. The meeting focussed on the ways in which global environmental change and the emerging system of global governance has affected the role and sovereignty of the nation state. Participants discussed ways in which the nation state is today constrained through global institutions, and ways in which it has gained importance as the pioneer of new approaches, policies and technologies and as the key agent in the global diffusion of new ideas. The conference also featured case studies on national environmental policies that compared the ‘vertical influence’ of international institutions with the ‘horizontal influence’ of transnational diffusion. The meeting brought together 166 researchers from 28 countries with different perspectives on global change and the nation state, including students of international relations and international law, environmental sociologists and economists, as well as experts on national environmental policy and comparative politics.

International Global Change Institute
The International Global Change Institute (IGCI) is a separate, financially self-supporting, non-profit research and training centre within the University of Waikato. The IGCI focuses on research into managing environmental change at global, regional, and local scales. The Institute promotes linkages to international programmes, institutions, and funding organisations on matters relating to the human dimensions of global environmental change. In so doing, IGCI serves as a centre for co-ordinating and carrying out research and development projects on global change issues; provides professional training and higher degree programmes (MPhil and PhD) focused on the cross-disciplinary issues of global change; provides policy advice to governments and industry with respect to global change issues affecting them; and translates and communicates knowledge of global change issues for policy, planning and action in New Zealand and internationally. In focusing on research innovation for managing environmental change, IGCI develops various methods and tools, such as integrated computer models, integrated community assessment, environmental technology assessments, and policy evaluation. These methods and tools are applied to various research topics, such as climate change, coastal change, sustainable development, health and environment, natural hazards, and environmental governance and planning. Outcomes for environmental sustainability are shared with others through various means, such as projects aimed at training of trainers for capacity building and institutional strengthening in developing countries through the IGCI international network of collaborating organisations.
