The University of Michigan's Global Change Curriculum, part of the Program in the Environment , offers an innovative approach in undergraduate science and social science education. In interdisciplinary, team-taught courses the topic of Global Change from physical and human perspectives are examined, and case studies are used to explore scenarios for sustainability. Complementary small-group sessions are used to promote students' critical thinking and analysis. The courses are aimed at first and second year students who want to understand the historical and modern aspects of Global Change. These 4-credit courses include hands-on sections and carry NS or SS distribution credit. A Minor in Global Change can be completed in the first few years of study, with the three Global Change Courses at its core. Students learn further through the completion of 2 elective, campus-wide courses in bio-, geo- or sociosphere. Read the UM Global Change leaflet

Global Warming
What's the greenhouse effect? Earth's greenhouse effect is a natural phenomenon that helps regulate the temperature of our planet. Simply put, the sun heats the Earth and some of this heat, rather than escaping back to space, is trapped in the atmosphere by clouds and greenhouse gases, such as water vapor and carbon dioxide. If all of these greenhouse gases were to suddenly disappear, our planet would be 60°F colder and uninhabitable.
Is our planet warming? The global temperature record shows an average warming of about 1.1°F over the past century . This warming has been recorded in both the northern and southern hemispheres, and over the oceans, with some areas substantially warmer and others actually cooler. The ten warmest years have occurred since 1983, with seven of them since 1990. Recent evidence shows the 20th century was the warmest in the last 1,000 years. The 1990s were the warmest decade and 1998 was the single warmest year of the past millennium. Are human activities responsible for the warming?

People are being asked to limit activities that change the environment, Scientists study global change to help answer these questions.
http://interactive2.usgs.gov/learningweb/teachers/globalchange.htm
TEXT VERSION
Introduction and Activities
The Earth is constantly changing. Weather and seasons are clear examples of regular changes in the global environment. Other changes are not as evident because they occur over intervals longer than a human lifetime or because the changes are not easily seen. Much of the change takes place on Earth is part of natural cycles. Human activity, however, can also cause environmental changes. The following activities are presented to assist in teaching these concepts of Global Change. Please consult The Teacher's Guide which explains how the activities are related to time, change, cycles, and Earth as home. From there, you can check out the following activities:
  • Time and Cycles
  • Change and Cycles
  • Earth as Home
People are being asked to limit activities that change the environment, but before sensible limits can be adopted, we need information. Questions include:
    • What are current environmental conditions and how are they changing?
    • Are environmental changes caused by natural variation or by human activity, or both?
    • How will local changes affect other parts of the Earth and its systems?

    General information
Contract N° Official commencement date Duration 3 years Coordinator Klaus Butterbach-Bahl The source strength of EU forests for the primarily and secondarily active N-oxides N O and NO is highly uncertain. However, recent investigations have shown that EU forests, due to high rates of atmospheric N-deposition in the last decades, are significant sources for N-oxides. Based on results obtained from field and laboratory experiments on the characterisation of N-oxide fluxes in different forests (e.g. climate, soil, forest type) we will further improve and validate a) a mechanistic model and b) a canopy exchange model for predicting N-trace gas emissions at the soil-atmosphere and canopy-atmosphere interfaces. After combination of both models, we will calculate EU wide inventories of N-oxide emissions from forests with hitherto unknown precision and, using scenarios for future changes in climate and N-deposition, predict future changes in N-oxide emissions.

    Global Climate Change Program: Overview
View of earth from space. USAID places particular emphasis on partnerships with the private sector and on working with local and national authorities, communities, and nongovernmental organizations to create alliances that build on the relative strengths of each. Bringing together a diverse range of stakeholders helps avoid unnecessary duplication and lays the foundation for a sustained, integrated approach. Through training, tools, and other means of capacity building, USAID helps developing and transition countries address climate-related concerns as a part of their development goals.

    Scope
Global warming is a topic on many people's minds right now. From elementary school students to advanced researchers, politicians to business leaders, questions abound regarding what global warming is (or is not), why it is happening (or is not), and what can and should be done about it. This guide is designed to help librarians in public, school, and academic libraries help their patrons find basic information from respected sources. A balance was sought between sites focusing on an introduction to global warming and those aimed specifically at researchers. Most sites have a slant towards policy and research in the United States, while selected references to international materials, especially from the United Nations and Canada, were also included.
    Methods
This guide was inspired by a question to the Internet Public Library from a school student doing a project on global warming. It was difficult to find a coherent guide to resources, especially those for nonscientists and children. The sources in this guide, some of which were used to answer that IPL query, were collected from a variety of web directories and search engines. When searching for information on global warming, it is necessary to use a combination of terms. Children are often introduced to the subject using the term "greenhouse effect." Policy makers often use "global warming." Scientists call the field "climate change science." Sources are often organized in science categories of directories, but may also be found in society. Within science, the field incorporates thought in biology, chemistry, ecology, environmental sciences, mathematical biology, and meteorology, among other disciplines.
