When the global temperature increases - even a little at a time - the climate will eventually change and that can impact people, animals and ecosystems. Little things you do every day may contribute to the problem - the good news is that you can also help solve it! Media attention for the last few weeks has focused on Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath – and rightly so. But we can’t let ourselves forget about the other disaster that continues unabated in Iraq. Since the beginning of September, 14 US troops have been killed, and this week alone, nearly 200 Iraqis lost their lives. Join Global Exchange, United for Peace and Justice, CodePink and thousands of organizations and individuals in a march and rally in Washington, DC on Saturday, Sept. 24 to end the war in Iraq and bring the troops home now. In San Francisco, join us at the International ANSWER march and rally, starting at 11 AM in Dolores Park. Let’s hold the policymakers accountable for this war! learn more

Global change, climate and biodiversity
Forewarned is forearmed - a better understanding of global change problems such as climate, ozone depletion, loss of biodiversity and the disruption of ocean circulation is essential. G lobal change influences policies ranging from renewable energies to transport management, industrial emissions to forestry. This key action will provide a scientific, technological and socio-economic basis for strategies to address issues such as the effects of climate change, desertification and biodiversity loss. It will also form the foundation for European Union policies, and fulfil the EU's obligations stemming from international commitments to sustainable development. Research will be wide-ranging in scope, from ecosystem interactions between land, water, atmosphere and oceans to assessing the impact of human activities on the environment - and the changing environment's future impact on humanity - as well as improving observation and monitoring techniques.

PERSONNEL REPORTS RESEARCH ... CONTACT The Center for Global Change Science CGCS ) at MIT was established in January, 1990, to address long-standing scientific problems that impede our ability to accurately predict changes in the global environment. The CGCS is interdisciplinary , involving both research and education , and builds on the long-established programs in meteorology oceanography hydrology chemistry , and satellite remote sensing carried out in the Schools of Science and Engineering at MIT. In addition, the CGCS , along with the MIT Center for Energy and Environmental Policy Research CEEPR ), is a parent organization of the MIT Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change , which involves significant cross-discipline interaction
The long-term goal of the CGCS is to utilize theory and observations to understand the basic processes and mechanisms controlling the global environment, and thereby to accurately predict environmental changes. Initial objectives involve a sustained program of basic scientific research focused on five fundamental processes in the global climate machine:
  • Convection, Atmospheric Water Vapor, and Cloud Formation

Climate Change Climate change is one of the greatest environmental, social and economic threats facing the planet. During the last century, the Earth's average surface temperature rose by around 0.6°C. Evidence is getting stronger that most of the global warming that has occurred over the last 50 years is attributable to human activities. In its Third Assessment Report, published in 2001, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) projects that global average surface temperatures will rise by a further 1.4 to 5.8°C by the end of this century. This global temperature increase is likely to trigger serious consequences for humanity and other life forms alike, including a rise in sea levels of an estimated 9 to 88 cm by the end of this century, which will endanger coastal areas and small islands, and a greater frequency and severity of extreme weather events. Human activities that contribute to climate change include in particular the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation, both of which cause emissions of carbon dioxide (CO

    ABSTRACT
When one comes into a city to which he is a stranger, he ought to consider its situation, how it lies as to the winds and the rising of the sun; for its influence is not the same whether it lies to the north or to the south, to the rising or to the setting sun. These things one ought to consider most attentively, and concerning the waters which the inhabitants use, whether they be marshy and soft, or hard and running from elevated and rocky situations, and then if saltish and unfit for cooking; and the ground, whether it be naked and deficient in water, or wooded and well-watered, and whether it lies in a hollow, confined situation or is elevated and cold... From these things he must proceed to investigate everything else. For if one knows all these things well, ... he cannot miss knowing, when he comes into a strange city, either the diseases peculiar to the place or the particular nature of the common diseases, or commit mistakes, as is likely to be the case provided one had not previously considered these matters. And in particular, as the season and year advances, he can tell what epidemic disease will attack the city, ... and what each individual will be in danger of experiencing from the change of regimen.
