What You Can Do

Chile's forests may seem to be located 'at the end of the Earth.' They form a biological island in the far reaches of the southern hemisphere, with the Pacific ocean to the west, Antartica to the south, the Andes mountains to the east, and the world's driest place, the Atacama Desert, to the north.
Because of their biological isolation over hundreds of millions of years, Chile's forests include numerous plant and animal species unique to Chile. [more]

Did You Know?
Wild Side ... More Photos Isolated Mountains If you visited these montane rain forests, you would feel as if you were on a mountaintop island surrounded by a sea of lowland forests and clouds. The isolation of the higher reaches of the ecoregion has produced a unique and diverse set of species. Because large tracts of these rain forests have still not been explored, it is likely that many species remain to be discovered. Special Features Located in the center of the island of Borneo, these montane forests are much cooler and moister than those in the lowlands. Rainfall is higher, and many forests also derive moisture from the clouds that envelop the high mountains of this island. Oak, chestnut, and Myrtaceae species can all be found in abundance here. As you move higher, leaves get smaller and trees shorter until the landscape transforms into an alpine meadow. Pitcher plants, rhododendrons, orchids, and moss species are especially diverse high in the mountains.

The world’s tropical rainforests are the richest and most diverse habitats on earth. They represent a vast reservoir of knowledge and contain a wealth of ecosystems and wildlife, with many species yet to be discovered.
Rainforest Concern was established as a registered charity in 1993 to protect the world’s tropical rainforests and the incredible biodiversity they contain, together with the indigenous people who still depend on them for their survival.

Spirits of the Rainforest

Use our free online Teaching Tools to create custom worksheets, puzzles and quizzes on this topic!
Students will understand the following: Scientists are conducting experiments to verify the powers attached to herbs and other plants by native peoples. A reader must evaluate the accuracy and biases of all so-called scientific studies, especially those reported only on the Web. Materials For this lesson, you will need: Access to the Internet Procedures Discuss with students how they would go about using the Internet to find material about new or potential uses of plants as medicines. Where would they begin? By going straight to Web sites hosted by pharmaceutical companies? By doing keyword searches? You may have students proceed to follow their own instincts to locate sites and articles. Or to save time and focus students on the same sources, you may want to refer groups of students to the following three sites screened for this project:

The Amazon Rainforest has long been a symbol of mystery and power, a sacred link between humans and nature. It is also the richest biological incubator on the planet. It supports millions of plant, animal and insect species - a virtual library of chemical invention. In these archives, drugs like quinine, muscle relaxants, steroids and cancer drugs are found. More importantly, are the new drugs still awaiting discovery - drugs for AIDS, cancer, diabetes, arthritis and Alzheimer's. Many secrets and untold treasures await discovery with the medicinal plants used by shamans, healers and the indigenous people of the Rainforest Tribes. So alluring are the mysteries of indigenous medical knowledge that over 100 pharmaceutical companies and even the US government are currently funding projects studying the indigenous plant knowledge and the specific plants used by native shamans and healers.
We hope you will join us and others in supporting rainforest conservation and preservation to stop this tide of destruction. Raising consciousness of the problems is simply not enough. You as a consumer do have power and it can be put to good use. We hope that this website will not only educate you about the problems but show you effective ways in which you as an individual can positively affect your life and health while positively affecting the rainforest.

Thank you for your support!

The Original Official Site of the St. Lucia Tourist Board Natural Attractions of St. Lucia S t. Lucia possesses a topography and ecology of stunning beauty, matched by no other location in the Caribbean. The island's pride in its natural resources is evident in the country's ongoing protection and conservation efforts. In the mountainous interior lies the enormous National Rain Forest, and the island's protected coastal sights include the breathtaking, unforgettable spires of Les Pitons. All sorts of nature hikes, tours, and programs have been developed to showcase these peerless assets, allowing visitors to enjoy the island without harming its complex and fragile environment. St. Lucia's environmental philosophy also extends beyond its shoreline to the protection of its beautiful coral reefs, with their rich and diverse tropical sea life. The government has created four preservation areas, encompassing all of the island's outstanding reefs. Watersports enthusiasts, divers, and boat owners are required to purchase a permit before entering the reserve, and the fees are used for repairs to the reef and preserving threatened marine species.
The Pitons Located near Soufriere, these primeval twin peaks, topping 2,000 feet, are St. Lucia's most famous landmark. Only the most daring climbers have ventured an ascent to their summits, but they can be seen in all their glory from Mt. Gimie or from the decks of a boat offshore.
