Leveraging our latest victory with Boise Cascade Rainforest Action Network and a global movement of grassroots activists and allies are targeting Weyerhaeuser It is no longer acceptable to destroy our environment, and we can not sit back and watch one of the world's largest corporations destroy our last original forests. These forests are the lungs of our planet and home to some of the most beautiful and oldest living ecosystems. Many of these living systems have existed for over seventy million years. Yet, every day from British Columbia to the Amazon, thousands of acres of these natural cathedrals are logged and turned into toilet paper, 2x4s, grocery bags, plywood and legion of other products for human consumption and disposal. RAN's Old Growth Campaign committed to targeting Weyerhaeuser until the company agrees to stop logging the world's endangered forests, and we need you to join us. RAN is part of a growing movement of activists who are applying successful market campaigning strategies against the world's largest corporations, targeting their profit line and disrupting their environmentally destructive business practices until they agree to stop destroying the world's forests. In order to achieve its goal, RAN works with activists, organizations and caring individuals like you, utilizing non-violent direct action, training, education and outreach in order to bring about reform in the boardrooms of the world's largest corporations.

Tropical Broadleaf Evergreen Forest: The Rainforest
Introduction. The tropical rainforest is earth's most complex biome in terms of both structure and species diversity. It occurs under optimal growing conditions: abundant precipitation and year round warmth. There is no annual rhythm to the forest; rather each species has evolved its own flowering and fruiting seasons. Sunlight is a major limiting factor. A variety of strategies have been successful in the struggle to reach light or to adapt to the low intensity of light beneath the canopy. Climate: Vegetation: A vertical stratification of three layer of trees is apparent.. These layers have been identified as A, B, and C layers:
  • A layer: the emergents. Widely spaced trees 100 to 120 feet tall and with umbrella-shaped canopies extend above the general canopy of the forest. Since they must contend with drying winds, they tend to have small leaves and some species are deci duous during the brief dry season.
  • B layer: a closed canopy of 80 foot trees. Light is readily available at the top of this layer, but greatly reduced below it.
  • C layer: a closed canopy of 60 foot trees. There is little air movement in this zone and consequently humidity is constantly high.

Rainforest
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Rainforest on Fatu-Hiva, Marquesas Islands A rainforest is a forested biome with high annual rainfall due to the Intertropical convergence zone . Some cite a minimum normal annual rainfall of 2000 mm (about 100 inches or 200 centimetres), with normal rainfall at least 60 mm during each of the twelve months of the year. Others set the minimum annual rainfall barrier as low as 1700 mm (about 67 inches). The soil can be poor because high rainfall tends to leach out soluble nutrients . This type of biome is found in both temperate and tropical climates . As well as prodigious rainfall, many rainforests are characterised by a high number of resident species and tremendous biodiversity Rain forests are home to two-thirds of all the living animal and plant species on the planet. It has been estimated that many hundreds of millions of new species of plants, insects, and microorganisms are still undiscovered and have no names yet. Tropical rain forests are called the "jewel of the earth", the "Earth's lungs", and the "world's largest pharmacy" because of the large amount of natural medicines discovered there. Despite the growth of flora in a rainforest, the actual quality of the soil is quite poor.

Types of Rainforests T here are two types of rainforests tropical and temperate . Tropical and temperate rainforests share certain characteristics. For example, most trees flare at the base. Vegetation is dense, tall and very green . Both types of rainforests are rich in plant and animal species, although the diversity is greater in the tropical rainforest. Montane forests are found in mountainous areas and may contain plants such as oaks, rhododendrons, and pines, which are characteristic of temperate deciduous forests. At higher altitudes, temperatures are cooler. Even close to the equator, frost and snow can occur. Precipitation and Climate
Both tropical and temperate rainforests are very lush and wet. The tropical rainforest has downpours at the rate of two inches an hour adding up to some 400 inches of rain per year. It rains a lot in the temperate rainforest, too about 100 inches per year. And even more moisture comes from the coastal fog that hovers among the trees. Tropical rainforests are warm and moist; while temperate rainforests are cool.
Tropical Temperate Temperatures warm cool Number of tree species many (hundreds) few (10-20) Types of leaves broadleaf needles Age of trees 50-100 years 500-1000 years Epiphytes lots of different kinds including orchids and bromeliads mostly mosses and ferns Decomposition rate rapid slow

http://www.srl.caltech.edu/personnel/krubal/rainforest/Edit560s6/www/preserve.ht
PRESERVING THE RAINFORESTS The world's rainforests are currently disappearing at a rate of 6000 acres every hour (this is about 4000 football fields per hour). When these forests are cut down, the plants and animals that live in the forests are destroyed, and some species are at risk of being made extinct. Further, as the large-scale harvesting of lumber from the rain forests continues, the balance of the earth's eco-system is disrupted. We need the rain forests to produce oxygen and clean the atmosphere to help us breathe. We also know that the earth's climate can be affected, as well as the water cycle. Rainforests also provide us with many valuable medicinal plants, and may be a source of a cure from some deadly diseases.
logging trucks carry away trees that have been cut down. Forests can be managed effectively without endangering rare species of plants and animals and without risking global environmental damage. Companies that harvest timber should not be allowed to "clear cut" large areas of forest and should be required to plant new trees after they cut old trees down. Governments should create large parks and reserves where hunting and logging are not allowed. As a world community, we must be careful not to destroy the resources that people will need in the future.
Many animals from the rainforests are brought to our country illegally. Parrots and iguanas, for example, are often imported illegally. We should not buy these animals, since that encourages other people to bring in more animals.

Forest Based Sequestration is not an effective strategy for Rain Forests
a reply from Dan to Colin, I read your rant on 3rd April, 2005. . See below for an overview of the conversation. Dear Norbert, Colin was referring specifically to rain forests and rain forests typically cannot be included in this category of forest based sequestration which you described in your post because the environmental impact from logging is much higher than any benefits from logging. What you said about sequestering carbon is only true for forests which are capable of being reforested. A more detailed analysis on forest based sequestration strategies is best explained by the PEW link below. This report was prepared by Robert N. Stavins of Harvard University and Kenneth R. Richards of Indiana University and provides both insightful technical information plus a great economic analysis on the effectiveness of forest based sequestration.
