Generally speaking, environmental monitoring can be defined as checking the state of the environment and studying trends and effects. Our activities should describe the state of the environment in such a way that it can be a useful tool in environmental work. Environmental monitoring is one of several instruments used for follow-up and development. We monitor the environment in order to assess whether the resources that are being utilised to prevent and limit negative environmental impact are having the best possible effect. A prerequisite for this is the use of rational methods of priority allocation which are primarily based on environmental quality goals, dispersion estimates and assessment criteria. These have in turn been developed from previous environmental monitoring data. Environmental monitoring should also act as proof that the environmental work that is being done has a positive effect on the environment. Our activities include long-term studies that are repeated at regular intervals. These studies follow the state, trends, effects and processes in the environment. Environmental monitoring, which is state-financed, works both on a national and a regional level.

Idaho Environmental Monitoring Program (IEMP)
In the late 1940's, the predecessor to the U. S. Department of Energy ( DOE ) selected an isolated U. S. Navy weapons test range in the Upper Snake River Plain of Idaho as the site for a nuclear research facility. The mission of the National Reactor Testing Station (NRTS) was to develop peaceful applications of nuclear energy. On December 20, 1951, the world's first nuclear power plant, Experimental Breeder Reactor I (EBR-I), became fully operational at the NRTS. This facility earned its place in scientific history as the first reactor to generate useable electricity from atomic power. Over the years, more than fifty nuclear reactors were constructed and used at this site which is now known as the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory ( INEEL The predecessor to NOAA 's Air Resources Laboratory ( ARL ) Field Research Division ( FRD ) was created in 1949 to support the NRTS by developing a basic understanding of the meteorology and climatology in this complex terrain setting. The primary focus was placed on protecting the health and safety of workers and nearby residents through the use of meteorological measurements and the development of transport and dispersion models. For example, one of the first studies examined how local meteorology affected iodine deposition and subsequent uptake into the food chain. To that end, a small network of monitoring stations was deployed to acquire meteorological data for the Upper Snake River Plain. Over the years, additional stations were added to this mesonet to enhance understanding of various meteorological regimes.

Geoinformation, monitoring and assessment
Research and Technology Division
An important aspect of environmental and natural resources management is the availability of real (static or dynamic) geo-referenced data and information that describes these resources. Remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS) and agrometeorological and other environmental observations assist in acquiring and processing such data for addressing a variety of key issues related to environment and natural resources management, food production and food security, coastal zone monitoring, desertification, biological diversity, energy and climate change impact. Geo-referenced data from other sources, for example, socio-economic data, can also be combined with such environmental data for more in-depth analyses. Geoinformation, monitoring and assessment includes all aspects of geoinformation data acquisition, analysis and dissemination, such as the activities themselves and the tools and techniques used. Examples of activities are the Africover project and the ARTEMIS environmental monitoring information system. Others are the standardization of geographic data, various software tools such as WinDisp, and the website METART , where near real-time data from the ARTEMIS system can be visualized and analysed. Specific data sets, such as global climatic maps and other agrometeorological and GIS databases, are also made available.

Environmental Monitoring and Control Products The Environmental Monitoring and Control (EMC) devices are stand alone analog ICs that monitor voltages and temperatures. These devices also have the capability to automatically control cooling fans and as a result protect today's high-heat small form factor system designs. As computing power requirements increase, so does heat. With this heat comes the need to safeguard systems from these destructive temperatures. SMSC's EMC devices provide this first line of defense.
