162. ! TAX MEAT !
Argues that America's meatbased diet costs the country billions of dollars in health care costs and environmental destruction, so it's time for an excise tax on meat.
http://www.taxmeat.com
The Health Argument
Eating animal products is harmful to human health. People who eat meat are at least 30 percent more likely to die of a heart attack, 40 percent more likely to get cancer, and at increased risk for many other diseases and illnesses, including stroke, obesity, appendicitis, osteoporosis, arthritis, diabetes, and food poisoning. Additionally, meat contains accumulations of pesticides and other chemicals up to 14 times more concentrated than those found in plant foods.
The Ecological Argument
Today's factory farms use everything but the "moo" and the "cluck"-and in the process they leave behind an environmental toll that generations to come will be forced to pay. Raising animals for food requires more than half the water used in the United States each year and one-third of all raw materials, including fossil fuels. The meat industry is the single greatest polluter of our waterways and is directly responsible for 85 percent of US soil erosion. America's meat addiction is steadily poisoning and depleting our land, water, and air.
The Humane Argument
Human beings aren't the only ones who suffer as a result of America's meat-based diet. 26 billion animals are killed for food every year in this country-more than 4 times the human population of the planet! Because the only federal law protecting farmed animals (which only covers them at the slaughterhouse) is so lax (or in the case of chickens, turkeys, and fish, doesn't exist at all), they suffer from extreme forms of abuse and neglect, from intensive confinement to forced starvation to body mutilations like debeaking, castration and dehorning without painkillers. A tax on meat would encourage people to think twice before supporting blatant cruelty to animals.

Life-Cycle Assessment - LCAccess
Welcome to the National Risk Management Research Laboratory's Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA) web site. This site's purpose is to promote the use of LCA to make more informed decisions through a better understanding of the human health and environmental impacts of products, processes, and activities. The site is divided into six primary areas to help educate people new to the concept of LCA while serving as a focal point for LCA practitioners and decision-makers to stay current with the field of LCA. LCAccess provides information on why one would want to perform an LCA, an overview of LCA, how to find LCI data sources, available LCA resources, on-going efforts in the field of LCA and upcoming LCA events. A matter of great controversy over the last couple of years is the use of genetically engineered foods. Are these really safe ? Will the creation of biodiversities have adverse effects on the health of the consumers ? Can these "bio-tech" foods be the answer to famine ? These are questions that remain unanswered but whatever the future may hold in store for mankind, it is a personal opinion that any foodstuff containing such genetically engineered constituents should be appropriately labelled. The consumer has a right to chose whether he wishes to be a "guinea pig" or not ! INVITATION TO THE INTERNATIONAL

CIVITAS
Citizens for Planetary Health

and other educational materials
Civitas began in the early 1980s as the American branch of CIVIS, Swiss medical historian Hans Ruesch's international anti-vivisection organisation. Civitas published and distributed Mr Ruesch's books in North America. Since then, Civitas has enlarged and has broadened its scope greatly. It steadfastly maintains its commitment to the abolition of vivisection, or animal research. Citizens for Planetary Health represents the growth and expansion of the original, earlier Civitas. "Vivisection Is Scientific Fraud." It always was. It still is. It always will be, as long as it exists. As Civitas progressed rapidly, it didn't take long to learn vivisection is not the only scientific fraud. Other wholesale, wide-scale fraud kills or injures humans and imperils or compromises the global environment in which life exists. Civitas has documented, exposed and proposed reasonable remedies for and solutions to these frauds and their underlying causes. Go there now.

Mercury
Mercury is the only common metal which is liquid at ordinary temperatures. Mercury is sometimes called quicksilver. It rarely occurs free in nature and is found mainly in cinnabar ore (HgS) in Spain and Italy. It is a heavy, silvery-white liquid metal. It is a rather poor conductor of heat if compared with other metals but it is a fair conductor of electricity. It alloys easily with many metals, such as gold, silver, and tin. These alloys are called amalgams. Its ease in amalgamating with gold is used in the recovery of gold from its ores. The most important mercury salts are mercuric chloride HgCl (corrosive sublimate - a violent poison), mercurous chloride Hg

Reaches Another Milestone
U.S. EPA’s Great Lakes National Program Office has determined that benthic macro invertebrates, or the community of organisms that live all or part of their lives at the bottom of streams, have fully recovered in the East Branch of the Black River. This is the first time any waterway on the U.S. side of the Great Lakes has recovered to this degree. Read our feature story to learn more.
