The University of Iowa Center for Health Effects of Environmental Contamination (CHEEC) supports and conducts research to identify, measure and prevent adverse health outcomes related to exposure to environmental toxins. CHEEC organizes and participates in educational and outreach programs, provides environmental health expertise to local, state and federal entities, and serves as a resource to Iowans in the field of environmental health. What's New Summer 2005 Iowa Beach Study The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), The University of Iowa Center for Health Effects of Environmental Contamination, University Hygienic Laboratory, and Departments of Epidemiology, and Occupational and Environmental Health are partnering to study bacterial indicators of water quality and self-reported symptoms of illness. Enrollment of recreational beach users began in June at four beaches. After completing an initial enrollment questionnaire, participates will be asked to log-on to a study website for follow-up questionnaires regarding additional beach outings and any symptoms of illness. Daily bacterial measurements will be taken at study beaches. Over the last four years of sampling by the IDNR Beach Monitoring Program , Iowa'’s state-owned beaches have shown weekly fluctuations in bacteria levels. Overall, beaches met or were below the geometric mean standard for E.coli 94% of the time and met or were below the one-time standard for E.coli 93% of the time. The underlying intent of this pilot study is to develop baseline information on self-reported illness and its relationship to indicator bacteria levels of recreational waters. Information will used to evaluate current programs and develop policy aimed at safeguarding Iowa beaches and public health.
