Environmental Ethics
Environmental ethics is the discipline that studies the moral relationship of human beings to, and also the value and moral status of, the environment and its nonhuman contents. This entry covers: (1) the challenge of environmental ethics to the anthropocentrism (i.e., human-centeredness) embedded in traditional western ethical thinking; (2) the early development of the discipline in the 1960s and 1970s; (3) the connection of deep ecology, feminist environmental ethics, and social ecology to politics; (4) the attempt to apply traditional ethical theories, including consequentialism, deontology, and virtue ethics, to support contemporary environmental concerns; and (5) the focus of environmental literature on wilderness, and possible future developments of the discipline.

Ethics of the Environment
Due to the current debate over U.S. reluctance to approve the Kyoto Accords, which call for developed nations to reduce carbon emissions below pre-1990 levels, and the presidential campaign issue of domestic energy resources, the environment is a live-wire issue once again. Since the 1970s, radical environmental groups like Greenpeace have made headlines with terrorist-style exploits to "protect Mother earth." Meantime, a larger, more mature global movement has been evolving. Universities such as Harvard have inaugurated whole study programs on a relatively recent academic discipline known as environmental ethics.

As the world was waking up to the environmental problems that we were being forced to face, ethically inclined and environmentally aware philosophers began to envision and embrace a confluence of their academic interest with their environmental concern. Since those humble beginnings, environmental ethics has (click any image to enlarge) grown into not only a burgeoning academic discipline but also a field much respected in other academic disciplines and non-academic environmental circles alike. And it all began here at UW-SP. We have designed this program to complement nearly any course of study at UW-SP, especially programs in the College of Natural Resources. Moreover, our program is unique and cutting-edge. No other school in the state, nor as far as we are aware, in the country has such an undergraduate program.

If so, then you will enjoy this book which sees that our environmental crisis is an externalization of the crisis in the evolution of our consciousness. Unless we facilitate the growth of our consciousness beyond its present fixation in techno-rationality we will never resolve the ecocidal trajectory of our contemporary relationship with nature. If there is, in fact, an evolution of consciousness, and this evolution develops in stages, then we cannot expect to establish an optimum relationship to nature by relying on immature stages of perceiving nature, stages that have passed from their fructive, efficient engagement with nature into the senescent cycle inwhich, addicted to means that once worked but are no longer attuned to the reality of nature, we futily and desparately try to bend nature to our outworn assumptions. Many philosophers such as Ken Wilber, Sri Aurobindo, Teilhard de Chardin, Jean Gebser and many others have observed that there is an evolution of consciousness going on and that, moreover, it is speeding up. In this book I work primarily with the theory of the evolution of human consciousness developed by Jean Gebser whose main work is

Brief Description:
This course addresses ethical questions about nature and the natural environment. Is it wrong to cut down trees? If so, why? What about the treatment of non-human animals? Is it wrong to use them for whatever purposes we wish? Pollution. Pesticides. Global Warming. Population control. These are some of the issues that we will address. The approach will be philosophical. As a class we will be looking for answers to these normative ethical issues. The course is co-taught by a professor in philosophy and one in the department of Crop, Soil, and Environmental Science.

http://www.divinity.duke.edu/events/ethics/
An interdisciplinary lecture series presented by Duke Divinity School and The Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Sciences at Duke University Lectures are free and open to the public. Visitor parking is available in the Bryan Center parking deck on Science Drive. For more information, call (919) 660-3448. Environmentalists, philosophers, scientists and theologians have different understandings of the ethics of nature/creation. Interdisciplinary conversation is key to understanding the ecological crisis and the different scholarly narratives of the threats it poses to other than human species, to human communities dwelling on the earth, and to the relationship of humanity to God. Join us for this lecture series focused on the different ways in which the ethics of nature is explored within and between the disciplines of natural science and theological ethics.
