Economics
Economics is the social science that examines the production, distribution and consumption of goods and services, along with the allocation of resources, within society. Since economics often deals with tradeoffs – giving up one thing in order to get another – it is commonly referred to as the dismal science . However, gaining insight into the study of economics can increase both our understanding of, and participation in, the world in which we live by providing tools to help individuals, households, businesses, or governments determine the financial value of something and/or to make choices. Given that economics involves looking at the decision-making process, it can be applied to matters that include a variety of alternatives, even to such things as education, marriage, health, and the environment. The most basic premise which much of economics is based is that of limits or scarcity – that the wants of society will always exceed the resources available, requiring choices and decisions to be made. These decisions include what is produced, how it is produced, how much will be produced, who it will be produced by, and how it will be distributed. The costs associated with producing and distributing good and services, as well as the decisions made by and interaction between buyers and sellers, are key forces that affect the economy as a whole. Alfred Marshall , an influential economist of the 19 th century, published

145. Johns Hopkins University - Department Of Geography And Environmental Science
The department provides opportunities in research and education for undergraduate and graduate students. BS, MS, and Ph.D. degrees are offered. Research foci are atmospheric science, environmental chemistry, biology and economics.
http://engineering.jhu.edu/~dogee/
As our world becomes seemingly ever smaller due to increasing population size and declining natural resources, environmental engineering has emerged as a field of critical importance to society.
Established at Hopkins in 1968, the Department of Geography and Environmental Engineering, DoGEE, has always been concerned with identifying, understanding and describing environmental problems. Our core mission is to improve the human condition through the development and promotion of sound, sustainable environmental practices, and to educate future generations of environmental leaders.

Departmental Research Highlights and News
Senior Design Students and External Consultants
The Department of Geography and Environmental Engineering (DoGEE) will proudly graduate its first four undergraduate students in May 2005. In the Spring semester, these students have been involved in a Senior Design Class where they interacted with external consultants to plan a treatment upgrade for nutrient removal at the Patapsco Wastewater Treatment Plant in Baltimore. The students and external consultants shown in the photograph are Ray Schulte (JMT Engineering), Mitch Buck (DoGEE senior), Rica Enriquez (DoGEE senior), Joel Weitzman (DoGEE senior), Amanda Hughes (DoGEE senior), Sam Grant (City of Baltimore), Bob Wimmer (JMT Engineering), and Pete Thomson (KCI Technologies, Inc.). DoGEE is particularly grateful to the external consultants for their expertise, time and enthusiasm on this project. Faculty organizing the 2005 Senior Design Class were Hedi Alavi, Bill Ball, Edward Bouwer, and Charlie O'Melia.
