Energy, environment, poverty: opportunities for global business
(Proceedings of the symposium held on 15 October 2001 in Tokyo, Japan)

Description Even as certain sectors of its economy are modernizing and successfully competing in the global market, India is challenged by poverty, energy scarcity, and environmental degradation. Japan, on the other hand, has incorporated social sensitivity into its business and technological competence, thus effectively addressing concerns such as poverty alleviation and social justice. This interface of energy, environment, and poverty, if approached through visionary policies, provides an ideal platform for meaningful collaborations between Japanese and Indian organizations. TERI-Japan's inaugural symposium marked an initiative towards fostering closer alliances between institutions in Japan and India. This document contains the symposium's deliberations, emerging from the minds and hearts of very distinguished leaders from both nations. It hopes to catalyse activities and partnerships to add impetus to global efforts towards realizing sustainable development.

International events - Energy and Environment Ministerial Roundtable
Defra home page About Defra The Energy and Environment Ministerial Roundtable will be held over two days - 15-16 March 2005, in London. It will be jointly hosted with the Department of Trade and Industry. This is the first time that Ministers from 20 countries with significant energy needs will be meeting to consider the challenge of creating lower carbon energy systems to combat climate change over the next 50 years. Invitees to the roundtable include all developed countries, plus China, India, Mexico, South Africa, Brazil, Australia, Indonesia, South Korea, Nigeria, Spain, Poland and Iran. The roundtable is not a G8 Presidency event. It is a one-off event which may complement ongoing work currently taking place by the UNFCCC but is not a substitute for it. The texts of the following speakers' keynote speeches will be published here once they become available:
  • Claude Mandil, International Energy Agency

The Role of Physics in Energy and Environment In the past, the extensive use of energy technologies, especially when utilizing fossil energy resources, has also generated undesirable by-products, wastes and pollution that threaten human health, climate and ecosystems. The fundamental laws of physics tell us that there is no technology without wastes, risks and interaction with the environment. Again, physics has been instrumental in our understanding of the adverse impacts of energy production and use ranging from climate change, the interaction of the atmosphere and the oceans to the abatement of pollutants in flue gases.
Objective of the Session
Talking Points of the Roundtable a) World Energy Retrospective and Outlook Finding better ways to meet the energy needs of billions of people in the developing world is critically important. Here we (i) review the historical development of global energy production and use with reference to key contribution of physics, and (ii) provide a glimpse of where the energy system is heading focusing on the key dilemmas, drivers, challenges and opportunities (provided by physics) ahead. b) Energy-Environment Interaction Insults of energy production and use on the environment. Materials are taken by the energy system from and then returned to the environment. Climate change, air quality, regional acidification, etc. and the role of physics in understanding the energy-environment nexus plus what physics can do for abatement and mitigation of the adverse environmental effects.

The clearinghouse facilitates information-sharing and communication about executive orders, policies, statutes, consent orders, and other strategies that fit in the context of integrated energy, environment and transportation approaches. The clearinghouse also showcases specific projects that state and local agencies have used or adopted as examples of this integration effort. By offering this information through a central resource, state and local agencies will be able to more quickly and effectively replicate the results and successes of integrated efforts that have occurred in other states. Paying for Pollution recommends eliminating more than $26 billion in subsidies for polluting and dangerous sources of energy. These subsidies encourage energy sources that pollute our air and water, create nuclear waste and waste taxpayer dollars. Industry groups have made millions of dollars of campaign contributions to preserve these subsidies at the expense of taxpayers and the environment. Paying for Pollution is the product of the Green Scissors Campaign, a coalition of environmental, taxpayer and consumer groups.

There are three main Energy challenges with respect to HUD. First, utility bills can burden the poor and can be a contributing factor in homelessness. Second, HUD programs are affected by energy costs. Finally, energy costs affect economic development. To address these and other issues HUD has adopted the Energy Action Plan.

    Economics: Energy, Environment and Commerce
We have explained what hemp has historically meant to this country's economy. Now, we must also consider the future of hemp. We predict that the net effect of ending American hemp prohibition will be to generate "ripple effect" economics - a revitalized American agriculture producing hemp as the raw material for a multitude of industries creating millions of good jobs for skilled and semi-skilled professional workers thoughout America. The resulting wealth will remain in local communities and with farmers, smaller businesses and entrepreneurs like you! We now ask you to look at. . . The book Solar Gas, Science Digest, Omni magazine, The Alliance for Survival, the Green Party of Germany, the United States and others put the total figure of our energy costs at 80% of the total dollar expense of living for each human being. In validation, 82% of the total value of all issues traded on the New York Stock Exchange and other world stock exchanges, etc., are tied directly to:
