http://www.bbsr.edu/icohh/ecotoxicology/ecotoxicology.html
The Marine Ecotoxicology Group at BBSR, led by faculty scientists Richard Owen, Hank Trapido-Rosenthal, Tony Knap and adjunct faculty scientist Michael Depledge, undertakes research investigating the distribution and impact of contaminants and other bi-products of human activity (for example thermal pollution) within tropical marine ecosystems. This research follows a long history of pollution studies at BBSR in tropical marine ecosystems and now focuses both on identifying new pollutant threats to vulnerable marine organisms such as corals and development of molecular diagnostic tools that give early warning of declining ecosystem health and links to low level contaminant exposure. Much of these techniques are taught within an intensive three week course in marine ecotoxicology held each summer at BBSR. Distribution and impact of contaminants in tropical marine ecosystems
BBSR's analytical chemistry expertise is recognized by the United Nations and other organizations dealing with global contamination. In addition, recent development of molecular biology facilities at BBSR allows the mechanisms of pollutant effects to be investigated in great detail. Not only is this research relevant for understanding how chemicals affect wildlife, but it also permits early detection of threats to human health. Current areas of activity include studies of distribution of new generation antifouling paint biocides in tropical marine environments and their impact on the photosynthesis of coral zooxanthellae (

Section of Soil Fauna and Ecotoxicology
Welcome to the homepage of Section of Soil Fauna and Ecotoxicology, Department of Terrestrial Ecology, National Environmental Research Institute, Denmark. We are dedicated to soil fauna research and therefore shorten our name to SOFAR.
SOFAR has long practical experience within soil ecotoxicology and ecology. We do basic, applied and commercial contract research on soil fauna ecology, ecophysiology and ecotoxicology. Furthermore, we provide an advisory role for national and international authorities within our areas of expertise.
The main aim of the research activities is to describe and understand how different kinds of pollutants, climatic conditions and various methods of farming affect soil living animals and the ecosystems, which they are a part of.
In our laboratories tests and analyses can be performed in accordance with the OECD principles of good laboratory practice (GLP), and our laboratories are accredited for these analyses of the Danish accreditation institute, DANAK. We will be able to provide a full terrestrial test battery needed in autorisations of e.g. pesticides, industrial chemicals and pharmaceuticals. Find out more about SOFAR if you are searching for a strong research partner in  RD projects within the EU framework programmes, you are a student or Post Doc looking for a place for

Ecotoxicology
Ecotoxicology is the study of the harmful effects of chemicals upon ecosystems. In natural environments, living things (plants, animals, and microorganisms) interact in many complicated ways with non-living things (air, water, and soil). Environmental toxicologists trace the movement of chemicals through air, soil, and water and assess the effect of substances, not just on human health, but on individuals, populations, and communities within an ecosystem. Some substances, such as DDT, which do not pose a significant threat to humans, may harm some animals. Other substances are a concern because of their persistence in the environment. Environmental Protection Agency
The EPA conducts ecological risk assessment using these guidelines from the National Center for Environmental Assessment. The federal agency also houses information on persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic (PBT) chemicals including a special section on priority PBTs such as DDT, hexachlorobenzene, PCBs, and dioxin. There are overviews describing what each chemical is, where it can be found, how we are exposed to it, and the potential negative effects it poses. Introduction to Toxicology and Ecotoxicology
The University of Edinburgh gives an overview of ecotoxicity illustrating the discussion with descriptions of how chemical interactions, climatic conditions, and bioaccumulation affect the toxicity of substances in the environment.

The contamination of the environment by toxic substances is linked both to industrialization and to agriculture. Toxic substances find their way into ecosystems from discharges and leaks of industrial products, consumer wastes and urban sewage, from farming and forestry runoff, and from accidental spills. Contaminants may be dispersed over great distances by winds and water currents. Some of these compounds (organochlorines and heavy metals) accumulate in animal tissues, particularly in predators that are at the top of the food chain. Organochlorines pose a serious threat, because it can take decades for them to decompose naturally. See also the publication

Ecotoxicology and Environmental Chemistry
Print
The Ecotoxicology and Environmental Chemistry group is concerned with the impact and fate of chemicals in the environment, and the development of the tools required for environmental risk assessment of chemicals. Hazard or risk assessment of chemicals and wastes includes three major steps: Source characterization, fate in the environment and impact on organisms and populations in ecosystems. Sources are characterised by estimating produced volumes, use patterns of chemicals and emission characteristics of wastes, while research on fate includes both transformation and partitioning processes. Research is performed nationally and internationally in collaboration with universities, research institutes, local and national government agencies, industry, and municipalities. Coordinator: K. Ole Kusk
