Excerpt: "For years the office staff of the Native Village of Tanacross has spent a great deal of time in search of ways of accomplishing environmental and natural resources tasks. Many opportunities arose as a result of these labor intensive searches, but only with much investment of time, and money." Traditional Knowledge in Social-Ecological System
Edited by Carl Floke
Excerpt:
" The special feature of Ecology and Society on Traditional Knowledge in Social–Ecological Systems consists of 11 contributions, covering issues of conservation, ecosystem management, and governance in arctic, temperate, and tropical environments. These articles reflect on the difficulties, but also the potential to be found, in combining knowledge, institutional arrangements, and cultural foundations of traditional and local societies with contemporary society."

The general focus of our research group is to understand the biology and ecology of marine organisms, particularly coastal fishes as models to test hypotheses of basic or applied ecological interest. We work in a variety of ecosystems, including reefs, bays and estuaries, and the rocky intertidal zone. Our interests include the processes and mechanisms that drive the demography of populations and the structure of assemblages. Often we direct our studies towards the early life history stages of fishes, especially concerning recruitment (input of young) to demersal habitats. Explore our website to learn more about us and our projects. Contact us if you are interested in becoming a graduate student in the lab or are an undergraduate at SDSU who would like to become more involved in research.

Until recently, Taiwan has had a spotty record on environmental protection. Changing from a principally agrarian society, Taiwan's industrial revolution saw rapid modernization over the last 50 years, unrivaled by all other countries in Asia except than perhaps Japan. Similarly, rapid population growth, uncontrolled waste dumping, dense motor-vehicles traffic and unplanned urban development have all had a major impact.
The mainstream media and citizens alike have made a growing awareness of the issue and demand a cleanup. The aboriginal groups in Taiwan have also been extremely vocal about toxic waste dumping and the building of nuclear reactors on the offshore islands and have received promises from the government on many fronts. Introduction
Ecology is that science that explores how organisms interact with each other and their environment. For surface life, factors that determine climate will influence the variety of environment types present. A key determinant of climate is the amount of energy available from the primary and the ability of the world to retain some of this input. The properties of the atmospheric gas mix are important in this regard. For example, carbon dioxide and methane are well known "greenhouse" gases, as they limit the amount of infrared radiation reflected into space. The presence of life is critical to maintaining atmospheric composition. The present levels of oxygen in Earth's atmosphere are due to photosynthesis. Life with alternate biochemistries using gaseous reactants will doubtless affect the atmospheres of their worlds in a similar fashion. Local differences in the albedo or surface reflectivity of a planet causes heat gradients to develop in the atmosphere. For example, water (oceans) is less reflective than land which is usually less reflective than clouds.

    Research Profile
The Ramon Science Center conducts long-term research on the ecology and geology of the Makhtesh Ramon and surrounding environment in the central Negev desert. The center is situated in the town of Mizpe Ramon , about 35 kilometers south of the Blaustein Institute for Desert Research in Sede Boqer. Makhtesh Ramon is a large erosion crater some 40 kilometers long and about 8 kilometers wide, surrounded by 400 meter-high natural walls (see above photograph). Initially established as a geological park because of its remarkably diversity of geological structures and habitats, this crater now forms the central part of Israel's largest nature reserve, called the Negev Mountains National Park. Makhtesh Ramon is home to a wide variety of desert animals and plants, some of which are found nowhere else. Of particular ecological interest is the fact that the crater forms a natural boundary between two major biogeographic zones, the steppe (Irano-Turanian) and the true (Saharo-Arabian) desert. As such, the crater forms a remarkable natural laboratory for the study of the ecological interactions of two floras. The faculty of the Ramon Science Center consists of three geologists ( ) and three ecologists ( ). Our geological interests include the geomorphology and geological evolution of the central

    Media Type: Software
Description: Part of microbial ecology is the understanding the dynamics of microbe populations. "'Biota' is a rich system for modeling and simulating population dynamics. It supports the study of multiple species in diverse environments with migration between regions and multiple species interactions. An integrated set of 'field tools' is also provided so that pre-authored models can be used as 'black box' problems for simulated filed studies." ~ by the authors

This is what Lawrence Academy (LA) writes about Winterim:
"Other schools have toyed with programs like Winterim, but LA's commitment to experiential education since the early 1970s is only growing stronger. Both on and off our 100-acre campus in the picturesque town of Groton, students learn to redefine the boundaries of their own education. Pepperell or Peru, Headstart or the homeless, museums or marine biology - there is an astonishing variety of entrées on this menu of exciting opportunities."
To find out more about Winterim in general, click here The March 2003 was such a success that Lawrence Academy returned to Cuba in March 2004. The 2004 study trip is basically the same as the 2003 itinerary, aside from some modification based on the initial experience. See itinerary and program below.

All transport in a private modern air-conditioned bus. The Cuban guide is bilingual and will be with the group throughout the trip. Top-level Canadian-made bike rental and mechanical support in Cuba is included in the itinerary. The bilingual Cuban mechanic is with the group throughout the period of biking.
