has evolved to have an attitude of contempt regarding the
natural world. The writer argues that such an attitude is the
basis for adverse conditions now faced by humanity.

Spring, Robert Gottlieb offers a biased history of American
environmentalism that focuses on the need to change from conservation and preservation of natural resources and wildlands to increased efforts in the direction of a more "grass roots" organization that takes into consideration the humanitarian concerns embedded within the environmental movement. INSTITUTE OF SOIL ECOLOGY
RESEARCH AIMS The overall research goal is the protection of soils in terms of their function as a site for plants and as a formative element of the landscape.
Soils are reactors for transformations of nutrients and pollutants, act as water filters, and can be used as indicators of anthropogenic pollution. Such pollution can result from direct use (e.g. agricultural) or transfer of pollutants from other environmental compartments. Research is focused on
  • soil life and the preservation of site specific biodiversity
  • soil catalysed transformations and their negative impact on other environmental compartments (release of climatically relevant trace gases to the atmosphere, nitrate and pesticide pollution of water)
  • interactions of soil flora and fauna with the physico-chemical soil habitat, and soil stability.
The soil microflora and fauna are active components and potential indicators of soil quality. The research groups use modern molecular biological and serological methods and stable and radioactive isotopes as markers to analyse the transformation of nutrients, the behaviour of pollutants, and the structure and activity of soil microflora and fauna.
Modelling of processes in the soil facilitates understanding of the complex interactions in soils, and enables prognoses to be made of the capacity and resilience of terrestrial ecosystems.

Ecology Division
Western Environment's Ecology Division is dedicated to finding realistic, practical solutions to complicated ecological problems such as endangered species and wetlands. The key to working successfully with regulatory agencies, including the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Army Corps of Engineers, is to identify and address natural resource regulatory issues early on in any project design. Western Environment and Ecology can assist with this process by inspecting and identifying probable environmental conflicts and helping you resolve them. Money spent early in the planning process will usually save you money in the long run.

April The Thomson - ISI Author Relations editors have completed the work of identifying 247 Highly Cited Researchers. We are now preparing the biography portion of their records and will be contacting each of them soon. At least 20 countries and 135 institutions are represented in the list. The researchers in the Ecology/Environment category reflect the diverse components of this complex field of study. Thomson - ISI defines the coverage in the Ecology/Environment category as including journals dealing with pure and applied ecology, ecological modeling and engineering, ecotoxicology, evolutionary ecology, environmental contamination and toxicology, environmental health, monitoring, technology, geology, and management. Other areas covered include soil science and conservation, water resources research and engineering, climate change and biodiversity conservation. Natural history journals are also included in the Ecology/Environment category. Of the scientists listed in this group, 49 are Highly Cited Researchers in at least one other category. Thirty-six researchers are listed both in Ecology/Environment and in Engineering (including Dr. Gedeon Dagan, who was profiled last year in a Community News article), making this the largest group overlap between Ecology/Environment and any other category in ISIHighlyCited.com. This suggests the importance of environmental engineering studies to the literature of each of the "parent" disciplines. The researchers who are highly cited in both categories demonstrate the very breadth of the field; the subjects include water resources, atmospheric chemistry and atmospheric pollutants, environmental modeling, the effects of human activity on the environment, and the amelioration of these effects and other topics.

The site covers the mapping of Scotland's Peatlands and has an overview of Scotland's National Parks Scottish Wildlife Trust Scottish Wildlife Trust is a conservation organisation which manages over 120 wildlife reserves, covering some 22,500 hectares of Scotland's finest landscapes. Top sites are listed and described in the 'See wildlife' section, including major visitor centres at Falls of Clyde (New Lanark), Jupiter (Grangemouth), Loch of the Lowes (Dunkeld) and Montrose Basin. Findhorn Foundation The Trust runs an educational centre and a wide variety of courses in such fields as personal and spiritual growth, gardening, meditation, leadership, community living, and the arts. The Ecological Village Project promotes the use of renewable energy such as Wind Power and Solar Energy. Highland Wildlife Park Lying in the Spey Valley between the Cairngorms and the Monadhliath Mountains, the Highland Wildlife Park was opened in 1972 and presents the amazing variety of animals found in present day Scotland, and then those that roamed hundreds, even thousands of years ago.
