Read the full report GREENING GROWTH AND THE BOTTOM LINE Investing in nature conservation makes economic and business sense. New models of conservation can create and expand markets, sustain profitable enterprise, boost business reputations and build company pride. One way for business to demonstrate its commitment to nature is to engage directly with the conservation community. At the recent 3rd IUCN World Conservation Congress in Bangkok, Thailand, business demonstrated its readiness to take action to shape the future of the environment and development. In this article, IUCN's Senior Economics Advisor, Joshua Bishop, discusses new tools in the conservation arsenal, including certification, socially and environmentally responsible investment, partnerships with business and markets for ecosystem services, and
international economic policy negotiations.

Prior informed choice is essential to a democratic and accountable food system. Therefore, the mandatory, clear, accurate, complete labeling of all products, whether foreign or domestic, derived from, processed with, produced by, containing or consisting of GE organisms should be required.
We need a publicly enforced and fully transparent government system to assess the socioeconomic, environmental and human health impacts of genetic engineering that conforms to rigorous scientific standards, requires a demonstration of a reasonable certainty of no harm, shifts the burden of proof and cost to the manufacturer and permanently codifies the Precautionary Principle.

Declaration of Interdependence - David Suzuki
Summary: David Suzuki's Declaration of Interdependence gives voice to the crucial facts on which the environment movement is based. Date: 23 January 1998 This We Know We are the earth, through the plants and animals that nourish us. We are the rains and the oceans that flow through our veins. We are the breath of the forests of the land and the plants of the sea. We are human animals, related to all other life as descendants of the firstborn cell. We share a common present, filled with uncertainty. And we share a common future as yet untold. We humans are but one of 30 million species weaving the thin layer of life enveloping the world. The stability of communities of living things depends on this diversity. Linked in that web, we are interconnected - using, cleansing. sharing and replenishing the fundamental elements of life. Our home, planet Earth, is finite; all life shares its resources and the energy from the sun and therefore has limits to growth. For the first time, we have touched those limits.

Biodiversity
Biodiversity is a term used to describe the biological diversity or variety of life: the different plants, animals and microorganisms, the genes they contain, and the ecosystems they form. Biodiversity is usually considered at three levels: genetic diversity, species diversity and ecosystem diversity. Genetic diversity refers to the variation of genes within species; that is, the genetic information contained in all the individual plants, animals and microorganisms. New genetic variation is produced in populations of organisms that can reproduce sexually by recombination (the rearrangement of genes that results in offspring having a combination of characteristics different from those of their parents), and in individuals by gene and chromosome mutations. The pool of genetic variation is shaped by selection. Selection leads to certain genetic attributes being preferred and results in changes to the frequency of these genes within this gene pool.

The Natural Environment and Biodiversity Biodiversity is the variety of life on earth. In Kingston, it ranges across a wide variety of species and environment from sparrows, dandelions, woodland, rivers, grassland to human beings. Biodiversity makes the environment in which we live a more interesting, lively and healthy space. The Council manages about 100 hectares of land with the conservation of biodiversity in mind. The best way to ensure the survival of the plants and animals which live there is to protect their habitats. We do this by declaring the site a Local Nature Reserve (LNR). The Council has prepared a Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) with local community involvement and partnership. The plan identifies habitats and species that are important in the brough and sets targets to maintain and enhance them.

    Biodiversity
Camouflaged by its rocky surroundings, this
leopard in Namibia is among the thousands of
animals worldwide that are threatened with
extinction. This fantastic variety of life is found in diverse habitats ranging from the hottest desert to tropical rainforests to the arctic tundra. Biodiversity is essential to every aspect of the way that humans live around the world. Plants and animals provide people with food and medicine, trees play an important role in absorbing greenhouse gases and cleaning the air we breathe, and rivers and watersheds provide the clean water that we drink.
In recognition of the importance of biodiversity, USAID has made biodiversity conservation a key goal under its program to protect the environment. USAID is supporting conservation activities in 64 countries, seeking to maintain the variety of species and the ecosystems in which they occur.
USAID is working with communities, non-governmental organizations, and governments to develop environmental policies and management practices that conserve biodiversity and, at the same time, sustain local livelihoods. This can involve empowering communities to become stronger actors in the management of resources. USAID also invests in building the capacity of foreign governments, non-governmental organizations, and communities to better manage protected areas. In addition, USAID is promoting enterprise-based conservation initiatives (such as eco-tourism), which provide economic benefits from the preservation of biological resources. To complement these activities, USAID fosters greater public awareness of conservation issues by supporting the development of outreach and environmental education programs.
