Air quality
New Zealand has relatively good air quality due to our low population density, close proximity to the sea, and remoteness from other continents and sources of pollution. However, there are some areas (mostly urban) where concentrations of air pollution are quite high, especially during low wind conditions where there is high traffic density and where home heating is mainly by open fires or wood burners. The Ministry recognises the importance of keeping the air clean and healthy to breathe. This section of the site provides information on our work on air quality and the effects of air pollution:

Report on Georgia's Environment
Georgia's Environment Decades of Change Prepared in consideration of EPD's 30th anniversary, "Georgia's Environment: Decades of Change" summarizes factors that have affected Georgia's environment and influenced EPD's growth and development during the last three decades, as well as current environmental issues and challenges. It also includes a series of tables that present a retrospective overview of changes to Georgia's environment; and the laws, regulations and programs designed to protect it. [Revised May 2002] Georgia's Environment This report presents a snapshot of the health of Georgia's environment and the programs designed to protect it. "Georgia's Environment" also provides references for additional information and summaries of some of the environmental outreach, education, and partnership programs in which EPD is involved.
Air Quality
Georgia's Clean Air Force In Georgia, mobile sources, like cars and light trucks, are one of the top contributors to our ozone problem. Metro Atlanta's emission testing program is the result of the Federal Clean Air Act, which was enacted by the U.S. Congress and supported by the Georgia General Assembly. Many other cities around the country are enacting similar programs, as a result of the same legislation. The goal of the program is simple: identify the vehicles that are the heavy polluters, and have them fixed. So there can be a cleaner, healthier environment for you, your children and their children.

Health Concerns
So What DO We Know?
After receiving several hundred complaints about possible carpet-related health effects, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) commissioned a study by Hodgson and others at LBL of chemical emissions from carpets. Dozens of chemicals released from carpets were observed and 31 were positively identified. Emission levels of these chemicals were then compared to existing data about their health effects. As the measured emissions were considered peak values to which people would be exposed for only a few hours or days, they were compared only to known short-term health effects. No attempt was made to assess the possible effect of chronic or long-term exposure. As measured, none of the chemicals approached levels known to be hazardous upon short-term exposure. Of the chemicals released, most notable are styrene and 4-PC, both of which come from the SB latex backing that is used on 95% of carpets. Styrene is a known toxin and suspected carcinogen. 4-PC has not been shown to be toxic, but it has a detectable odor even at levels below one part per billion and is the chemical most responsible for the distinctive smell associated with new carpets. It is also less volatile than many of the other chemicals measured, so it continues to be emitted at measurable levels for a longer time.

Monitoring at Port Pirie has been ongoing for over twelve months and will continue in 2004. All other stations are permanent. The site at Port Noarlunga is to be constructed in 2004. The data used to compile the EPA Air Quality Index comes directly from EPA's air monitoring stations and is unchecked. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
The Agency's mission is to control and abate pollution in the areas of air, water, solid waste, pesticides, radiation, and toxic substances. The EPA regulates air pollution under the Clean Air Act legislation.
  • Office of Air and Radiation

  • Develops national programs, technical policies, and regulations for air pollution control. Areas of concern to OAR include: indoor and outdoor air quality, stationary and mobile sources of air pollution, air toxics, radon, acid rain, stratospheric ozone depletion, and pollution prevention.
  • Envirofacts Warehouse

  • Provides access to data from major EPA programs, including Aerometric Information Retrieval System (AIRS)/AIRS Facility Subsystem (AFS), emissions and compliance data on air pollution point sources, and the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI), which contains information about releases and transfers of more than 650 toxic chemicals and compounds to the environment.
  • AirsData

  • Provides access to access to air pollution data for the entire United States. Data includes information on major point sources of air pollution, annual summaries of air pollution measurements at individual monitoring stations, maps with the location of major point sources of pollution, monitoring sites, and areas of the country where air pollution levels exceed health-based EPA standards. Includes names, addresses, and phone numbers of people in EPA and state environmental agencies to contact about air pollution data.

110. Agriculture And The Environment - Air: Air Quality
Agriculture and the environment air air quality.
http://www.agr.gc.ca/policy/environment/air_01_e.phtml

Issue
Agricultural practices can potentially affect air quality through the emission of nitrogen compounds, particulate matter, and other substances.
Background
Agricultural emissions of nitrogen compounds may have negative effects on ecosystems. Nitrogen compounds emitted from agricultural sources can impact air quality, the most significant of which are ammonia (NH ), primarily from fertilizers and livestock, and nitrogen oxides (NOx) from fuel combustion in farm equipment. In fact, the draft Canadian National Inventory of Ammonia Emissions shows that agricultural activities are the primary source of ammonia in the air. Quantities of ammonia from agricultural sources:
  • increased by an estimated 2.5 times, mainly due to increases associated with livestock, between 1980 and 1995; and represented 95% of all ammonia emissions from human sources and 56% of total emissions, human and natural, estimated for 1995.
Smog
Some agricultural activities also play a large role in the formation of smog - a noxious mixture of air pollutants that can often be seen as a haze in the air. The two main components of smog are airborne particulate matter and ground-level ozone. Airborne particulate matter consists of microscopic material in the air. These tiny particles, capable of being inhaled by humans, pose a significant threat to human health. In fact, respiratory particulate matter has been declared toxic by the
