Welcome
The Irish Quaternary Association (IQUA) is a voluntary organisation comprising academics, amateurs, governmental and industrial partners with an interest in Irish landscape change during the most recent period of Earth history (the Quaternary). Its members have a diverse range of interests including agriculture, archaeology, climatology, ecology, engineering, geography, geology and hydrology. IQUA aims to promote Quaternary studies in Ireland through its publications, and the organisation of field meetings and conferences. It represents a unique pool of expertise in climate and landscape change capable of providing critical information on past and present Earth surface processes. It is also an ideal forum for the exchange of information between scientists, managers and interest groups concerned with the many contemporary issues associated with future climate change.

Quaternary Studies
An Interdisciplinary Program
Contents
The Program
Rutgers' Graduate Certificate in Quaternary Studies is a multidisciplinary program allowing students to specialize in the study of the last few million years in earth's historythe Late Cenozoic and Quaternary geologic time periods. The program explores the interaction of the lithosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere of these years, during which fluctuations in climate triggered the development of continental-scale ice sheets, caused major changes in sea level, and initiated major migrations of animal and plant communities. These changes shaped our contemporary physical environment and stongly influenced evolution. This period saw the dawn of Homo sapiens and the simultaneous extinction of many other groups of organisms. Our knowledge of Late Cenozoic and Quaternary events helps researchers understand current environmental changes and may enable them to anticipate future changes affecting the earth and its inhabitants. The program offers students the opportunity to conduct interdisciplinary research in the fields of anthropology, geology, geography, biology, meteorology, and environmental science. Based on a broad, multidisclipinary approach, the program provides the necessary theoretical and practical background for students pursuing careers that may require specialized knowledge of the Late Cenozoic and Quaternary periods.

A Dictionary of Quaternary
Acronyms and Abbreviations
Introduction
This dictionary contains acronyms and abbreviations that are common in Quaternary studies. It includes acronyms for societies (e.g., CAP, GSA), projects (e.g., PAGES, PALE), Government Agencies (e.g., ARC, USGS), and identifiers for radiocarbon and AMS laboratories (e.g., ETH, BGS) and Museum collections (e.g., UCMP). It also includes some often-encountered abbreviations for geographic entities, such as Canadian Provinces (e.g., AB, BC), US states (e.g., MT, WY), and countries (e.g., PRC). I have also included the two- and three-letter codes that are used as postal codes or internet country codes. The Dictionary covers "terms in common use" in earth sciences, such as time divisions or climate-stratigraphic units (e.g., LIA, YD) and dating methods (e.g., AMS, TL). Acronyms used in the various sub-disciplines of Quaternary studies (e.g., VGP, PAR) are also explained. The dictionary has a North American bias, although it does include some terms from other areas of the world. Where ever possible, I have included hypertext links to sites providing additional information for many of the societies, organizations, and projects listed.

The study of subfossil beetles (Class Insecta, Order Coleoptera) is becoming an important tool in understanding past environmental change. Virtually any non-marine sediment that has identifiable organic remains will include remains of insects, and many of these will be beetles.
Remains that are frequently found and are readily identifiable include disarticulated [unattached] heads, pronota, and elytra. The first illustration at the right, of the ground beetle Schizogenius sulcifrons (family Carabidae) , shows these body parts. The sculptural elements that are the basis for much modern taxonomy are preserved and make the fragments frequently identifiable to the species level. Most beetles are quite specific as to habitat requirements, and those in non-island environments have undergone almost no evolutionary change in the Quaternary Period. We therefore can use their modern ecological requirements as a basis for interpreting what past environments must have been like.
For example, the second figure shows a modern specimen of the rove beetle

Graduate Course Descriptions
Description of Program
Students in the Graduate Program in Geological Sciences at Rutgers join a department that offers both challenging instruction and an unusually active research environment. The program grants both M.S. and Ph.D. degrees to full- and part-time students. Nearly all full-time graduate students are supported by research grants and teaching assistantships. Faculty grants and university funds provide students with necessary support for school-year and summer projects, as well as the opportunity to present original findings at regional and national conferences. Graduate student research projects take full advantage of the region's diverse geology. Precambrian crystalline rocks, the Appalachian Paleozoic fold and thrust belt, Triassic-Jurassic rift basins, the Mesozoic-Cenozoic coastal plain, and the shoreline of the Atlantic all offer excellent possibilities for exploration. Students in the program have also worked in the Canadian Maritimes, the Basin and Range of Idaho, the volcanic zone of Central America, the Hawaii Scientific Drilling Project, Antarctica, Iceland, the East African rift system, Atlantic offshore basins, the

"The Quaternary Studies Program provides a unique and exciting opportunity for you to combine interests in the geosciences, paleontology, paleobotany, and archaeology."
Kathryn Cruz-Uribe, Director Introduction
Our program involves interdisciplinary research into Earth's present environmental conditions and biota as compared with the Quaternary geologic record. In geologic time, the Quaternary Period is represented by the Pleistocene, the Ice Age, and the Holocene, or Recent, epochs. Dynamic changes in climate, vegetation, fauna, and geologic and pedagogic processes are registered in the geologic record of this period, which covers the last 1.6 million years. This period also witnessed the development of the human species and the arrival of early humans in the New World. In studying this period, our M.S. program allows you to obtain specialized interdisciplinary research and academic training. Our faculty have numerous research projects in Arizona and throughout the Colorado Plateau, and excellent opportunities exist for research in other regions of North America, including California and the Great Basin. One major goal of our program is to provide you with practical knowledge of the peer review process, which includes writing grant proposals, producing research manuscripts, and presenting results at scientific meetings.
