Threats to the arctic environment
The natural surroundings of the Arctic are very fragile, and even minor encroachments can cause lasting damage. The Arctic environment is coming under growing pressure from human activity. Tourists are heading deeper into the wilderness, and more and more people want to experience the untouched nature that can only be found in polar regions. Concentrations of environmentally hazardous PCBs in polar bears in Svalbard have been found to be up to six times higher than in polar bears in Canada. Because of the difficult climate and other natural conditions and the large areas involved, monitoring the environment in the Arctic is a major undertaking. Svalbard
Svalbard is part of the Kingdom of Norway, but the Treaty of Svalbard from 1925 also gives other countries extensive rights. Citizens from signatory countries to the Treaty have the same rights as Norwegian citizens to engage in industry, mining, fishing, hunting and other maritime and commercial activities. All visits to Svalbard are subject to strict regulations regarding the protection of nature and historical sites, as well as ensuring the safety of the visitors. The tour organizer must inform the Governor of Svalbard of all tour plans well ahead of the start of the season, as well as present proof of insurance to cover any search and rescue operations should the need arise. Individual travellers must notify the authorities of any planned trips.

In September 2002, board and staff of the Canadian Polar Commission met to develop collectively a Strategic Roadmap for the Commission's next three-year term. Drawn from the Canadian Polar Commission Act (February 1, 1991), the Roadmap consists of a Vision Purpose Values and Beliefs , and Objectives Vision CPC will advocate and develop polar knowledge to benefit Canadians and sustain polar regions. Polar knowledge includes social sciences, traditional knowledge, natural sciences and the humanities. Purpose
  • To monitor the state of knowledge, in Canada and elsewhere, in respect of the polar regions and report regularly and publicly. To determine polar knowledge priorities and report regularly to Canadians. To co-operate with Canadian organizations, institutions and associations to support the development and dissemination of knowledge in respect of the polar regions. To advise the Minister on any matter relating to the polar regions. To provide information about research in respect of the polar regions to Canadians and Canadian organizations, institutions and associations. To enhance Canada's international profile as a circumpolar nation by fostering international cooperation in the advancement of knowledge in respect of the polar regions.

This centenary is not only an opportunity to mark the outstanding contribution made to scientific exploration by Scots, both past and present, but also a chance to highlight the importance of geographical teaching and research in advancing our understanding of the world we live in. Funds raised in support of the Scotia Centenary are being used to develop an imaginative programme of exhibitions, musical performances, educational events and environmental research whose benefits will extend far beyond the bounds of Scotland. The centenary is also helping to raise funds which will be used to provide long-term support for geography education and research in Scotland. Amongst many celebratory activities, the

Ever Wanted to Experience the Ends of the Earth? Teachers Experiencing Antarctica and the Arctic Might Be Right for You!
    Overview of the TEA Program
The centerpiece of the Teachers Experiencing Antarctica and the Arctic (TEA) Program is a research experience in which a K-12 teacher parcticipates in a polar expedition. The TEA teacher works closely with scientists, parcticipates in cutting-edge research, and is immersed in the process of science. Enveloping this field experience is a diversity of professional development opportunities through which TEA teachers increase content knowledge, enhance teaching skills, transfer the experience to the classroom, assume leadership roles, and collaborate with a network of researchers and education colleagues. TEA is a partnership between teachers, researchers, students, the school district, and the community. TEA is sponsored by the Division of Elementary, Secondary, and Informal Education (ESIE) in the Directorate of Education and Human Resources (EHR) and the Office of Polar Programs (OPP) of the NSF and facilitated by Rice University, the Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL), and the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH). Since MAP (Middle Atmosphere Program) (l982-85), various instruments have been used to analyze atmospheric constituents, radiation, and the dynamics of the stratosphere and mesosphere. These include meteorological sounding rockets, laser radar, and an infrared spectrometer. A five-year program was conducted from l987 to l99l mainly at Syowa Station and in the surrounding sea ice as part of the Antarctic Climate Research (ACR) project. The purpose of this research was to study year-to-year variations of the Antarctic atmosphere and sea-ice-atmosphere interaction. The program consisted of satellite data acquisition (NOAA data from l980 and MOS-1 from l989), observations of clouds and precipitation, observations by several newly established automatic weather stations, and monitoring of minor atmospheric constituents such as CO , CH
